Thank You for your video. I have a star nut one with a sheared bolt and I never considered leaving it in there and pounding a new one in its place

Great explanation! Quick question: if you need to cut it a second time, can you use one of these tools to drive it in deeper and then cut the fork again? Not sure how long I should cut my fork and if I'd need to cut it a second time this could help.

Thanks for video and advice can I fit star nut if the forks already fitted into the bike and has a wheels on?

Technically, yes. Just be extra careful, lock out the fork, leave plenty of room for the tool and stabilize the fork to frame as it may jump around because there is no stem to compress the fork to the frame.

I’ve scratched up the underside of my crown race. I’ve used extra fine sandpaper to smooth it out. Since the side where the bearings sit on is not damaged, Im guessing the crown race is functionally ok? Thanks

Alternatively you can just screw the top screw into the threads and whack the screw head to push the star nut in. If goes in crooked; simply tap the side of the screw head to straighten it. Hasn't failed me yet!

Yes, like a compression plug used for carbon steerer tube? I did in my Surly.

I really wish the bike geniuses would invent some other way of putting a thread into the steer tube. Getting those sfns into that tube straight is the most difficult part of a bike build in my opinion. May have to invest in that tool....although it still looks difficult.

If i want to push the existing star nut deeper so i can cut excess fork, i just whack it with a hammer using some metal bar to make contact?

Try using a replacement top cap screw to insert and then smack it.

I am 5' 6" is a 53cm to big for me?

Depends on your leg length. My inseam is 31”. I can ride a 53, 54 okay. Depends on the frame geometry as well. You can use the stem length to dial you in. I would guess 51-53 is in your ballpark.

And that's why a have a tube that goes around steer tube, (steer tube outer dimention=tool tube inner dimension) ... Just drop the star ut on the bager, and hammer away. Good 2B a plumber:) .

@@BikeTeacher yeah... I cut a tube, wide as my hand, more or less... About 2 inches over steer tube, and on top just slide the banger in... It keeps it straight as a guide, as u mentioned... I know there's probably legit tools out there that r similar,,, but I only changed the nut once... Little tip is also if the "guide tool tube" is little to big in diameter or can't find correct sized tube to use... I take rubber O rings.. We use a lot of press fittings in plumbing,,, so I took few rings out. Good to have😁👍
