It seems like we use more and more solar electric fencing every year. Its a vital part of what we do and how we grow. This video is our opinion of the solar chargers that we own and have used for extended periods of time.

I’m an electrician as well and could not get my new 10mile American farm works to ground properly. 3 8ft rods 10 ft apart, could not get it to spit out a charge. Took it back, bought the Gallagher S40 and it worked instantly. You also don’t have to charge the Gallagher for 3 days first like the American farm works. Gallagher all the way.

Very well done video. I appreciate honest no-nonsense reviews. I purchased an American Farmer 10 mile solar unit. Thought it was an oversight that the clips weren't with the unit. Now I will have to do another 30 mile trip to get what should have been included. Not a good start. If I have the problems you have had with the 5 mile unit I may solve it by burying the unit in a landfill or use it as a brush pile fire starter.

Since DC travels on the outside of a wire, the slightest corrosion can impede the flow/connection. Just like my vehicle batteries - ALL of my DC connections get a gel - like - Super Lube Anti Corrosion and Connector Gel | 82003. Or any gel from the auto parts that is made for your battery terminals. Particularly important when mixing 2 types of metal at the connection. (copper to aluminum) Some people use Vaseline but I find it drips off when our GA temps start to rise. I'm a big fan of Gallagher. - The charger and the comedian (Sledge-O-Matic) .. -KJ

I’m 25 years in the electrical trade. We use No-loks on Aluminum wire as an anti corrosion measure. You are absolutely correct on DC current. The poly wire we use for our fencing isn’t to prone to corrosion because the the steel strands are twisted with the poly and don’t touch. But I am going to check my older connections now! You should have your charger on a 4x4 off the ground, it's filthy. Also in the electric fence controller manuals they call the fencing you have as "temporary" and shouldn't be used for an electric fence.

Thanks for the advice. These sets get moved all the time most of the time they are on a t post as the slot on the bottom s designed. The blue and black charger that looks like it on the ground is designed with spikes on the bottom the go directly in the ground. I only have one charger that says do not use with poly wire. It’s a 120 volt plug in charger. Some of these chargers came with the temporary poly wire netting that they energize. I’ve had one of these chargers running poly wire for going on 6 years without any trouble yet.

To my surprise I’ve had zero problems with grounding on the s20’s or s40’s that we use. We use an s40 on 1/4” polyrope for cows and it will knock your socks off 900’ away from the charger. Hey man, so I have a red sizzle Solar charger hooked up to 3 lengths of rent a coop poultry netting fence and everything was working just fine. Then all the sudden it stopped working… nothing changed about the fence set up. I use 4x 1.5ft ground rods that are pounded all the way in the ground and wired together with good clamps and wire. My charger is in the middle of the fence run. I know the charger is working because I redid all my ground rod connections today and got shocked. I’m at a loss as to why the fence no longer works. There are no breaks, there are no wires under the spikes(which have insulators anyways) and ther is very very little sagging onto the ground, just in one uneven spot. Like I said it was working now it’s not… it has been raining very heavily hear tho, but I thought wet ground only helps an electric fence… my ground is very sandy and decomposed granite…but it was working fine before… I dunno

I had this problem a while back with a charger. Everything seemed to be exactly how it should be. I’d test the charger and I was getting 7,000 to 8,000 volts DC. Hook it back to the fence and it would drop to 2,000 volts DC which is nothing, can hardly feel that. I searched and searched. Changed stuff re did the grounds. I finally grabbed a second charger. Everything worked perfect! I ended up changing the battery out on that charger. Fixed it. 2.5 years old and the battery was bad. There is also a channel that the guy does nothing but fence charger repairs. Lots of videos. Can’t remember the name. Search fence charger repair. Hope this helps.

You're not connecting your netting to the charger correctly. This alligator clips go on the metal clip at the first post, that way the power goes directly to all the horizontal wires at once. Clipping onto polyrope doesn't give a good connection.
@tillmanfamilyfarm7759
@tillmanfamilyfarm7759 Год назад
Correct. But for netting openings when moving animals around you can’t always get your charger in direct sunlight. Which causes a actual problem after a few days. I’ve never had a fence test different no matter where the charger is connected. But when everything is just right I like to connect to the metal clips.

I have a few questions. Do you have a charge controller between the solar panel and battery? Are you using a new or used battery? Please explain your ground rod. What kind is it and what’s the ground like. Dry and hard or loose, wet, mud? Are you use any metal post? Have you tested the charger without it connected to the wire? These answers will help narrow do the issues. Sounds like voltage drop. Can be caused by bad ground or bleed off. Wire to close to metal. You should here a popping sound. To much brush or grass touching the wire.

@@tillmanfamilyfarm7759 Thank you for the quick response. I have a Renogy charge controller of which I hook according to the image the controller shows. I think there are two things that you point out that may cause my weak fence. The battery is not new and I use a T-post of which I grind the bottom that goes to ground and also grind the part where I connect the negative terminal to and drive it down to about 3 ft into the ground. My ground is moist and I use plastic step in fence post to run my poly tape. I do plan on getting 3 actual grounding rods and space them 10ft apart as the instruction suggest and hope that helps. Also besides brands is it better to buy sections of electric fencing then buy a charger separately, or buy a start up kit & add another fence section? I seen your other vid & I definitely want more of the premium style fencing I don't want to deal with adding post's between to prop the sagging fence. Yep. 28 years in the electrical trade. I’ve fixed more true grounding problems than anything else.

Your soil may be too dry on that chicken ground rod.

Try pouring water down the rod to see, if that helps. I heard ground rods were best placed on the north side of a building or in a wet/moist area of soil.

It wasn’t the ground in this case. It was the charger. I changed it out and everything was just fine. You are correct and the soil being too dry. You can increase the resistance by pouring water around a ground rod if your in a drought. But that also means that you probably had an insufficient grounding system to begin with. Unfortunately I’ve been in the electrical trade for about 28 years and have dealt with more grounding issues then I care to remember. Thanks for watching!
