Steve - Help me please.... Here in NZ, a lot of our mowers are quad blades on a disc, rather than these long twin blades I see in your video. I have a bet going with someone..... If the disc is put back on upside down, but the blades still end up being correct with Grass Side Down, could that still cause these issues you mention of an upside down blade? Broken Flywheel, bent shaft etc? Theres a few beers riding on this so would love to know your answer.

Steve, I have to say, I sooooo appreciate your video on this! My husband was the one who always took care of the lawn mowing and maintenance on our Grasshopper rider mower. He is a brain cancer patient who no longer can communicate or think things through. Yesterday I changed the oil, oil filter and sharpened the blades (by watching RU-vid videos of course). But once I had the blades installed I questioned myself if I had them on correctly. Your video was so helpful. I felt you were right there coaching me along the way! I am going to use allll of your videos on small engine repairs/maintenance from now on! You give me the confidence that I can do it myself! Thank you and God bless you

Hello Steve, thanks for the video. A quick tip about the right handed nut and bolt. Take your right hand and make a fist then point your thumb at the nut or bolt and your curled fingers show which way to turn it to put it back on. Point thumb away from the nut or bolt and your curled fingers show which way to turn it to remove it. Has come in handy when working upside down and sideways. Have a great day!

A quick suggestion: if you are removing the blade to sharpen it (and presumably going to reinstall it on the mower), mark the "grass side" with a shot of spray paint. When you reinstall the blade, you will know to look for the spray paint mark. Can't muck that up.

These are great videos, Steve. Your explanations are clear, you go slowly, the camera work is good with close-ups, etc., and in addition, you often provide more than one way to accomplish something. Great video as always, easiest thing to remember is the mulching bent tip has to face upwards. Its surprising that a large proportion of owners never sharpen their blades and these lawnmowers are quite forgiving and keep cutting with the dullest blade. So even a blade put on backwards owners are likely not to realize it. For the rest of us keep the blade sharp, machine works less and you get a better job. Well done on the video, a refresher course for us old timers and a lesson for those sharpening blades for the first time.

These videos are fantastic , for the novice or seasoned do it yourself repairer , there is always something to learn . One thing I haven’t seen recommended is the use of antisieze on nuts & bolts , I made a pact to myself years ago that anytime I pull anything apart & I know it’s highly likely I’ll have to do it again , a smear of antisieze can save a whole lot of swearing & cursing at frozen or corroded bolts . These days I even do it to brand new fittings like blade bolts to ensure it doesn’t become a pain in the arse when it come time to replace .

Jesus Murphy Steve, I have struggled with these lawn mowers and small engines for years, and I wish I had found you sooner. I have now properly changed and sharpened mower blades on push mowers and tractors, helped myself and my family a great deal, figured out the flooding issues on my STIHL trimmers and chainsaw thanks to you, basic maintenance and upkeep, the list goes on. Thank you for being a great teacher, and not going too fast, keeping it simple and real, showing tips on wrenching and leverage, I am in Halifax and if I was on Vancouver Island I would be recommending you for any repairs and work. I will share your videos and hope you get more subscribers, and I hope you benefit from the great sharing of this knowledge instead of people being overcharged and taking a chance every time they need a simple fix. a LOT of charlatans out there..... Your advice on tipping a push mower over the right way changed everything bud Cheers bud, and I enjoyed many cans of Kokanee in the Shuswap, and throughout BC, and I am an East Coaster, but will ALWAYS love all of BC and miss it!

I’ve taken the opportunity to change the blade each time that my son has ran over the same raised stump in the yard that has shut down the mower, but also stopped the blade. This kills two bird with one stone. The motor is off and won’t restart as long as it is stuck on said stump, and the blade will not move while mower is on top of stump, which allows me to remove the blade and resharpen once again. 😂 I will say that the stump in question has finally been removed and it was never my sons fault. Lol. Thanks for the great tutorials over the years. 👍👍

I enjoy some of your older videos because they are so laid back and fun. Another trick for removing stubborn bolts is to spray a little WD-40 on it, drink a few beers, come back and tap it loose with a wrench and a hammer. If you drink too many beers you might forget all about it and it's even easier to remove the next day. ;)

Hey Steve, love the double wrench method, will definitely use in the future. I also use a breaker bar on mine, and soak the nut with Aero-Kroil. Also a great idea to use an Anti-Seize lubricant on the bolt when you're ready to reinstall the blade, and verify the torque spec on the nut with your owners manual. Makes it much easier to pull the nut off next time. Your channel is the Alexandria Library of small engine repair by the way, completely irreplaceable! And as a Bellingham resident, my garage fridge is full of Kokanee too - and Ranier!

Hi Steve, love your videos. It's nice to see a fellow Canadian eh! Worked at a small engine shop in Winnipeg. Just wanted to mention that you can also use an impact wrench (the easiest way), just be sure not to over tighten it when putting it back on. If someone doesn't have an impact wrench then a breaker bar can also be used to take the nut off. As a former small engine repairman I can tell you that you're dead on with your videos and have learned some new things too that I didn't know. Keep up the great work!

I was planning to sharpen the blade but first I watched your video on how to properly install a mower blade and yup, had it on backwards. It cuts much better now that the blade is on the right way! A neighbor asked me to do a small repair on her ride-on mower. As a courtesy I decided to check the blades and sharpen them if required. All three blades had been installed upside down. Shortly afterwards I did an inspection on a commercial out-front mower and this mower had the 2nd or middle blade installed upside down as well. I'm not even a small engine mechanic! Imagine the stories that people like Steve could tell? They could write a book!

I've watched this 'episode' more than once. Each time you give us those two ways to make sure the blade is the right side up, I say, Yeah, that's good. Recently I lent my mower to someone. She said it wasn't really cutting cleanly. I had thought the blade was sharp. Checked and found it was indeed sharp -- but it was upside down!! Either that or the wrong side had been sharpened. So this time, looking further afield into now to install the blades, I see some people use a torque wrench, but I've just used a battery impact wrench, with no problem. Having read up on the importance of not overtightening, I decided to use a torque wrench. No way could I wrench up to 70 ft. lb., just around 60 max. I'd have had to use a bar. I tried to turn the blades (I was working on a riding mower). Boy were they stiff!! I've never really tested them like this before, and wonder if this is normal or if something is wrong. Anyone know? Thanks!!

Thanks for this helpful video. I looked at the blade I recently purchased. Indeed, it has “grass side” stamped on one side of the blade. I had not noticed until I saw this video. Now I am more confident in changing the mower blade. I also learned from one of your other videos that prior to turning the mover on its side, the starter grip should be pulled to the point of greatest resistance to prevent oil from seeping behind the piston resulting in hydrolock.

Great tip about "sharp side" closest to the grass. Another good one was always tip the machine air filter up. I've serviced several mowers with no start issues only to find an air filter that was saturated with oil. Great video..Raisin a cold one to you sir.

For a lot of people this may seem mundane. For most people, it's a good refresher. And for those 1st timers or fewer than 10 timers, this is great. Great video. I got the information I needed. One quick note, OSHA does not approve of "double wrenching"..... as a professional mechanic for many years, I will admit that I have used double wrenching more than once.... (it does work), but a Breaker Bar with the correct size socket is a better option. Thanks again.

For years I didn't realize there was an upside and a grass side to a lawnmower blade. I thought they were reversible and I probably got it wrong more times than right. What may seem like basic info to professionals who work on this kind of repair every day, is invaluable to the do it your selfer who only does this every so often. Every time I take my blade/blades off (riding or push) I clean the bolt and apply a very light coat of grease to it. It makes getting that bolt out easy every time. If you got a used mower from someone often those bolts are really stuck. WD or another penetrating lubricant a day before trying to hard can really help. 👍

Cheers from the uk pal just brought a back up mower for my small business just started up 2 years ago and going strong and now i shall look at the blade and if its nackerd i will change but after 1 go of it it was cutting and spotting it everywhere so am sure its just blunt as hell but wouldnt suprise me if its upside down. You can also use a c-clamp or vice grips on the lip of mower deck so the blade will catch on that and you can turn the bolt without having to hold the blade. I used a vice grips and then used a socket wrench to get the bolt off mine. But I had to repeatedly tap the handle of the socket wrench with a hammer to get enough force to loosen the bolt.

You are great. My mower(zero turn) manual says to put some copper based antisieze on the bolt before reinstalling the blade and gives a torque spec. This has been helpful in maintaining my mowers three blades. I am going to watch your video about how to sharpen the blades. Thanks again for your great videos.

I am a DIY lady, and love to learn the correct way to do it. I have two mowers I am working on right now. My sons, and my daughters. They just happened to buy the same Troy Bilt's. Best explanation on the web . My son gave me a couple year old toro self propelled mower. I hated it from the start because it alway left a clump of grass on every pass I cut. Put a new blade on the same way I took off the old one. Didn’t solve the problem. Watched your video checked the blade an sure enough it was upside down. Flipped the blade over and it cuts perfect now. Thanks a lot for the info. Btw I checked the blade and damn if it didn’t say grass side on it. You da man ,

First time saw this, and it was great, first time ever changed blades cost me $15 Amazon, the Guy I take my mower to, to charges $50 + parts... .. It took me10 min $15 I will DIY always thanks Steve.

Steve, also very important for the blade being on correctly....the fin or turned up part of the blade must be up to pull the grass up through the wind action by the fin. The grass must be pulled up by the wind for the blade to cut the grass. If the grass is lying down, the blade won’t cut. There’s actually aerodynamics in grass cutting. The fin on the blade and the enclosed cowling of the lawnmower all play a part in a “vacuum” pulling up the grass blades for the lawnmower blade to cut the grass.

Great vid and knowledge! Knowing the grass side of the blade is crucial. That smart wrench trick gives you more torque. Shot some Liquid Wrench on that stubborn bolt and a few minutes later, it gave itself up.

Haha, up in Minnesota when I was a kid my uncle put the blades on the push mower backwards. The thing was literally bouncing off the ground. Though he didn't invent it a few years later they came out with the flymow.

Thank you for the tip. This is very helpful. I had to buy a longer ratchet to get some leverage in order to remove my blade. And a long handle torque wrench to torque it properly. I also bought a blade removal tool which holds the blade in place when you remove or or tighten the blade. The same company that makes the blade removal tool makes a blade sharpener and a balancing tool. All of those combined made the whole process very simple.

6:00 Pro tip: if the bolt is hard to turn, setting the end of the wrench close to the blade so that you can crab both with a single hand is a good way to get more force to the wrench. Humans have suprisingly good gripping force and you can apply really high force this way - the end of the wrench must be so that when you close your fist, the end of the wrench must move to the position where it loosens the bolt.
