Thank you for a good video on replacing a garbage disposal unit. One thing to note in this video. When wiring the cord to the disposal unit it does matter which disposal wire connects to which cord wire. On the cord wire "jacket" one side has a rib or a stripe. The corresponding wire is to be connected to the white wire in the disposal. This assures the neutral and hot wires are wired correctly internally to the motor. Although the unit will operate, either way, this has to do with internal electrical insulation for personal safety. Thanks again from a retired union electrician.

Hello, great easy to follow, informative garbage disposal replacement tutorial. At 9:45 in the video you say it doesn't matter which way you wire. The cord you are using has 2 black wires, one had ridges, the other is smooth. The wire with ridges is the "hot" and should be connected to the colored or striped wire in the disposal. The smooth is the "neutral" and is connected to the white wire. Incorrect wiring may cause an unsafe condition.

If you are not hooking up a dishwasher you do not need to remove the knockout plug.

Excellent video. Very easy to understand. My case was a replacement of an existing disposal. Thanks to gravity the old one came out quite quickly. Working on my back in 100 year old home, cramped quarters, I called in my neighbor for another set of hands to hold the drain with plumbers putty to not move. Got what we thought was all tightened up and connected. Ran the unit and some water. Rewarded my neighbor and sent him home. About an hour letter I ran some water and there is a pretty healthy leak right under the drain piece mentioned about. I did a double take and made sure the ring was closed as far as I could make it as well as the three screws. No luck. Called the Plumber. He will be here between noon and 5PM Monday the 15th. Again, great video. I will update as to what I did wrong. I look forward to your future videos. The Plumber just left. I mentioned this video after he tried several things to stop the flow. I told him I spread the ring. He pulled it apart to find that I was the cause of the leak. Too much spread so he compressed it. I swear I only spread it enough to open up and touch the other end. That's my story and I am sticking to it. Again Excellent video!!!!

Before you begin to remove old unit it is a good idea to FIRST PRESS THE RED CIRCUIT BREAKER on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Don't ask me how I know.

I have an 8 month old badger 5 XL garbage disposal. It started leaking from the top, so I started watching videos to figure out how to fix it. I bought a new flange kit and will I’m use my garbage disposal I currently have. All the videos that I watched showed me how to replace keeping the same flange, but never showed me how to remove the flange. I was very frustrated until I found your video. Your video was short, to the point and left nothing out. I learned how to not only remove the flange, but how to install it and use some tools that no one else showed me. I am 61 year old female with some hand injuries, so I don’t have a lot of strength. But your video I didn’t even need a lot of strength as nothing was difficult. I did what it said, and I’m going to finish the installation now. Thank you for providing such a good instructional video

Thank you Mr plumber I learned a lot from your video right now. I am learning how to do this for the first time because I'm on my own. I am doing all my own house maintenance. I am remodeling the bathroom, changing out the toilet, fixing the shower wall and installing a sink. I got a lot of projects going on. I'm also laying down wooden flooring in my dining room and some in my bedrooms. I am redoing the kitchen sink installing garbage disposal and putting in a dishwasher as I was removing the sink I came across a little bit of water damage where the sink was placed due to a leak. So I got a few projects going on and I am learning a lot by watching these RU-vid videos and reading home building books by the Home Depot and so on. I also like to talk to people who have experience in these fields it's very helpful.

I noticed your old disposal was the same model as mine, so used this as my Bible to replace mine. Worked great. Mine was wired directly rather than using an outlet, which made things a bit more complex, since I had to do the wiring under the sink. Thank whoever built yours that way! Also, let me tell you your old B5 looked showroom fresh compared to mine when I removed it. UCK! I really didn't need anything like the channel locks. The same "disposal wrench" you use to remove the old one works just fine the other way to attach the new one. It did take a bit of force to snap it in, but the only real issue was in knowing I needed to do that. Thanks! The advice to not put your eyes directly underneath when removing the old stuff was particularly valuable too. Thanks again!

Come to find out the guy who installed it didn’t make that horizontal pvc long enough so it was barely inside the tie in to the main drain so now I will buy a longer horizontal piece and redo! Thank you. I've never changed a garbage disposal until today. I'm fairly handy but your video probably saved me hours of aggravating trial and error. Quite honestly I only needed to watch up to the point where you showed how to disconnect the quick connect. Had the job done in less than an hour and most of that was getting things to line up.

This is a very good detailed install video. I watched this just because and never knew about that tab needing to touch to be properly tightened. Learned something there.

Very helpful video. The toughest part for me was lifting the new disposal with one hand, keeping it flush, while turning the bracket with my other hand. It took a few attempts to have all 3 guides catch the notches.

First time doing this, bought the Insinkerator Badger 900 at Home Depot, along with cord----and watch his video a couple times.....an hour and a half tops and it was switched out----had the tools, just needed a small can of plumber's putty. FYI---Home Depot install vendor wanted...wait for it---$469.00 to install!!!! This is a definite DIY!

This is an excellent video! I have used it twice now. One thing I found is that in a Corian or stone sink, less is more with the plumbers puddy. The thickness makes snugging that ring up a little difficult. Many thanks for your thoroughness.
