With the belt still on, place a large adjustable wrench or vice grip on the nut, and firmly smack it with a rubber mallet, without hitting the fan blades. I got one that had never been removed off a 20 year old truck easily. The threads are normal, so smack from your right to left. Or just rent the tool that locks the pulley in place from an auto parts chain store, but that creates extra steps.

There are actually holes on the water pump pulley. On the face of it. You can take a wire coat hanger run it through the hole, and twist tie it around the (framing) if the alternator. That will hold the pulley still. Then take a 2lb sledge if you have one, and either an adjustable wrench, or plumbers wrench and whack said wrench with the hammer and it will bust loose. I provided a video to help. One video is a guy who does one with a fan, and the other is a guy who shows you how to keep the fan from spinning.

He said " and fill the system with 50/50 blend of coolant and distilled water". That literally means 50% coolant and 50% distilled water. He didn't say (50/50 coolant) and distilled water. He says a 50/50 blend OF coolant AND distilled water. That is 100% correct. Anyone with any mechanical knowledge at all would know that means use either straight coolant and mix with water to a ratio of 50/50... or just fill entirely with the pre-blended stuff with no water.

I Got a 2005 tahoe 5.3l It needs a water pump It had a thermostat housing type that you could interchange just the thermostat itself and keep your old housing " if you wanted too of course" I guess it's called a 2 piece design?? To replace that type of thermostat and housing would have been close to $50 bucks.. So I bought the other style It's the thermostat and housing made together. Im stuck in the snow at the time of making this comment. I'm hoping this will work and not leak when I put it on. Also, ive bought a new water pump. The two gaskets that came with the water pump are not paper... They are metal looking with rubber? I've seen some videos of people using these types of metal looking gaskets without putting black RTV silicon on them. But I've also heard that these will leak and to always use paper gaskets with rtv on pump and on thermostat housing like you did in the video... I bought a tourqe wrench.. Something I've never used.. I've ALWAYS...just tightened down bolts till I felt like they were good to go. Im reading that its 11 and then 22 ft.lbs on the 6 water pump bolts. 11 ft.lbs on the thermostat housing. And either 18 or 37 ft.lbs ...not sure which one...on the pulley bolts that mount to the water pump?

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. Stumped. Have replaced water pump twice with new water pumps. Both time it has/is leaking from where the top hose/pipe connects to the water pump. After the truck warms up, coolant starts to slowly pool from where the “shiny” part of the water pump goes into the actual pump. Have tripled checked if the coolant is coming from the hose. It is not. Seems to be the seal from where the “shiny” pipe connects to the water pump on top. Going to try one more….any ideas?

Now it is a matter of doing some diagnostics. Is all the air bled from the system? Is the radiator cap holding pressure?Is the belt routed correctly? If equipped with electric fans are they connected and functioning. If equipped with a mechanical fan and clutch is the clutch engaging or is it beyond its life expectancy? Is the radiator clear and allowing the coolant to properly flow? Is the thermostat functioning correctly, installed correctly? I'll leave it at that for now. Lets hope one of the above resolves the issue.

Also, seeing the convo about the coolant types a few comments down reminded me... I went to buy some more coolant (due to the slow leak) and Adanced Auto Parts didn't have any Dex Cool. They told me the universal 50/50 was fine. That my 2005 Avalanche used to require Dex Cool but now that universal stuff will do just fine. Is the universal 50/50 coolant fine for my Avalanche? 2005 gmc half ton pickup, sierra...engine size unsure). I am getting a drip under my water pump, big when pressurized, small and consent when I open the reservoir cap, (relieving any pressure). (engine off), although it is still a constant leak. It seems to level off on the temp when driving, although, i can only assume it is still dripping the small drip. (If I fill the reservoir) It seems to leak from all over,in front and behind the pump location), when engine is hot and at a stop light, or just parked Question: Could this be a bad water pump?, hoses are just fine throughout. Can a water pump go bad and still leak, while still maintaining mechanical efficiency... Not sure where to turn, it seems to be leaking from all over, in front and behind the pump location on the engine. do you know of any other common leak points in this motor, besides hose connections and/ or water pump??? Thanks for any advise.
@AirtexFuelPumps
@AirtexFuelPumps 6 лет назад
A pressure test of the cooling system should help pinpoint the leak. While any connection to the pump; heater hose tubes, thermostat housing, can leak it is most likely the pump itself. Yes, a pump with a failed seal and bearing can continue to function. The question is... For how long? I recommend repairing the leak immediately.

This video makes anyone think they can just get this done in a hour or so. NOT TRUE. I got it done but it isn't as easy as this video makes it out to be!

This vehicle is equipped with electric fans. I do agree it would have been more beneficial to have one with a mechanical fan.
