I recommend this 2KW Air Diesel Heater from Amazon perfect for camper vans. with LCD, Thermostat Monitor, Remote Control, 10L Tank amzn.to/3UYuLEQ The all new maXpeedingroods diesel heater,s 5KW Diesel Heater with Bluetooth amzn.to/3W16tvq All in one Diesel Heater Bluetooth Control amzn.to/3HBtkth 12V AC DC Power Adapter for diesel heaters amzn.to/3j5y5RD
I bought the one with a separate tank. The exhaust and clips just don't make a good seal so I really wouldn't want an exhaust join inside the van. Also I bought 2 carbon monoxide alarms - one for where the heater is and one for the main part of the van. Does make it feel safer.
Respect most of your work Mel but this instal is not safe. Even with the Co alarm, the air intake must be outside the vehicle, occasionally these heaters can backfire, the air intake and the exhaust share the same internal space in the burn chamber, this could result In the heater pumping exhaust gases directly into the sleeping area, Even if the alarm does goes off the occupant could become very sick quickly. The heater in your own van is far more suitable for this application. ( you didn’t show exactly what you did with the air intake but mentioned it in the first half of the vid, so I assume it inside the van)
@@BigVanSmallWorld an unsafe install only needs to go wrong one time. You only have one life. Do not rely on a CO alarm to save your life. Install a safe system in the first instance, then fit an alarm.
@@SACREDTRAVELLER here is the link to two deaths due to badly fitted diesel night heater, I’m on the FB forums and learnt of this via the forum. www.gov.uk/maib-reports/safety-warning-about-carbon-monoxide-poisoning-after-the-loss-of-2-lives-on-the-motor-cruiser-diversion
The combustion air should come from outside. The circulating air intake is inside. Just the way it was designed to be installed. This also has to do with not creating a negative air pressure in the conditioned space, pulling in drafts and fumes Why cut corners when peoples lives are involved?
Mel, the air intake needs to be outside, any issues of incomplete combustion from the heater could result in harmful gases exiting INSIDE the van mate, you really need to sort this ASAP 👍
And it will use up all the oxygen in the van cause a negative pressure inside and pull fumes in from under the van thru the rear vents so yes it's very dangerous not to have an external air intake.
No. The whole point is efficiency by recycling the inside air. The burning sir and exhaust are outside. Vacuum lock inside a van...not possible...it's a van. Way too many installs done using recycling air....everybody panics and doesn't do research. Carbon monoxide detectors are used everywhere.
Thanks for emphasising the need for a carbon monoxide detector, and extra brownie points for NOT (wrongly) calling it a carbon dioxide detector like many US based RU-vidrs do 🤬🤬🤬. Both gasses can kill you, but CO only needs a few parts per million whilst CO2 needs to displace all of the oxygen present, so pretty unlikely in a van for CO2. Great vid as always 👍
And if you fit an awning later the fumes will stink the van out if the door iis open. I always fit the exhaust on drivers side. We get many wet and chilly days that need some heat but still like to cook outside on a campsite.
Take a look inside de machine and make a lose ( isolated system for the pump) in rubber OR other kind of installation So that the pump not resonate on the frame of the machine Then its less, less noise Greetings from ( 🇳🇱 👍)
Diesel engines don’t emit carbon monoxide ... They emit nitrogen ...oxygen ... water .... carbon dioxide .... But best to get a gas alarm for nervous people
@@BigVanSmallWorld There can be a miniscule bit of CO but it would only occur if the engine was running so bad it didn't burn the fuel but I believe these heaters are efficient and should only produce the 4 reactions mentioned. Great video matey
Air intake should be out side goes straight into combustion chamber. In case of fault. Internal fan blows over outside of combustion chamber only. To heat air in van. Love your videos tks.
Hi Mel so now now you have put the fear of tge lord up me with diesel heater fumes what can i do to get tge fit right please. You say its easy but ao bloomin scary and would you reccomend tge type in the vid or the other smaller type tgat i say you fit in your van. Thanks fella i hope you are on the mend
I’d say just take your time and think safety first I’d recommend the 2 kw heater not the 5 they just run way to hot I always end up opening my windows in my van I’m going to fit a smaller one come summer for next winter 👍
Thanks mel great advice as always. So i notice the fridge you use is on your Amazon front as well. Is 22 litres big enough? I could have 3 or 4 in the van so i was looking at the ebay 50 litre 12 and 24 volt fridge but no freezer. Your thoughts please. I know all you keep in yours is milk and frey bentos pies lol
This interesting ... everyone has an outside air intake ! your taking air from in the cab and pushing it outside, Something makes me think there should be a problem ! but all I can think of is it adds to the ventilation pushing that moist air out .. Could it affect the burn ?? Anyone care to add something !
With mine I have the windows open plus my ceiling fan is permanently vented so no problems with ventilation at all plus there’s no way I could sleep with it running 😊👍
I used fire cement around the connection where the exhaust pipe fits on to the exhaust stem coming out of the heater. (It minimizes the risk of exhaust seeping into the van) I also discarded the jubilee clips that come with these heaters in favor of heavier clips, (or better still industrial hose clamps) Good advice about not sleeping while the heater is running, unless the van is well ventilated.
I can't believe the manufacturers haven't sorted that clicking noise out they continue to make the heaters but do nothing about the noisy pump I'm sure it would be so easy to put the put rubber inside the pump so that the piston is hiting rubber rather than metal
@@BigVanSmallWorld I used to have the expensive one about £1000 but it still had the noisy pump I actually prefer the cheap ones they seem to chuck more heat out
Not only is the air intake wrong, the carbon monoxide detector is not ideal - "Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor. The detector may be placed on the ceiling. Do not place the detector right next to or over a fireplace or flame-producing appliance." from epa.gov.
I would go with the Fireangel combined smoke and CO detector with the lithium 10 year battery inside. That's what I bought. Also the garage that installed my diesel heater fitted a rubber bush which has got rid of that ticking from the dosing pump and my pump is mounted underneath the chassis.

What's your experience with the durability of Chinese diesel heaters. Is there a brand you recommend. I ask because I van life in Alaska and want to switch out my radiant propane heater because of the moisture and I don't like living with a propane tank in my home. Because of the weather I must have a reliable heater. Thanks for the video and hope you are doing fine.
Surely aluminium is a super conductor, wouldn't some heat resistant material be better? Don't you need external fresh air into the heater so it doesn't use your oxygen in the space, just thinking when I did boiler controls, the boiler rooms had to have fresh air fans into the boiler room
Your absolutely rite that’s why most vanlife people have the windows open at night to make sure they have good ventilation in my van I sleep with front windows open an inch with wind deflectors and my ceiling fan is permanently vented even when closed 👍
These things cost me £60 a week on constantly on the lowest setting 16oc 5kw since August .I have 3 there not cheep at all to run but keep you warm.ow & take the pump outside extend the fuel pipe & electric cable otherwise its clunk clunk clunk ever 24 hours.
the ticking drives me nuts ,I have tried everything the suspension bands different pipe so no noise transfer ,I have tried 3 different pumps just like a dripping tap ,, Im pulling mine out I hate it now ,, But then Mel I have reverse cycle air con so I can flick a switch and use it ,,,,, I have 2 of these heaters I think I will find a home less person in a van and fit it for them free ,,,, One I will keep for my shed ,, good vid tho buddy and its not really that cold here in oz only a week or 2 in the winter so I think I will be ok ,,,,,,,Now Where is my Aircon its 42c today ! TOO BLOODY HOT
I’ve contemplated using one of these heaters but having the heater outside the van and piping in the warm air much safer that way. Shouldn’t be too much hassle to lift it our stand it on the floor and connect the air pipe and electrical connection.
Way too risky for me personally but I do appreciate the video, it's just a shame about the exhaust setup, I wonder if a longer solid exhaust tube could be welded in to take the exhaust joint outside of the living are. Just a thought. Cheers, Chris.
Hiya they are really neat things but that exhaust is a bit of a worry . What do you think ? Would it be better in a gas style safety box maybe with a door to the van side or rear so refuelling is easier . But I do like it , great vid as always and good luck with your Amazon shop front , add everything to it I’m sure you will do well with it .
use a metal kitchen support post bracket as a heat sheald perfect for £2.00 use a silencer & block the edges up with paste as the electric weld manufacturers have done leaks.gathering under your vehicle. always use 2 detectors.
Hi Mel Nice video 👍. I got a similar all in one and for some reason, whilst I've primed it and ran a few cycles at its highest temperature then to a moderate temperature outside my van (pre instal). It doesn't seem to slow down into slow ticking mode. Like it hasn't reached its temperature. And still drawing 40-50 watts. Any idea? Thanks
Great video... have been looking for one like this. Is it working well for you? Also if you can provide the link where you bought it, would be great :)
Brilliant. I've got a VW crafter LWB and use one of these little diesel heaters. They are good. You can purchase flexible silicone hose to direct the heat to where you want. Thanks for the upload
You add a carbon monoxide alarm to a safe install to keep you safe. You don't rely on a CO alarm with an unsafe install. These all in one heaters are not to be used in a van, especially if sleeping in it.
Everyone’s saying the same thing, Mel.... I urge you to reconsider this install, potentially people without knowledge are literally going to copy you, 1000’s maybe, how would you feel being responsible for a subscribers death, I’m sorry if you think I’m trolling you but this one is very serious. You own vans diesel heater is fitted incorrectly, even against the instructions but this isn’t even your van, are you really going to take a chance that it might be ok
Thanks Mel...you have helped me a whole bunch my new friend...i hope all is well and i pray God may bless you and keep ya safe out there :) P.S. i will be sure to get a detector 🙂
That type of heater would also be great for heating up tents, all four tents if the ducting was long enough to go to each tent. The heater could be left outside with an umbrella/cover above it and a power Oak to power it up. It's Good heater with many uses that's for sure. 👍👍👍
All good, then the awful loud clicking noise, oh dear, I could'nt live with that, and there's not much possible to eliminate it. What a shame. Thanx for vid.
Nice one Mel. Been really on the fence with putting a heater in but the getting out of bed in the morning now its getting cold made me realise it's a must 🥶😂
The whole reason for fitting a heater is to use it while you are in bed. The coldest hour is the hour before dawn etc. I can reach my heater controls from my bed and the pump, air intake and exhaust are all underneath the van floor. The diesel comes from the van diesel tank and i have a Carbon Monoxide alarm. I am sure that is the safest way to fit it. I love all your videos Mel but you must rethink this one. Best wishes......
Whoa, thats a terrible install Mel, first of all, a used gas can, no no no no no no, secondly, these units are really not good enough for a install in a Van, as you said, the exhaust is visible inside the van, its a can of death on wheels, seriously, if you took that to get certified, mate your ass is grass, if you like that lady, pull it out now. sorry mate but its not safe as it is. ditch it now
I don't know if any one has posted this already. But you must locate the Co detection device in accordance with building control advice. It is absolutely no use placing it next to the unit . Brill video thpigh
unbeatable noise having the intake inside also incoraging fumes to be sucked in if the exorst is blowing towardsyour van. hang your pump underneath on a tie wrap or mount it cement for ultimate silance , il be dammed if im listening to clunking at night.
Hi mel just fitted one of these is there anyway of making the pump abit quieter and does it draw alot of power leaving on standby your definitely the man that knows
I haven’t taken it apart yet to see what’s inside but if I do I’ll make sure I make a video as for running they use very little once there up and running and when not I use it don’t even register on the metre 👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld thanks mel because of the layout in my van its at the sliding door so just made a cupboard around it b & q scrap wood £1,50 will cover it in black 4 way carpet as thats whats in my van so should look ok and possibly abit quieter when I pluck up the courage to be on a video will do a van tour thanks again
