You are most welcome. I am glad to know I could help you. I am going to follow it up using the Netgear router as it's configuration menus are totally different (Netgear Genie) but the configuration still uses the same parameters. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Thanks so much Richard, This video is everything I needed. So I was confused at first because I failed to read "dedicated". No problem, I have plenty of routers.to spare. I'm trying to secure my office setup which is a bit different: My "home" router is provided by the ISP and happens to be installed in my offiice and shared by two neighbors so I cant mess with it. So currently I have my ownTpIlink Internet port connected to one of the eithernet hub ports. I should be OK now that I understand the flow.and make the corrections on a flow chart before I get started. FYI I found this link when I searched for "tp-link VPN," Thanks again!

Hi Richard and thanks for all the help and support. I currently have a 2 router setup (per your land cable video! works great) Can I also add a third router as a dedicated VPN for my whole network? i was looking at the TP-link 1200 as the VPN. Thanks again and congrats again on your RU-vid accomplishment!!

That's good to know Richard. I wonder if you can also get these AP's to do Point to Point VPN? I notice you are using Win10 - that too reports back with all sorts of details including browsing data whether you use a VPN or not. The more people using Windows 10 and use VPN the more Microsoft smiles because the data they have collected about you is more unique and therefore more valuable.

I agree with you. I use Ubuntu Linux most of the time and feel pretty good about it. You can get this TP-Link WR940N At Amazon: amzn.to/2EHkgCd or eBay: goo.gl/mvrG2Z to do PPTP by upgrading it to a third party firmware called DD-WRT. I have done it as part of my testing for this video and it works when configured correctly. I may make a video in the future showing how to do that too. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Good video and the points you made are good and multiple times which is needed. Post people need to hear multiple times so it will be automatic when changing routers. I will watch again with a router in my hands. Also raspberry Pi can also make you a VPN if you have the knowledge to make one. Thanks for the video and I will definitely try this. 73

Thank you for this great video, It really helped me understand how this dual-router setup is made but I came across this problem when I tried to do my own, my router (tp-link ac1200) doesn't have l2tp connection, does that mean that it doesn't support this type of connection or I need to enable it in someway?.If this router doesn't support l2tp connections, do u recommend flashing my other router (Neatgear r7100) with DD-WRT firmware or a VPN service provider custom firmware and use it as the vpn router and use the tp-link router as the main one ? Thank you again for your time.

HI Richard, Thank fot the Video lots of information there and for sure its one of the easiest i have seen. I would like to use another configuration: Connect a VPN router (wifi disabled ) directly to my cable modem and connect my primary Google wifi mash router (its all over the house) directly to the VPN router (in short MOdem>>VPN Router>>Google wifi) so I would have VPN to all my network . My question is: Do I need to configure differently the ip addresses in the VPN router? Thank you so much!

Great video - thanks Richard. I understand now How to decide if I wireless device goes through the VPN or not. But if the two routers have each a set of device connected to the LAN wired ports in their proximity and I would like some of wired devices to go through the VPN but theose are in the proximity of the main router (or even a wireless device close to VPN router to go through the main router) can I somehow do it (though a static route?) - or do I need each area of the home to have two routers?

Thanks for this video, Richard. Been looking for such a tutorial for some time. Let's say you have the following devices: 1. Laptops/desktops 2. Cell phones, android boxes, etc. 3. Personal Network Attached Storage (NAS). This contains private work files, and media files (digital movies and iTunes downloads). 4. "Internet of Things" (Smart TVs, Home Automation devices and everything in between). Questions for you: 1. To which network should you let these four device groups latch on to? Could you suggest a "rule of thumb" to decide which network to use for a particular device? 2. Where would you locate "Guest" access? 3. Would you suggest creating more networks within the existing network so each device group is isolated/contained from the other groups? Is it worth the effort (disregard the cost of additional routers)? Will this slow down the system? Any other concerns? Thanks in advance.

Hi Richard thanks for the excellent videos. I've been bingng during our COVID isolation. I am strongly considering the VPN router setup and I have a question about the VPN. I understand the VPN pipeline when the router is configured as you show in the video. At home, I only have to connect to the VPN hotspot and I have VPN security from laptop to the PIA server. When using a public Wi-Fi are there addition changes required on my laptop or phone ? Thanks again Jeff Hall

Thanks Richard for viseo. I have tried several attempts to set up TP- Link TL-WR841N v14 with sharksurf VPN. Unfortunately must be doing somthing wrong. In L2TP it only connects in Dynamic ip. It is however not connecting properly as shows IPA address and not VPN. I understand this verion of router cannot be flashed with DD-WRT. Shoul this router work with VPN.

Thanks fo the video. Can you set up a router VPN without a VPN provider? Also, where did you find the the new DNS # that you entered and is it an issue that DNS leak web shows Germany as location?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 2 года назад
You need the VPN provider to establish a private connection. Without the VPN provider, privacy would not be possible. As far as I know the service is not available for free. German location if it's NOT yours is perfectly fine. You can use other servers but PIA no longer publish them. I believe this is a list provided by a third party github.com/Lars-/PIA-servers Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Fantastic video. Thank you so much for walking through this! Did I hear correctly that the router is technically consider as a single client for the VPN service provider? so you could connect however many IPs your router can support, and it would still count as 1 client to the VPN provider? (Albeit Dial-up speeds per IP). What happens if you double VPN? What if I do this, and also use the VPN client on the machine? Could that some how introduce a leak?

How to change “channel” in wireless setting from Auto to either channel 1, 6 or 11 on D-Link DR-868L (AC1750 Dual Band Gigabit router)
@blacksnow90
@blacksnow90 4 года назад
It's in the WIFI advanced settings for the 2.4ghz. I wouldn't recommending touching that, and leave it on Auto. Typically AC routers will pick the best frequency based on any potential interference in the air space. If you're using an AC router, I would recommend connecting to the 5.0GHZ frequency anyway, since that would provide the best/fastest connection anyway.

I have a Arris NVG468MQ. Menu looks very different. I know it does passthrough but I don't know enough about routers to figure out how to apply this. Do you have any guidance ? Unfortunately this is Frontier's go to Fios router. I if you could share steps on this model, I am sure there are thousands of Frontier customers that can benefit. Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have access to the service or the equipment but you do. Perhaps you can find the same setting I show on it and configure it accordingly. I know these types of routers are very limited by design. But you may be able to do it. But you could always buy a dedicated router to do this with and connect it to the FIOS. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

I am confused. The guy who installed my home dedicated VPN router with Nord setup the openvpn client on my router with encryption settings certificate and configuration stuff from Nord. How does this method work as it only uses the simple login supplied by vpn service?
@frankdaeran352

As of Dec 2018, NordVPN’s servers stopped supporting L2TP/IPsec and PPTP connections. So this method won't work with Nord. support.nordvpn.com/Connectivity/Router/1225872552/Not-supported-routers.htm

Hi Richard I watched both your very informative videos for this modem and the Netgear one and tried to apply the settings to a Tenda N300 router without success. Are PIA still supporting L2TP or could it be the ISP blocking any other WAN connections. The router connected to the ISP is a Sagemcom F@ST 3184 cable modem/router. Tenda just says connecting continually. Any ideas?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
I can not say if this works with your gear as I do not posses the same gear or the same provider you have so there are too many variables to answer your question. I would suggest that you test your credentials with the PIA client to make sure you're using the correct ones by connecting with that and if it's possible try to connect using L2TP with the PIA windows client after you have successfully connected with that. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

@@richardlloydusa Hi again Richard and thanks for your speedy reply. When you say try the PIA client do you mean the stand alone app on individual devices as these work fine on a PC and Android tablet? How do I connect using L2TP with the Windows client as the software I downloaded is all automated unless you mean setting up a dedicated connection in Windows? Thanks again in advance of your assistance, much appreciated. BTW, I'm going to try my Tenda modem setup through a neighbours ISP to rule out the ISP blocking.

How or why would this be better than using the PIA app on your PC?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 5 лет назад
It's not really better it just gives you the option to have everything that connects to this Dedicated VPN router to be protected automatically, for instance a Roku would be protected as well as a tablet or a smartphone. Also PIA only allows you to connect 5 clients (which is more than most need) at one time to their service but the dedicated router counts as only one client on PIA VPN regardless of the amount of devices that connect to the router. Also you do not have to run a client on the PC and manually connect it either. But again it's a matter of preference. I use them both. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. Thanks so much Richard. I got this to work with an Asus ac66u router as my vpn router by using your connection settings to my primary router and Asus's vpn config settings page. My primary router's ip address is 192.168.1.1 so I set my vpn router to 192.168.2.1, but now if I type in either address I get my primary router setup page. Do I have to disconnect my vpn router from my primary to access it's setup page again?

I only have connection via mobilephone 4G network vith data limith each month. Express VPN said it is like thet for holding up the connection between me and the internet. I dont trust them at all. Can they steel my bandwith?

There are many ways your network could have been compromised (WIFI or LAN vulnerability, spyware, virus etc.) So yes it is possible that someone could steal your bandwidth and there are numerous ways that could happen. @@richardlloydusa Thank you for making this video :-) Nice! And thank you very much for your answer. Do you believe that a VPN host needs to make so many connections at once , for holding up my connection between my router and theirs? Have you measured how much data that flows thru your connection with your VPN host? EDIT: I´m sure that there is no spyware, virus etc. My wifi is always OFF, only wired here. I believe it is ONLY ExpressVPN that uses my datatraffic, at most half of my standard usage is going to them.
@richardlloydusa

As far as I know there should be little to none data flowing between you and your VPN provider that you do not initiate. If you ask for data you should get it otherwise it should not be flowing. Understand that devices and operating systems are continuously looking for and asking for data. For example your weather app on your phone will ask for an update periodically, Windows is always looking for updates and data to stream to you. Email clients are looking for email, etc etc. But if you take your connection down to one device that data stream "should" be very small in quantity. It should not be sucking up 10's of megabytes of data per day. Some routers have bandwidth monitoring logging if you have that then you could just take it down to just your router running on the connection and that "should" should be little to no data flowing. It's hard to analyse this from my chair but if you do some research you will find tons of ways to get an answer to this problem. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
