Eric is the youtuber that got me into using Lutron Caseta for all my switches. This video saved me today when I had to finally tackle the 4 way switch that I've been avoiding. Thanks!

Hey Eric , I just want to say. Thank you so much for posting this video on how to wire up the Lutron Casita dimmer switch in a four-way set up. I tried wearing this switch up myself and it didn’t work and after watching your video I made it work just perfectly. Thank you so so much keep posting the great videos.

I just installed a Lutron Caseta Wireless Dimmer in a 4 way circuit a few days ago. This video was EXTREMELY helpful! I tried installing the way the company's video instructed, but I kept getting the lights stuck in the on or off position. Installing them the way you indicated in the video helped me get the new light switch and pico remotes working! My 4 way (middle) switch was different than yours though. I had to wire nut the left two together and the right two together. I also had to change which traveler would be capped off. But the basic concepts are right here in the video...especially labeling the wires. That is great advice!

We started our house with the TP-Link switches because of the cost. However, despite the fact our house was built in 1999 many boxes do not include a neutral wire. We have turned to the Lutron Caseta exclusively (despite the cost) for the remainder of the house. We really like the Pico remote because it has allowed us to get creative with our switch locations.

Great video! I'm going to be doing this shortly. So far I am very pleased with these switches and I also have automated blinds that operate in same way as the dimmers. Even if you do have a neutral wire, it is easier to not have to connect it into the dimmer switch and I appreciate that about them. Their system is robust and has never failed to work for me.

Eric, great video. This was exactly what I needed to remove a 4-way switch and install the Lutron Caseta three way switch. I also installed two Pico remotes in a more logical location than what was originally wired. Believe it or not, there is very little info out there on replacing a 4-way switch with Caseta. Thanks again!

Have you ever installed a Caseta switch wired in a 3-way or 4-way setup with the original mechanical rocker switches?

Nice video. And congrats on the baby boy! I'm loving my Lutron switches so far. I've added a few more in my house since my last video on them. They are arguably the most reliable HomeKit devices in the house. They just always work and they are fast, which is great. I've been thinking about getting some of their new ceiling fan switches next.

I agree Shane...it’s a great system and easy to build out gradually. Every time I go to HomeDepot they can’t find the new fan switches it says they have in stock, and my one I preordered on Amazon still says not available yet. I can’t wait to try them too but looks like I’ll have to wait.

Thanks for providing way to combine 4 way smart dimmer . My electrician is a moron. Now I can put a smart dimmer 4way.

Since a 4-way setup includes 3-way switches at either end, is there any reason I can't just install the non-dimmable 3-way lutron caseta switch (PD-6ANS/PD-5ANS) at one of the 3-way switch end locations and leave the other two old toggle switches (the 4-way in the middle and the 3-way at the other end) the same? I don't really mind if if the other switches remain the old toggle switches so long as the entire light becomes smart at one end. Is there any reason why I couldn't do this?

So what did you find out? I have a 3-way switch in the hallway in this old house with no neutral wires so bought the dimmable version and don’t want to replace the second location with a Pico remote since I don’t use that location often and it’s a hassle. It still completes the circuit since its wired up so it should seem to work, right?

In the previous 3 way video he joined all three wires together. In this one he abandoned one of the traveler wires in the 3 way and capped it off.

I have recessed lights in our Kitchen, I would like to be able to make them dimmable. I haven’t yet purchased the Lutron light switch, there is two light switches that control the recessed light switch they are in two different locations in our Kitchen area. Our house is a newer house model so our light switch isn’t one of those old flip switch it’s one of those newer light switch that toggle up and down. Our Kitchen Ceiling Recessed lights are not a regular light bulb, it’s one of those big lights. I would like to try to stay with those big lights if possible if they come in a dimmable form?

Hi Eric, could you please direct me to a video for installing the Lutron Maestro in a 4-way circuit? Would it be the same steps as the Caseta Wireless?

Awesome this is what I needed. I have 4 switches controlling two lights in a hallway/stairway area. So a 5 way switch setup? Idk. Anyway. Glad to know I can pair more than a couple Picos to one dimmer.

I used Lutron in our last house and LOVED them but the lights we used them with were also new. Just no neutral wire. In our current house the wiring is also lacking the neutral wire but we also have older lights here. We moved to an area with no streetlights so my focus is smart switches for the outside lights as a matter of safety. And smart bulbs didn't make sense. So I guess I'll see if they make dimmable outdoor flood lights? What's the risk using. On dimmable? We plan to only use them as "on/off" switches.

Eric, I see in your video you abandoned both of the 3-way switches, would this setup still work if I only wanted to abandon one of the 3-way switches? So I want to keep one of the 3-way switches and replace the current 4-way with the Lutron.

What Lutron Caseta Dimmer Switch did you use? I have the same set up in my Kitchen. However I have an older house, with not ground wirers.

It's a great video however aren't you basically creating a single pole switch/circuit? It's not really three way controllable outside of the remotes. There must be a way to keep the functionality of all three switches.

Hi Eric. I have a 4 way circuit that I want to do the same as you did. You noted that we should watch your watch your previous video on 3 way switch replacement to see what you did with one of the 3 way switches and in that video you merged all three wires together for one end of the three way. In this video you abandoned one traveler and capped it off. Did I put that together correctly? If that is correct I will do that and replace both 3 ways with Pico remotes and then install the dimmer in the 4 way box. Thanks for the help and keep up the great work! You are officially my go-to content provider for all things Homekit.

Sounds correct to me. Check out the diagram in my 4 Way switch video if you need a reference for that. Essentially you’re turning a 4 way into a single pole and replacing the 3 way ends with pico remotes.

Great video. I recently purchased a house that has mostly the Lutron Caseta switches thus I'm in the learning phase and now have some thoughts as to how I can use the pico switch to enhance the lighting in the house and provide better control. Thanks!!!

Thanks Eric for another solid video. Also. Congratulations on the new addition to the family...little babies are the coolest. I’ve converted all of the switches on my main & 2nd floor to a combination of Lutron Canseta ‘smart’ units and/or replaced the old ‘standard’ switches to the flat, Dacor-style so that I have HomeKit functionality AND everything looks aesthetically pleasing. The only lighting circuit that I have yet to convert to ‘smart’ is a 4-way lighting circuit that illuminates my second floor hallway/landing. I’m not satisfied with the need to use Pico Remotes as replacements for the 2nd & 3rd switches. Perhaps I’m just being stubborn (not perhaps, I most certainly am), but I want to maintain simple, ‘hard’ switches in locations 2 & 3. Apparently there is no way to do this using Caseta products. Although, in Lutron’s defense, no other company offers a solution either... I’ve called Lutron’s tech support and was told it won’t work...and was also told that it MAY be something that they just haven’t tested/verified. Who knows? I realize it’s a pretty specific scenario I’m looking to achieve...so I certainly don’t expect it to be solved for in the near future. Just my $0.02 & experience. Keep the HomeKit videos coming.

Thanks Bradley! Yeah 4 way down to 2 smart switches gets complicated. For me the four way I replaced was kind of over-the-top and I didn’t want the extra switch locations.

Leviton Decora look great but are awful. I have had two electricians come to the house in the past two weeks and can not get a 3 Way setup working per the printed manual or per their Leviton video. I have over 40 smart switches via Insteon in my house and was starting to replace with Leviton. That has now been haunted with this issue and same issue found from many others who left comments on the video link. Still no solution from their tech support.

Oh man! What a rough time. It might be worth giving Lutron a shot with their standard switches. Thanks for sharing!

Depending on how old, and where your house is, it may be an issue with how the 3-way was wired... there's an old (and terribly difficult to troubleshoot) method known as the 'Carter Method' for 3-way switches.

This video isnt entirely accurate. In my installation my 4-way switch had 2 black wires at the top and 2 red wires at the bottom. The top of the switch was labeled "input" and the bottom was labeled output. The input wires were black and the output wires were red. Connecting each side of the switch together, red to black, was the correct wiring. I suppose it depends on the type of switch you have. As for figuring out which wires to tie together on the 3 way switch, i had to do a little trial and error to get it to work.

Great video! I do have one question though. Looking at 4 way wiring diagrams, couldn't you just merge the load and both travelers in the first 3 way switch you did in this video? Your 4 way switch has two travelers in and two travelers out. Both of those travelers out go to the final three way switch. Your Lutron Caseta in place of the 4 way effectively turns the 4 way switch into a single pole. Unless I am missing something, you should be able to just merge all of the blacks and reds together in each of the three ways. I am just trying to figure out why you separated out one of the travelers, but obviously it would still work the way you did it.

Sorry this is not a how to on how to make a proper 4 way smart switch this is yet another video on how to disable a 4 way (3-way) circuit and add a bunch of remotes. Also you are totally wrong about just use if a typical lutron switch as a 3 way. I’ve tried every way to wire them there is no way to get a proper 4 way switch wired up and working with a caseta 3 way kit. If it were just the 3 way switches then yeah just add the jumper on one end but in a 4 way setup your jumper would also have to flip every time so that’s not an option.
