Shower Windows are great. They can brighten up a small bathroom and make it feel just a bit larger. However, if installed incorrectly, a window in your shower can become a nightmare of wood rot, mold and decay.
So how do you install a shower window the right way? Let's find out, today, on Smith House.
When installing a window in a shower, proper waterproofing is essential. Tile and mortar are not waterproof! Windows leak! There must be an impervious membrane behind the tile and around the window. A fluid applied detail sealant like Polyguard Detail Sealant PW is a great way to waterproof the rough opening and tie into the Schlueter Kerdiboard waterproofing system behind the shower tile.

Talks about how good he installed this window, but NEVER shows how to do the installation. HORRIBLE and should not be titled “How to install” should be titled “ the caulk and weather seal I like”

I hear you. I didn't start filming until after the window was installed. The main point is to waterproof the rough opening before the window is installed. The fluid applied flashing makes an easy job of this. Just smear it on the framing, tying into the outside WRB and inside tile waterproofing membrane until you cannot see wood through the sealant, and you have a great waterproofed window opening that will shed water from the outside AND inside.

Thanks for this video. You mention that the sill is pitched 5 degrees toward the outside. Is there an opposite pitch on the interior of the sill to allow water from the shower to fall away from window and into the shower pan/drain?

Thanks! It can be a nightmare for sure. The wall was completely rotted when we tore into it. I am confident that the new system will keep water out until the next cosmetic remodel.

How old is the house? The spray foam looks like it got crusty but who's to say the backer rod won't also be crusty in 20-30 years?

A smaller window ⅓ the size ( top ⅓) would have been much better avoiding much, most if not all, of the water on it. It is just too low and will always get water pouring on it when taking a shower eventually leading to a leak. Sometimes the best way to avoid a leak is to not tempt nature. Contractors should use smart design as well as smart building techniques.

I know this video was mostly about water sealing, but is the window tempered glass? Here in the northeast a widow in a shower area needs to be tempered in case the occupant slips and crashes through the window.

Why not install a smaller higher up window? I have a window in my shower/tub wall which will be removing this summer and replacing with a smaller window that will be right below the ceiling.

All talk, no reason to watch this video. Just waves packaged products around while talking around the window. Does show caulking and backer rod installation - not what I came here for.
