This video shows how I installed my Mr. Cool Mini Split unit to get air conditioning and heat into my shop. The best part about this split unit is that its DIY friendly and anyone can install. My workshop, which is also my garage is 750 sqft, and this 24K split unit cools the space in no time and keeps the temperature at comfortable levels with ease. It is also a smart unit which means I can control everything from temperature, humidity and even schedules from my phone. Hope you guys enjoy this installation video, and if you have any questions for me feel free to put them in the comments section below.

I always thought the danger of stepping on the top of the ladder was perhaps losing ones balance...your video of the fall shows the ladder shifting. Amazed you did not break something! Incredible how fast gravity is! I'm grateful you were not hurt seriously.

I'm really appreciative of you leaving that part in the video. I've been working on a ton of home improvement projects this summer and have been spending a lot of time on a few different ladders. Complacency is definitely one of the best ways to take a trip to the hospital so it's crucial to be mindful and patient while working. No DIY project is worth sacrificing safety.

Really nice job. I just got a 2 zone version of MrCool and haven't started the install yet. I know one of the hardest things is going to be pulling that trigger on the drill to start cutting the first hole through my wall. It's great that you left in that ladder mishap for all of us to be reminded of how quickly we can go from doing great, to potential tragedy. I just lost my second oldest brother last Wednesday because of a similar decision on his part trying to retrieve a tail light from the street. He was hit by a vehicle and killed. God bless you all and take the extra second to think about what you are doing and taking the extra step (not on a ladder) to stay safe.

Finally got it up and running. The only delays we had was because we realized we needed some extra parts (I’ll list that below) ru-vid.comUgkxihMYiJNXcHdbH-7ihymsLz61l7jVyb5O . So we have a loft where our current hvac just couldn’t seem to keep cool during the summer. We have been using a window unit since we bought this house over 6 years ago (all the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 80’s and majority of the houses built like ours use a window unit). I hate window units because they are just so noisy and the one we had really only cools one side of the loft. I had contemplated upgrading our current HVAC, but with all the rising prices these days, it would take years before saving up enough to do that. With the advice of my father-in-law (used to run an HVAC business), he recommended we get an inverter instead. We thought we bought everything we needed, but there were just a few other parts we didn’t anticipate needing (which is what caused most of our delay). My friend and father-in-law did all the work to get it installed and running and now we have nice cool air circulating nicely throughout the entire loft. It is very quiet and even the outside unit is much quieter than our main HVAC unit. Saved ourselves thousands getting this.

The ones who gave it a thumbs down are probably hvac technicians, who probably know like I do that diy and hvac is not a good mix, unless it’s a window unit. In the real world, things go wrong, and when it does, the do it yourselfer who doesn’t understand how these machines work are going to be clueless on what to do and will have to do a lot of research or take the system out, ask for a warrantied replacement and start all over again. Already seen this happen a few times. It’s always a gamble. Better off to pay a little more and buy a good quality brand from a reputable hvac contractor and let them install it and they will stand behind it if something goes wrong.

Damn bro, glad you didn't get truly hurt. Anybody that is giving you flack for leaving that in the video is not a good human being. You are just showing us that all people are imperfect. You made a decision without actually thinking about the decision you were making it lead to negative consequences. Thankfully it's only that you got the wind knocked out of you, and we are so glad that you are safe and not hurt. Everyone forgets to think about what they're doing for just a second sometimes. Anybody who says they'd never done anything stupid and gotten hurt as a result, is lying. I think it's amazing that you were brave enough to share that with the world. Richard, whats your opinion on leaving the access line coiled behind the unit? I feel like everybody on the internet claims you couldn't bc of oil but MrCool themselves says to only uncoil what you're going to use and leave the access coiled. Kinda mixed messages. Lmk.
@richardwoeckener2622
@richardwoeckener2622 3 года назад
@@philkingmke The best way to coil the lineset is horizontally and not vertically. When you coil the lineset vertically it creates traps for the refrigerant oil (POE Oil) and over time it will keep the oil from returning to the compressor and hurt the compressor. Have I personally seen a compressor blow up because someone coiled it vertically? No. But this is information you’ll find in install manuals from other major mini split manufacturers such as Mitsubishi and Fujitsu and it’s been preached as “best practice” my entire HVAC life.
@philkingmke
@philkingmke 3 года назад
@@richardwoeckener2622 thats why I find it so interesting...bc if they're telling you to do that with their own units, they must stand behind that method. I'm about to do it since I don't need all 25' that comes with it so I guess we'll see. Lol.

Great video and very nice work. The only thing that I would recommend as an hvac technician to anyone doing this job is to get a vacuum pump and vacuum the system before opening the lines and allow refrigerant flow. It is highly recommended to remove moisture from system because that could potentially create problems in the future especially with compressor! Other than that great video 👍

I was working with an old timer (very experienced guy, jack of all trades) putting up siding and immediately after lecturing me on how to properly stand on & use a ladder, he leaned to far sideways on a 6ft step ladder, leaned up against the house, kicked out sideways and fell and broke both bones in his forearm. I myself had a very near miss on a 4ft cheap alum. step ladder (like the one in this video) leaned up against the vanity in my bathroom. While changing a light bulb it slid out and very nearly bashed my face on the countertop and/or mirror. Getting in a hurry and complacent/ overconfident WILL catch up with you. Those aluminum ladders suck! Glad to see you didnt get seriously hurt. Anyways, great video, great work, thanks for the insight. I cant wait til my DIY mini shows up! Thumbs up!

Now, so glad you didn't get more hurt. My first fear was you possibly stabbing yourself with that monster masonry bit. Best yet, can't believe you didn't cuss.

First time I watched a video of yours. I like how you show it all and comment it. Thanks a lot for sharing, because now I know for sure, that I won’t be able to install a split type AC myself. Sadly a certified aircon technician costs a fortune in Germany. Most likely almost 2x as the AC unit itself.
@KomarProject
@KomarProject 2 года назад
With this unit you can do it yourself and don’t need to hire a technician. But if your not comfortable doing it I totally understand. Hope you figure it out and get a unit in to stay cool my friend. Best of luck

15 footer here with T12 vertebrae compression fracture. Was changing the bulb in a motion light. Chipmunks tunneled under the brick patio I had my ladder on caused it to cave in and ladder tipped. I’m lucky I wasn’t paralyzed.

Better install video than the one from Mr. Cool! I’m about to install one myself and noticed you have a 90 degree turn on your lineset. I need to make 2 turns and wasn’t sure if that would be a problem. Any issues making that turn?
@KomarProject

Not really. Just be careful with it and make it a gentle 90. You defiantly don’t want to kink the lime. Good luck brother

If you watch the video you’ll know that vacuuming the lines is not needed with the pre-charged line sets from that manufacturer.
@pokerpig9069
@pokerpig9069 2 года назад
These are a new type of system - 'DIY'. They don't require an HVAC installer. These lines are vacuumed in the factory and charged and sealed before shipping. The connections have a release valve in them that prevents gasses from escaping until the connection is tightened. A desiccant canister removes any humidity that enters the system from when the connections are tightened.

Bart, Bart, Bart.... Sigh. When you're 20 you bounce when you fall, shake it off and go right back to whatever dumb thing you were doing. I can swear to you from personal experience that by the time you hit 60, you don't bounce anymore. Reason being all the times you bounced when you were younger. A word to the wise Pretty cool installing that mini-split by the way.

this is coming from a hvac professional, I have never seen a line set pre-charged with refrigerant. only the condenser is. I don't know how far from the wall you set the unit, but by code the unit must be no less than 12 inches from the exterior wall, and no less than three inches off the ground. for a package unit technically you have to pull three vacuums after hooking up the line set and pressure testing it with nitrogen, to remove all air and moisture from the line set and evaporator coil. that's what we call non condensables, the first vacuum is to 1,000 microns, the second to 500 microns, and the third is to pull it to 300 microns, and let it set for 24 hours to see if there are any changes due to micro leaks. then if it is good you release the refrigerant. the compressor in the condenser is a pump and can not pump water nor air. most of your newer compressors are cylindrical style and not a piston style. it will kill the compressor and most likely void any kind of manufacture warranty. other than that it was a pretty good install. and just fyi, a mini split, just incase you leak any 410A, is not charged by the standard pressure and super heat and sub cool. they are charged by weight only. so look at the info tag on the unit where the model and serial number is. it will have the factory charge either by ounce or pound depending on the manufacture. so you will need a refrigerant scale and a reclaim machine and a reclaim drum. weigh the Freon as you pull out the Freon into the reclaim drum weighing the amount that comes out. and you put in the difference to get it to the factory charge.
