In this video, I show you how to install a transmission temperature gauge in your truck. The truck used in the video is a 1995 Ford F150 with the AODE-W also known as the 4R70w transmission. The temperature sensor screws into the test port on the driver's side of the transmission.

Instead of soldering into the fused wire, I found the use of Add a Circuit or Add a Fuse to be cleaner. They plug into the spot where the fuse is. There is a fuse for the existing circuit and a 2nd fuse for the new circuit. They come in a straight form or 90°. These are very quick. They don't alter the protection of the original circuit. The short piece of wire attached can then be soldered or crimped to the new wire. Also, no need to add an inline fuse as the circuit is already protected. I usually attach a piece of printed label tape to the new circuit so that I or future owners can easily determine what is new circuit is powering.

Good video. Been browsing online for the better part of a couple hours at transmission temp gauges as well as mounting options. Got a older Ford truck and im running out of room as I already have a CB and switch pod mounted under the dash below my steering wheel already so not sure where I could mount a temp gauge that will be visible without looking around the steering wheel.
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 5 лет назад
Milner62 Thanks! Sounds exactly what I did before I came up with this mounting idea. I didn’t want to look around the steering wheel either. So it cane down to this idea or building a pod box to sit right on top of the dash above the radio. Anyhow, thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it!🤙

@@TheMinuteMasters, I picked up a AutoMeter 2 1/16" gauge mounting cup I think I am going to see how it looks I think I can pull the center most screw out of my windshield pillar and place a piece of rubber between the plastic and the metal to help hold it in place without cranking too hard on the screw. That way if I ever decide to get rid of the gauge or if Dakota digital ever comes out with a more modern analog gauge set for my truck I can make changes without trying to track down obsolete interior trim pieces.

Thank you for the video. Can you mention the brand you use or trust, and if that test port is working well for you. I've read that once the fluid gets hot enough to show 225 in that spot, it's going to take a long time to get it down, vs before trans cooler? ( That fluid is coming from torque converter and you will see it change if you drive it hard up a hill)...I'm looking for advice
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 5 лет назад
Martin Pilat No problem man!🤙 Glad you enjoyed it! So the gauge is AutoMeter brand and it’s considered the best. You can even read reviews everywhere and everyone says Auto Meter is the way to go. The test port works great! From what I can see, transmission temperatures don’t typically fluctuate rapidly. It usual rises slowly depending on city vs highway driving (higher temps for slow bumper to bumper traffic). As far as I’m concerned, if my transmission ever gets close to 225, then it’s time to add a bigger cooler. Ideally, I would like to keep the temperature around 190.

Hi can you please tell me what is temp difference on the external pan and internal approximately?
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 3 года назад
That’s a good question. I’ve heard many theories as to what location is best for reading transmission fluid temperatures. The more internal the battery. Otherwise, the fluid line that goes to the cooler isn’t a bad spot. As for the temperature difference, I don’t know. I’ve never measured it.

So I did this work in 2017 and my transmission is still pulling strong to this day. It’s still my DD too. Granted, I pulled TOO much weight moving to Iowa and the torque converter seal went bad. But…that’s my fault.

@@TheMinuteMasters Thanks alot for getting back with me. I have 220,000 on my 95 with the 4R70W. I removed the small external cooler and replaced it with an E40D cooler, twice the size and cooling surface. It held a little more fluid too. It's just a little tricky opening the hood, but not bad at all. I also have a 1994 Flareside 4x4 with a 5.0 E40D. I'm installing the updated Neutral Safety Switch in it. I hope this fixes my problem with the shifting that just happened suddenly. Fluid isn't burnt just leaks bad. It sat for awhile before I bought it and actually ran good after a tuneup and a new fuel tank/ pump and maintenance. I actually like the 4R70W better myself. I know there's an in depth video on RU-vid of rebuilding it. Thanks for the Videos my friend, hope you continue to make them.I need a Bronco tank for the Flareside, 4x4 Flare's only came with 1 Tank and it's too small. Thanks for that paint video too, gotta get some of that for the Silver P71 Crown Vic. Every OBS F150 I've had, which is 5, the Converters are always plugged, found some small Y shaped pipes on Silicone Intakes, but the spacing is too far apart to fit the over and under pipes that enter the 1st Converter. True duals on the 95 with 40 Flowmasters and the 3.55 limited slip Rear I got from a wrecked truck really made a difference. MPG didn't get heart from the 3.31 open diff either, much better Traction. Thanks again, really appreciate you taking the time make those videos.

@@bobbywren123 No problem Bobby! Nice! Heat really kills these transmissions. I really wish I had increase the size of the cooler on my truck when I first had the transmission rebuilt. I am instaling a digital temp gauge, which wont be visible without being backlit aka when my headlights are on, and it dims as you turn the dim switch. I would prefer to have it almost exactly as your settup, but always be backlit regardless if my headlights are on or not (but obviously off, when my vehicle is) Any suggestions? I thought about an external dim switch of some type for backlight power not sure though
@TheMinuteMasters
@TheMinuteMasters 5 лет назад
Dave Upton Nice! That makes sense and is pretty simple. In the video, I use a test light to find what wire is linked to the running lights. Now one of those lights is a constant power. I ran one wire to the constants power for the gauge and a second wire for the light. All you need to do is put both the back light and power wire to the same constant power source. You can wire the gauge directly to the back of the fuse panel or to the headlight switch. I believe the constant power for the headlight switch is the large red wire with yellow stripe.

Thank you much. Only got 2 weeks before my gauges are shipped... lol. I was just wondering if I should devise an external controler before it gets here or not, but ill try to just splice and keep it as flush with stock settup as possible like yours. Thanks for the info.

@@TheMinuteMasters well, all my stuff from summit has arrived. I chose some really cool gauges that have internal dim settings. One is that they go 50% power when headlights are on so that its dimmer at night, not illuminating the whole vehicle in aviation green like the hand of god. Anyhow, I suddenly realized I never found out the thread size on the tranny plug! Kit comes with 1/8 inch sensor, and 1/2 inch adaptor. But my coolant is 3/8 and I had to order two of those. Any idea what that thread size is? You have the AOD, but I got an E4OD im just gonna take a stab in dark and say they are the same size.

Dave Upton Nice! That’s cool! That will look awesome once you have it set up! It’s s Transmission temp gauge right? I can’t quite remember the thread size. I would just try threading it in and see if it works. I can’t imagine Ford changing the thread type in between transmissions.
