So thankful for people like you that make these videos. This was helpful to me. I need a solar fence inside my chain link fence to keep wildlife out. Coons and coyotes aren't satisfied with my 5 acre field I gave them in addition to the miles of countryside surrounding my place and claimed my fenced backyard too. (where my garden is)

Just a tip. Try not to use house wire. It’s only meant for 110-220v. Only use it for the ground. Don’t use it to link charger to fence as it’s al least 2000 volts. It will short out on the fence posts a lot easier then the fence wire and ropes

As a kid we lived next to a pasture with an electric fence, and I always enjoyed getting sticks and and watching them sizzle on the wire. There's no need to shock yourself to see if it is hot. LOL

Blake, You will need to trim the tree limbs that are close to the top wire to prevent grounding out the circuit, hope Maggie respects the hot wire, my horse would push right through it. Good Job.

Great instructional vid for the Solar Charged fence for Maggie! Hmm, maybe do you think you need to hang some sort of warning/alert to let folks know the wires are hot? Another check off your list! Everything is looking good DK. Hope Lukes doing better and your family is well. Thinking about you today with the Texas storms passing thru. Hope you are all safe and good. I have been using Solar chargers for almost 10 years now. One of the secrets is to make sure you have a GREAT ground. I normally use 3 ground rods, spaced out about 10 feet apart.
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 7 лет назад
I was reading about using multiple ground rods. Do you think that this 250 linear ft (one strand) needs more than one rod?
@MrRljohnson77
@MrRljohnson77 7 лет назад
Blake Kirby the "dryer" the ground, the more need for a good ground.
@diannaboykin7628

if you water that area, put the water near the grounding rod, that way you can water the rod periodically

So, mine always just had one rod, I tried 3 and can't get it to work, so now I'm going back to one...we have soil that's a little heavy with clay.

There is a much easier way of driving the ground copper pole with just water. An old electrician showed me how to drive a ground pole by pouring water into the hole as you tapped the ground pole up and down. It goes in with so little effort compared to what you did with a pole driver. When I needed to move the electric fence, I wrapped a chain to the ground pole and used the bucket on my tractor and lifted it straight up and out of the ground.
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs Год назад
That's a good trick. I'll give that a try next time I need to drive a ground rod in. Thanks.

May I make a suggestion, at 2:51 you show a corner, the problem I for see, is that if an animal bumps it, or even if the wind moves things a bit, it may be able to ground out on the post... an honest quick fix might be, release the fence at the gate to loosen the pull at the corner, and either slightly bending the eye bolt so it can't slide thru the rubber bushing, or pulling the wire as far as possible beyond the corner, and putting a bead of silicone around the eye bolt, once it dries, it will prevent it from pulling too close to the post.. I have had fences that grounded out with about an inch of space... they can be finicky... GOOD LUCK

You're supposed to get a "city slicker" friend to test the fence for you ;) If she goes through it you may need to hook up the bottom line too. Make sure to check it periodically as it doesn't take long for horses to figure out when the fence has grounded out

I would have chosen another area for the ground rod. If the ground dries out it will not work. looks you have down spout near by. That may be a better spot. I have mine right beside my Central air system, that way when it is hot and I have the ac on the condenser is drip watering my grounding rod automatically.
@xitro20xx

i think the rod is long enough, so no problem with dry ground

Wet ground is not required. A 'ground rod' can be placed almost anywhere and does the job. We never used a ground rod like he did, just a short 2-foot piece of rod stuck in the dirt or a metal fence post nearby (the one he mounted the charger on would have worked).
@Greenwashedhipppie
@Greenwashedhipppie 7 лет назад
Richard Taylor Depends on the soil type. What work's some place, may not work other places. Water conducts electricity. Thus, wet dirt grounds better than dry dirt.
@xitro20xx

but the rod was long enough to get enough "wet dirt" and he doesn't life in a an desert. it will work ^_^

I just added two solar powered wires to the top of my 3 rail wooden fence to prevent a fox from rousting on the top rail eye balling my two small dogs. The railed fence has a wire fence on the inside of the rails to prevent the dogs from roaming outside of the yard. After installing, I'm now wondering if this will even work. If the fox try's to jump to the top in an effort to reach the top rail will the animal even get a shock since he/she is not grounded. Your thoughts?

I’m using the same box you are 5 mile 10 joules, I drove a copper ground rod 6 feet down, waited the 3 days for it to charge, and I have everything hooked up correctly to the ground and the fence, the wire I’m using is a 14 gauge wire. It is working , but I just don’t think it’s powerful enough at all, when I touch it I feel the shock, but it’s like a small static electricity, the kind you get when walking on carpet with socks on then touching something. What did I do wrong ? Is the wire from the box to the grounding rod and fence wire wrong ?

Typically poles like that are fiberglass. You can build long runs with those type of poles. Corners are a bit trickier because they have force on them in two directions and they do tend to sag .

Thanks for the video. My problem is squirrels. I saw a youtube vid where the guy said to run 2 wires. The first @ 3" above finished grade and another 3" above that one. Can this be a fire hazard if there is any dry brush @ that height? My fence is only 3' high. Can't squirrels just jump over that? My garden is under 1000 sqft. The cheapest I have found on eBay is a $65.00 5 mile solar charger. Will I need more than 1 ground rod? Can I lay the rod horizontally in a trench if I can't pound it into the ground?. Thanks
@kansasgardener5844
@kansasgardener5844 4 года назад
Yes it can be a fire hazard. Also you just don't want anything touching your fence! No you can not just bury the ground rod but with a small fence it would only need to be a few 2-3 feet deep. Ground rods need to be in contact with moist soil. Also don't use household wire it can short circuit. They make insulated wire just for electric fences for hooking up the charger.
