I guess I missed the episode, but I’m guessing the ram pump didn’t work out ?
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 года назад
Great Question! Ram pump as a permanent hassle free system just isn't feesable. It works, it pumps but there's constant maintenance and upkeep. You basically have to keep your eye on it twice a day to ensure you're still pumping water. Then there's the freeze factor associated, it's just not a permanent setup...can't leave the farm for a day without something going wrong

Thank you for another great video. Can you share your rationale for not using the spare vertical pipe for twisting stability? I understand the second group of four solar panels was overkill.

I came up with the idea to use my pickup truck to raise and lower my well pump in and out of the well. Tie the cable to the hitch and pull forward to pull out the pump and back up to lower.

Iv´e been struggling with batteries for years, pumping water with an off grid system. I realized that this system is exactly what i need. Taking away the pump from my house is huge difference, since it´s about 1.7 KW/h less. Plus, the battery bank had to be pretty big to sustain that consumption without damaging the batteries (some lasted less than a year!) Thanks for the upload

I am from a colder climate but we drill a 1/16 weap hole in the tubing so the well drains below the frost line. Solar wells will freeze solid at night.

I worked construction building commercial solar fields. During the final QC walkthrough, we had a few panels that needed to be replaced. When the electricians disconnected one of those MC4 connectors, there was about a 16" power arc. Very powerful.

Have you checked the price of a new complete windmill installation lately? It would cost double this install....and doing it without special equipment would be very difficult. We replace thousands of windmills every year....I know folks think they look cool but wait until they have to work on them. Some ranchers even leave the windmill up for looks but put a solar pump in for maintenance free water.

My thought exactly. I thought cows rub against anything that doesn't shock them. Raccoons and other critters (some two legged) can also cause problems. Better consider caging it in, instead of using the panels as shade. maybe also electrifying it; I hope we are both wrong. Also, it isn't too hard to imagine some thief getting electrocuted while trying to steal the solar panels. Electric utilities have paid millions to families of thieves who were electrocuted while stealing copper wire.

@chelemichele1524 3 года назад
@@marlinl.306 1.. if your stealing something and you get hurt.. well they/families shouldn't be able to sue.. that's just wrong.. and after he put the panels on I think he said he would be putting a fence around it..

@@chelemichele1524Best I can remember the thief had been a lineman at one time, and had an understanding of how the safety equipment at the substation works, and he thought he had tripped the recloser (giant breaker), but it failed to work. I think the court found the power company guilty of negligence. agree completely that criminals should not have the same rights as law abiding citizens. I didn't catch that he was planning to add a fence. I remember him mentioning that the cows could use the solar panels as shade. so the fence can't be very far from the panels. Thanks for letting me know. Oh, and Josh, thanks for putting out videos like this one. I never considered a pump without a battery. I hope it works great for you. If you are putting a fence around the solar and well a simple trick you can do is to add a small chain link fence just outside that and plant some faster growing berry bushes between the fence lines as the cows will think they are getting a treat as they eat what they can reach. You will still get some berries on the inside of the fence with what is between them being for the wild animals in the area with the only real work you need to do is to cut the old limbs as they grow in but you can dispose of them by simply tossing to the cows.

Pumping water during the day to an elevated tank, or a ground tank at the highest point on the property is the most efficient solution. Use the free and reliable solar (it works everyday of the year) to pump water to the tank, you have your water and energy (gravity) stored in one. Perfect for that extinguishing the night time fire. Josh said it, store water not energy, just store your water up a bit higher, gravity is great at distributing water :-) Tanks are cheaper than batteries, locally produced, environmentally friendly and have a much longer life.

Each post was for 1 rack of 4 panels, as you can see....the second post is too close. Nothing is at risk, and the racks are not connected. We got our specs confused and I needed to double the distance between posts...so in the next couple weeks I'll go back and install another post, keep the existing post for a nice flag pole. Mistakes happen, communication error...everything isn't perfect all the time my brotha. I had Eric there to guide me for 1 afternoon and 1 full day, not enough time to correct the error. Yep...nobody is perfect

So what? You changed your plans but you still could have connected the two posts to advantage at no additional cost. As a matter of fact, if you had connected the two posts at proper distance before backfilling post holes, you could have eliminated the welding job altogether.

I guess you can do that when you instal yours, Joe. You probably ought to go into the sales and installation business yourself!
