How to Install a VPN Router

This is a HOW TO video where I'll show you with actual wiring, how to assemble a home network from your DSL provider's Modem, to your Wifi routers including adding a BraxRouter. This will show you a network with a VPN trunk and a non-VPN trunk and the options for wired or wifi on each network segment.
A BraxRouter when used in a wired configuration as shown in this video is different from other solutions which may support VPN routing. The difference is that this allows wired VPN gigabit trunking. Wifi routers only do Wifi routing if a VPN client is enabled.
This video was made because of people asking me how I set this up very frequently.

I like your style of no unnecessary talking and getting to the point. I have set up home networks years ago and I'm interested in figuring out how a VPN service I pay for compares to a VPN router at home. This sentence from your information above confuses me. "Wifi routers only do Wifi routing if a VPN client is enabled. By VPN client do you mean a paid for service. I'm here to learn. Thank You

My challenge would be to use your pon router for my wired and wireless connections, but still keep the network shared drives in synology type nas available for the other 2/3 of household that are stuck on ios and not security minded at all.. cascading routers can be problematic for me as to if I am downstream or upstream from shared resources. mt challenges are trying to keep all 3 generations of us sharing an internet connection happy. Thanks for this! I was misunderstood some of your content before and thought there shouldn't be non vpn router at all cause phones will locate that known router location and expose everyone, but this video clarified things. Does your vpn router software allow use any vpn service which offers wireguard or open vpn config files? Also what's your opinion about Windscribe vpn?

Just a tip. You could use a NanoPi R4S instead of a Raspberry Pi. The Nano comes with 2 Gigabit ethernet ports, but no WiFi - that needs an adapter, but you won't need the USB-to-Ethernet adapter. However, if you're going to connect it to a WiFi Router anyway, you can just use that WiFi from the router instead. Comes in 1GB RAM and 4GB RAM versions. I have a NanoPi R4S 4GB and have it set up as a firewall. Works great.

Question: My cable modem (that I purchased) has a built-in router. I know you briefly addressed this at 2:53, but I don't quite get it. Could I bypass "wifi-1" (in your setup) and go directly to the Brax router and switch? Thus, my built-in router would be *my "wifi-1"* that I would use for banking, Netflix, etc. What kind of configuration difficulties might I experience? Would I have to contact my ISP?

It is also possible to install DD-WRT or OpenWRT on a secondary router as a VPN router. A bit more complicated...maybe...

I have question for you about this kind of set-up. I run a 4G router to get my ISP (nothing else available for me). I have a home network in which all my wired devices connect to 16 port switches. I use a few things wi-fi, but only if I have too. I also am running some Home Automation devices, most of which is done local via a Hubitat hub and my own mics/speakers for voice, but I do use a couple Amazon devices that I can and do run with setup, but not required. Also running a couple NAS devices (wired). I have about 30 devices (at this time) that I have assigned static IPs to via my 4G router. Your solution is pretty simple for most, but for me, I need the VPN router to site between my 4G router and my switches. This creates a problem if I am not able to DHCP devices in the pi router. Are you able to do this with the software you are installing on your pi's? If so, can it be done thru a GUI and is there a device number limit? If I were to put a pi vpn between my current router and my switches now, it doesn't work correctly as far as the correct static IP's being assigned when the local devices talk to each other. I sure hope you reply to your comments. Thanks

How do you feel about vpn in general? I hear it works, most of the time, but sometimes it will still allow unsecured data. I wonder what the difference is between the software, and a piece of dedicated hardware. Such as, does the hardware help further with protection? I wanted to dedicate an old computer for this in my home network to be a vpn and firewall but didn't know this device existed.

Is there a way to add a wifi mesh network like Orbi or Velop behind a wired VPN router? I'm thinking something like ISP router w/ WiFi disabled --> wired VPN router --> wifi mesh (primary node connected via ethernet, rest of the setup as designed for the mesh). Would that place the entire mesh network behind VPN since the Ethernet it's creating a mesh from is coming from a VPN router?

Hi Rob, how can I check if my ISP router / modem which is combined will work with your Brax router? I really want to buy one. I’m in UK and need to make sure I am able to set it up before I buy it. I’m not that techy so any help appreciated. Would there be something in the settings I can check. I watched the video on how to set it up but it didn’t help my situation. Thanks in advance Edit - after doing a bit of reading I need a router that supports DCHP option 61. Does yours?

Hello Sir, My problem is that in our locality we have "fiber to home" connections, even though these fiber connections have a very bad latency (tested now- 127 ms) and low speed (about 35-40 mbps), and there is no separate ONT device, ONT and Router comes as a single device, what should I do if I want to use Tor router?; and should I keep the native wifi open from the operator's ONT+Router device? Or Should I buy another router for the VPNless wifi connection that may be needed for special occasions?

Baños will actually negate you if you are in a different country or city, but if you use a VPN at the same city where your bank is you will be able to login without any issues.

Hey Rob, So with the two routers when you are going to do banking on the non-VPN router - how is it easily switchable? I would just go into wireless settings on the computer and select a different router? then when done go back to the VPN Router? and is the Brax router compatible with my Google wifi mesh network? I currently use Nord VPN software, and would like this setup, but have to ask where does the Brax router send my stuff through?

What if you're not hooked to a landline for internet? We have line of sight microwave from way down in the valley below. Can you still make it a VPN? Or would it be pointless?

If you have a router in your home, you can have a network-wide VPN.

Rob! Do you upload your RU-vid videos from a vpn connection? Can it create any problems? Because I came across several threads where users complained that they had problems accessing their RU-vid/Google account from vpn connection as their behavior seemed suspicious (from what I have understood, they seemed to use vpn not consistently, but only from time to time) Or there's no need using vpn when you are logged into your RU-vid account at all?

Rob, if you didn't want to sacrifice internet speed wouldn't it be better to just use a VPN app on whatever device you are using (ie., phone or pc) rather than create another wifi (VPN it) using your Brax Router which decreases your internet speed down to 50 mbps?

Is there a brax vpn router with 1000 or 10,000 mbs ethernet ports instead of 20 mbs USB ? I have wifi range extenders at over 1770mbs. We use 10,000mbs cat 7 cable to feed it from the Internet router which is currently 1000 mbs. If I put the brax router in between the Internet modem and 1770mbs range extender what speed can the brax router flow data ? Using a USB 3 to ethernet adapter at 20mbs is a waist of my 1000mbs internet router. Especially as 10,000 mbs is coming soon.

Silly question Rob: can a device ARP through a guest network with a different DHCP IP subnet and reach the main DHCP IP subnet (i.e. Main network is on Class A and Guests are on Class C)? I ask because I use a recent ASUS AC3100 router with ASUSWRT-Merlin Firmware and was curious of this since these types of sites build data maps as you also mentioned. I was curious if they could do such things with a Guest Network and if so, understood. Lastly, do you offer OVPN profiles for routers such as mine with steps for security or do you strictly prefer to use the router as a one stop shop? I ask on behalf of those who might be on a budget. Thank you for your time, new sub here and still getting the lay of the land! Learning quite a bit from you and from online Uni.

Won't each device be vulnerable through its cellular data connection, if Wi-Fi slows down. (Most devices auto-switch between the two). How does this device work around that?

If I remember correctly, Google services use the Mac address to map the location of WiFi networks, so even if users with location enabled are not connected to your network, if they are nearby they can report your Mac address to google by using mobile data.

Yes. that's true of standard Google Android phones. But that's not your device Mac Address. That's the Wifi router's Mac address.

You could just run a script to periodically change the MAC address, or just tell the router (via software/firmware) to not distribute it's MAC address to any device and instead force yourself to manually type in the initial MAC address on the client device that wants to connect to the router, there's other ways you could go about this too, you don't need hide you MAC address, you could use alternate methods of distributed networking, or you could implement active protection from such surveying methods by combating it..... You can look into that on your own time if you want more information on that subject. Don't ever "leave it to another day", protect your network before it even goes online for the first time, don't take any risks, and inform people around you of the risks they are exposed to. We aren't living in the 90's anymore, everything you do can be publicly monitored by any person very easily, even if it is digital. This is about a fight for continued freedom and a right to speak freely and live with privacy & security.

Nice. Now, if my banking connection has to go through non-VPN router, will the 3rd parties know my IP address and thus my location? This would also mean I should not connect any other devices to such non-VPN port or have but one (fixed) device for internet banking.

Do I have to go into Spectrum and reconfigure the Spectrum settings?? Or do I just connect everything the way I see it in the video and just configure the beach router setting?

All you need is to make sure you have a Spectrum MODEM ONLY. Return the MODEM/ROUTER. Get your own Wifi routers
