Quick and easy way to install a crown race on a mountain bike fork using a tool that costs less than $5.00 from your local hardware store.
First you need to purchase an 1 1/2" x 3' pre-cut PVC pipe which you can find at any Home Depot or home improvement store in the plumbing section along with 1 1/2" end cap.
What you need:
Pre-cut - 3 'x 1 1/2" Est: +/- $2.99
PVC End Cap - 1 1/2" Est: +/- $0.69
Rubber Mallet or Hammer
NOTE:
This video is just an EXAMPLE of the TOOL that is used to install a crown race. Yes, it’s not seated properly (obvious), but this is just a video that shows how you can install a crown race yourself for under $5 instead of buying a tool that retails for over $60. NOT how to properly install a crown race like a professional shop. ie: Cheap bike hacks

Works great. I recommend a little bit of synthetic lube on the tapered part of the steerer to make sure it goes on evenly.

@ 2:21, it's clearly not installed. grease is a must, & some of these can be quite tough to install, I think this is a great idea, not sure if the cap is needed - it's just one more thing to buy, but in general it nice to see things done well on the cheap.

I know this is a couple of years old, but it's still relevant. Man, this is ingeniously simple. I can only assume the reason even most bike shops don't do this more often is due to the brittleness of the PVC. Even though the tube I bought was very sturdy, I suspect constantly being hit on a daily basis would eventually break it up. Thank you for this tip! Came in super handy today.

Oh man sounds like you need to fire your mechanic! But sorry man, the only way to get that fixed is to replace it unfortunately. Even if you do straighten it out a little, dust, dirt and debris will get in there and not make it last and actually cause more damage in the long run. If it were me, I would just remove it and put on a new one! Hope this helps... Keep on shreddin’ 🤙🏻

Park Tool is waaaay over priced for what they sell. Used this PCV pipe method myself a few times. Although I usually add some lube to make things move along easier. A lot of my Automotive tools can be used for bike maint. as well. Hell I use a cheap steering wheel puller and a couple pieces of flat light steel(with holes drilled/tapped in the appropriate places) to press in new Headset cups.

Literally just did this tonight haha. Take a sturdy utility blade, wedge it between the crown race and the fork crown, and gently tap the back of the blade with a hammer a few times. Repeat around all 4 sides of the steerer tube and just keep going till the blade can slide completely under the race on all sides. Once the race is high enough, switch out the blade for a flat-head screwdriver and start gently tapping that under the race the same way. That will eventually drive the race high enough so you can just gently pry it up the last couple mm w/ the screwdriver. It might not seem like it's working at first, but the whole process only took about 10 min for me. Here's the video I watched to learn this if it helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LnBC5CEdgi8.html

If this was intended to be an instructional video on how to properly install a crown race you would be correct. I recommend shortening the pipe so you can actually see what you're doing when you're slamming the crown race down. You didn't see that all the way and you should have to demonstrate it how it's done correctly holding a fork in the air is correct but you need to be more professional when you trying to prove something is easy and cheap to do otherwise you can cause others to fail and ruin their Crown race or Forks next time do a complete job don't half-ass it. Lol
