Will Kelly of the Hard Knocks Guitar Shop, shows how to upgrade a standard Stratocaster with a pre-wired pick guard assembly from MOJO Musical Supply. It's a simple way to really make a budget guitar a performer! This shows how easy it is to re wire the guitar, as the Assembly just drops right in to the body. You can do it yourself, and make a big difference in your instrument. Guitar technicians everywhere know this little trick to quickly make a Fender Stratocaster sound like a million bucks.

That's a Peavey Reactor that I was f'ing around with, and actually installed SIX pickups in it. There are five single coils, and then there's a piezo pickup actually mounted to the tremelo block, to provide a additional tone. With the two five-way switches, there's more than 26 pickup combinations available... I did this just for a lark, to see if it could be done.... that's a perk when you own your own Guitar Shop !

Greetings Will, Just checked out your "How to install a pre-wired pickguard assembly" video. I found it very informative & helpful. Thanks again cause I`m getting ready to do this to one of my guitars this weekend. After watching you, I feel confident in not srewing anything up. What sometimes looks easy, can be a pain in the butt when you have grandkids around. I usually have to wait till they get picked up to attempt anything like this.( If you know what I mean.) It's not a dumb question. Active pickup assemblies still have to be grounded to the strings. So be on the lookout for a black, single strand wire that seems to come from the bottom of the pickup cavity. It actually is soldered to the tremolo spring claw, and fed through a small hole in the trem cavity on the rear, in to the pickup cavity on the front. If you don't see a ground wire hanging around, then something's wrong!

Why doesn't it fit? Are you trying to install a 21 fret pickguard on a 22 fret neck guitar? Is the neck cutout too small for the neck butt? I'd need more info in order to help you out ... thanks for writing though ... Will

typically, black is ground. You can twist and tape off the connection, or solder it. I suggest you learn and try to solder it. It's a great skill that will serve you well down the road...

Yes, but you may have to trim the guard a little bit around the bridge cutout, if the mounting screws are different. Go slow, cut conservatively and it should be fine

If I just want to swap loaded pickguards, all I would need to do is remove and resolder the ground wire to the trem and the output jack wires, correct?

Hey, i kind of had no idea what i was doing when i wanted to replace my pickups soo.....i know this was dumb, but i threww out everything. i have the same prewired pickup set, but i do not have the ground wire that comes from the tremolo claw, or the two output cables. What do I do? please respond back soon, Thanks

So I'm installing a prewired pick guard into my a blank body for the first time. and there was no split black wire for the out put jack. just a black wire, a white wire and a red wire. all loose. I'm pretty sure the black one still goes to the out put jack. but I have no idea about the red or white? any help you can offer would be radical.

@MrUssylover single coil pickups picking up 60 cycle hum. when its flat on your bed its not picking up the amp's tone so it doesnt hum, but on your leg the pickups are facing the speaker, picking up the amp itself. second and fourth positions are 2 pickups together in a hum cancelling manor, wirin crap basically. nothing is wrong, just ignore the hum or turn your gain down a little

Hi! I have a pre wired humbucker pickguard for a strat. In my old single coil loaded pickguard there's only two wires but in the humbucker loaded pickguard, there's three. Two is black and one is white. How do I know which cable to be soldered were? All three is soldered to the volume knob. Hoping for answer.

Sure, all you have to do is go to an online guitar parts store like GuitarFetish and order the appropriate color Strat pickguard with two humbuckers. The one thing I'd warn you about, is the need to change out the five way pickup selector switch for a three-way Tele-style switch, since the two humbuckers are going to offer only three pickup combinations.

You can purchase any pickup arrangement, and have them pre-wired by Mojo with your choice of custom components, such as pots, capacitors and switches. Simply contact them, and talk to a specialist about your needs, and they'll give you a quote. As far as pickups go, take a look at the "Lee Dickson" strat pickups. They're spectacular!

Will a standard pickguard fit every guitar? I have a smaller strat (old Johnson strat, they haven't made them for around 5 years!) and I don't know what the size of the pickguard is.

There are three wires coming from the output jack, and one wire coming from the bridge ground. Star ground together all the grounds, hook the output from the main pot to the output hot lead, the battery lead coming from the output jack to the battery 's positive terminal, and you should be good to go!

Okay, so I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but I took the stock pickguard and pickups out of my Strat and am trying to replace it with a prewired Lace Sensor pickguard. I'm not sure how exactly I'm supposed to solder it on because there are no free wires. Maybe I'm just dumb, but there's no harm in asking, right?

Doing some looking online about this -- is the solder 60% tin and 40% lead, or the other way around, or does it matter?

There are only two types of Solder core ... rosin or acid. Use Rosin core solder with lead alloy if you can find it. Avoid the lead free solder .... it's a pain in the ass to work and rework.

+Hunter Morris Yeah, resolder it ... but, if you don't have a soldering gun, you can always wrap your bare wire around a ground point that has a screw attachment point, such as the mounting screws for a switch body...

why did you swap pickguards? couldn't you have just dropped the whole assembly in instead of going through he hassle of swapping pickguards ?

Chas Matkins Goes to a ground on the back of a potentiometer or other available spot with a ground. He grounded it on the 5 way switch, with the ground tab there (a little lug that sticks out, and attached to the metal switch). It is always good practice to go with star point grounding, ie, have all grounds go to one point, in order to avoid ground loops, and other nasty noise.

Typical "pre-wired" guitar assemblies usually do NOT include a pickguard. The purpose of Pre-wired assemblies is to provide fully wired pickups and controls usually attached to a simple cardboard or wood ply template, so that novices can upgrade their instruments' electronics without having to know how to solder or wire/assemble components.

QUESTION: If I want to replace the current pickguard with a loaded one, Im not replacing the output jack, why do I need to solder as apposed to just connecting the hot wire and ground wires together with wire nuts?

Yes you can do that, but be aware that wire nuts are not the best solution. They'll work, but nothing replaces a properly soldered connection that's insulated....

no, as long as the connections are solid ... just that they could loosen over time w/use and end up shorting out. Plus, they're bulky and in the output jack cavity there's not much space after the jack plug's been inserted, so you'll have to contend with that while positioning the nuts

Ok, I am sure someone thought of this but I don't want to read every comment. Why the hell would you buy a prewired pick guard. Only to keep the old pick guard? I thought the idea was to save time and install the whole prewired guard

I can only guess that he wanted to keep the original pickguard because the assembled one was off-white...In that case I would have just soldered in new pickups. Why spend money on pre wiring and another pickguard?
