She correctly emphasized that the screen side of the queen cage had to facing out so that the bees could easily access / feed the queen, but then she pressed the adjacent frame up against the screen.

No, she didn’t. The cage was horizontal with the screens facing up and down.

What if you don’t have drawn our frames

Hi Brandon! You can install a package of bees on frames with foundation that is not yet drawn out. In this situation, we highly recommend feeding them a 1:1 sugar syrup feed to give them the energy they need to produce enough wax to draw out comb on those frames. Package bees are comb-making powerhouses, so they will build quickly and be ready to rock fairly quickly. With this type of pail feeder, the bees will take the syrup down all at once, store it away, and eventually plug up the brood nest. New beekeepers beware. 🐝
