Much more straightforward and sensible compared to most of the, 'make it complex', sail hanging videos. Thanks for being a good teacher.

Was not aware of the concrete that sets up that way. Makes planting those 4x4’s so much easier. Good vlog.

Brian beat me to it, just make sure you get the right stuff. I've now set a half dozen or so posts with it, works well and is a lot less mess!

Hope yours lasts more than mine did. I setup a shade sail with the same size eye bolts and they got destroyed during a moderate storm. I'm planning on redoing it with larger eye bolts.

I’m on my 4th season with my one over the pool without problems. I’ve found the trick is to mount them level so they don’t catch the wind. I also take them down in the winter.

Turnbuckles, load-rated connecting links, and stainless steel braided cable are traditionally used in installing a sail shade, because shade sails have to handle way more force than you think - up to 400 lbs per corner in perfectly calm weather. There are plenty of load calculators online for shade sails if you want to check yours specifically. If you don't want unsightly sag in your sail shade and/or it to rip out during 20+ mph winds, don't use paracord. All of the hardware shown in this video is not recommended; check a professional sail shade manufacturer or installation company for tips in order to have yours last for the lifetime of the sail shade rather than until you get unlucky. Specifically: 1) Anchor eyelets should go completely through your wood (6x6 min size, rather than 4x4) or metal posts (4″ schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe). Threads are not as strong as a nut and washer on the back side 2) Without a ratchet strap, there's no way to get enough pull on that paracord to adequately tension your sail shade - notice how the author has sag in his sail shade over his pool and plenty of ripples and creases after install over the pond. This is why turnbuckles are recommended. 3) Rather than sailing cleats, utilize connecting links (aka heavy-duty carabiners) for quick install and uninstall, especially for winter storage. 4) All hardware should be stainless steel marine grade so as not to rust or degrade over time. 5) Sail shades should always be mounted at an angle. For a 4 corner shade, it is typically to have two high points (opposite) and two low points (opposite). If your install doesn't allow that, have at least a 4:1 horizontal:vertical angle to your sail shade. Paracord was designed for lightweight suspension lines in parachutes; the very common type 3 paracord is only rated for a static 550 lbs load. In high weather, each corner could see significantly more than that, and it's definitely not a static load when the wind is whipping your sail around. Mounting your shade sail level will do nothing to avoid the effects of wind, and will make it more difficult to tension. Wind doesn't move horizontally lol. Follow industry accepted tips and your sail shade will last for 5-10 years. Do it quick and easy and redo it in 12-24 months. Your choice.

Are the sails true to size? If I purchase a 10x10 sail should my post be 10 ft wide? Thanks

I like the video, this is similar to what I want to do. I just wish you had shown how you attached the white wood to the house for the other end of the sun shade.

That’s part of my patio cover.... built that before I had the channel unfortunately.

Good video. One tip: this sun shade looks like all corners are the same height. This will cause leaves and debris to collect in the middle. Instead, make one set of diagonal corners higher than the other set. That will make the sail into a parabola shape and nothing will collect on the shade. \

Thank you. I am trying to put something over a 14 x 14 floating deck. It sits in the middle of my yard and the patio umbrella does not cover enough. Please tell me how to put up a shade sail around a deck with nothing to attach it too.
@Janet8925
@Janet8925 4 года назад
I don't think that is possible! Theres no way if you don't have anything to attach it to! Simple answer to that. They don't hang in the air!

If your shade is 10 by 10 do you put hooks on boards at 10 feet apart or how do you do it
@DoItYourselfDad
@DoItYourselfDad 4 года назад
If your doing a 10x10 square you want the ropes to come off each end at a 45 degree (ish) angle. So I’d put the hooks at 12ft apart. That allows you some distance to pull the sail tight in all directions.
