Now that we've made tutorials on ridge vents, inflow vents, dormers and O'hagins, let me know which one you install the most and why!

I'm a building contractor with over 30 years experience and have shingled hundreds of houses. I ran into something I've never encountered before: a roof that was reshingled about 15 years ago was leaking at about 5 spots at the ridge and it had this type of ridge vent. The roofer neglected to install the Mastic underneath. So what was happening was, rain and dew ran off the caps, made contact with the bottom edge of the ridge vent, and worked its way back under the ridge vent (similar to how a curved gutter helmet pulls rainwater into a gutter.) Once the water made contact with that mesh air filter, it acted as a sponge and through capillary action it pulled the water into the house. When I tore the ridge vent off, that mesh filter was sopping wet. Takeaway lesson: when using this brand of ridge vent, don't skip the step of installing Mastic! $20 worth of Mastic would have prevented a $2500 call-back. As an aside: I always hand nail caps. Too many roofers use the gun, it crushes the cap shingles and restricts air flow.

Love your videos! One correction at 1:02 though. Owens Corning ridge vent is only for pitches up to 20 : 12. You could probably make it work for steeper but the packaging specifies 20 : 12 is the limit.

Thank you, glad you found it helpful. Generally ridge shouldn’t be stepped on too much. But if you do it’ll be fine, I think the ridge is the problem when stored on not the ridge vent

I'm very curious about something having to do with ridge vent over box. My experience is that venting should be 50/50 or 40/60 intake and exhaust in sq inch/foot. Yet I see many roofing jobs running ridge vent the full length of the ridge which would greatly exceed the intake area. Can you clear that up for me? Thanks.
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist 9 месяцев назад
You are 100%correct and more knowledgeable than 80% of roofers. Venting needs to be well thought out and balanced to be effective.
@locacoyote
@locacoyote 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for making that clear. I'm using GAF and there are easy instructions right on the box so I had to wonder why run the whole ridge. Best of luck to you for being one of the only RU-vid roofers that posts a video and stays with it.

So I just had my house reroofed and I noticed they didn’t put the ridge vent back up over my dormers they should’ve probably been replaced right?
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist 8 месяцев назад
Not necessarily, venting is a complicated topic as far as placement and quantity. You have to make sure you have a balanced system inflow versus outflow.

Just discovered on a friend mom's roof that the ridge was installed over a second layer of roof. But both roofs are sealed so no air is leaving this roof. Sided over the original side dormer vents. One vent on roof. Disaster

Is it normal to get moisture/condensation inside on the ridge vent?

No, I have never seen that happen. I have seen leaks happen from improperly installed ridge vents all the time. But not condensation.

I have that Owens Corning ridge vent on my house, and it SUCKS! Hardly any hot air moves through it. Now my new shingles are losing TONS of granules just 3 years out thanks to the convection oven I have in my attic that’s baking the shingles from the inside. Wish I had my roofers do turtle vents instead.
@RoofRepairSpecialist
@RoofRepairSpecialist Год назад
Do you have appropriate intake vents? at your eaves soffits. If not the ridge vents are completely useless. Venting is a system, if you only have one component of it it is pointless.

Do not waste your time on this vent. It is a subpar vent. Install only vents that have a wind baffle on both sides.

100% agree. I got the Ownens Corning corrugated garbage rolls on my roof 5 years ago, and my attic has never been hotter. No air movement. So, now I’m having to get bids to redo the ridge vents with a better quality product with baffles and a higher profile so air can actually move. I’m guessing Owens Corning is selling this crap because they know it will shorten the life of their shingles, and therefor create more sales due to roofs having to be redone more often.

That corrugated ridge vent is GARBAGE! If anyone has that crap on their hole, they’re NOT going to have effective air movement. I had that installed on our roof 5 years ago, and am currently getting bids to redo the entire ridge vent system with a system that has baffles and screens and has a high rate of air movement. If your roofer suggests this corrugated garbage, find a new roofer.

@Jeffs60

It's complete garbage so you need to repair every 5 years and mice will chew through that cheap stuff and you will spend even more money when they wreck your attic. My house is 1958 ranch, all it has was 2 gable vents and small box vent, no ridge vent, no attic fan, no soffits and there was never a problem, no mold or anything that is the way it was designed and that is the way it will stay when I get a new roof. Current roof is 23 years old so maybe in 5 years I get a new one.
@RoofRepairSpecialist

Every house is different and every area is different. Some places have mice and rats that chew through flashings. Some places have squirrels that cause problems. Bottom line you need to know what works and doesn’t work in your area.
