It has been pointed out that at the 18:13 mark I explained the sealing at the top of the window completely opposite of what it should be. The house wrap along the top should be the layer you see when done. Seal it to the membrane. Watch this video fro a better example. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dC3_0srY0Rs.html

Excellent. I just did the first three windows in my new construction, almost exactly as you did. The top is the only difference, though minor. You mentioned the house wrap laid down first, then the membrane applied. I layed the membrane first, overlapped with the housewrap. Then using tape, seal the wrap down. Just another flap of protection.

Thanks Shannon. Great advice and very helpful for a beginner like me. I used your method on 3 windows I installed into a block wall shed after framing the openings. On the last 2 I added a metal drip flange above the window and covered the vertical part with another layer of sealing tape. Thanks again.

This is THEE BEST video presentation I have ever watched. Nice lighting, can see wherever you point or are talking about, not dead time or windblowing on microphone. REALLY appreciated your presentation, process, products and concept. Gave me the courage to attempt 1 or 2 for my beginning experience. Trying to find how/where to buy less than 100 RedZone corner guards. I want to use THEM as you directed because you can cut them to size. Considered Lightening Flash corners, but trying to pursue Resisto RedZone corner guards. THanks for such a fine presentation. We novices can really learn and emmulate your "simple" process so clearly demonstrated.

+Dean Nezerka I have seen techniques where instead of the corner guards, you just use the same peel and stick membrane- trim an 8 inch piece, and stick it at the bottom corners, folding half its width onto the sill, and the other half it's width onto the edge. You also have to overlap it 4 inches from the sill so that the other 4 inches stick out off of the exterior wall face. THEN you trim the membrane overlapping the wall face at a diagonal so that you can tightly fold it ONTO the wall face.

The corner protectors would seal better if you install them after the flashing, and on your bottom flashing, if you don’t have house wrap yet if you don’t peel off the paper and just throw a couple staples and when you do install house wrap you are able to lift the flashing and tape it over the house wrap, thanks for the videos!

Here's a tip for anyone reading comments, don't use a level. Let me now clarify. In the case of this window installation, where it appears to be approx. 6 inches from the soffit, a level window may not actually follow the long horizontal line of the soffit. This can make the window appear to be tilted when viewed from outside of the home. I use to install siding and ran into this issue many times. Aesthetically, you want to the window to "appear" level, not necessarily be level. Being that the long line of the soffit is very close to the window, I would use it as the reference to measure from, making each side of the window the exact distance down from the soffit. Inside the home you needn't worry so much about it as distances from the ceiling can be "corrected" visually with the trim that is installed around the window, giving the appearance of a level window. A window with no close horizontal references (in the middle a large wall with a gabled roof for example) I would certainly use a level. Obviously, discretion must be left to the installer. This is just my experience. As a note, if both sides of the window are the same distance from the soffit, it makes the siding piece that goes over the window easier to rip for installation as well. One more thing, I was always told to use 16 brights for installation (nails) for their grip strength on door and window installations. You don't want your nails backing out. I'm not sure if that's code, or just my inspectors preference, but tiny roofing nails would be frowned upon in my neck of the woods. Nicely done otherwise, and I appreciate the effort made for a quality video!
@danebradley9246

If you don't level your window it can be inoperable. When the sill is out of level that bad you should adjust with shims (if space allows) or call a pro to do some minimally invasive framing work.
@chaddts

Or have level soffit...if doing it yourself.
@paovang1548
@paovang1548 Год назад
You are correct. I did use a level and after going outside to look the window is off even though it's level.
@robburkhard9256
@robburkhard9256 Год назад
I agree with everything you said except for the roofing nails. I've pulled out plenty of windows that were a giant pain in the ass to pull out that used 1½" roofing nails. Also, if the depth/ throat of the window is not as thick as the wall it's better to make sure your reveal on the inside is even rather than making sure it's level
@prestonball4982
@prestonball4982 4 месяца назад
My company installed for three Lowes stores for 27 years. It sucks when something like a soffit made a level window look crooked. We always choose to level and plumb our installs, usually with a laser on tripod. Seems like overkill but if there was ever an issue the manufacturer reps would throw us under the bus if it was a fraction out of level. Most of our installs were impact single hung that didn’t allow any grace to work correctly. Choose your battles.

Seems that my shed window will take longer than normal to be delivered due to Covid. I wonder if its ok to install my soffits and fascia before installing the siding. Then I would butt the siding up to the fascia using a finish trim. This will allow me to get some work done while waiting for my window. My original plan was to install the siding first then install the fascia J trim over top. Any suggestions or recommendations.

Hello Shannon, Always I really do very much spiritually appreciated your tutorial DIY projects. I couldn't find someone to installed 5 windows downstairs without trying to rob me without a pistol. So DIY came into play. Your windows are the same that I purchased from a window wholesaler that saved me quite a bit of money. Champion was attempting to charge me over 5 grand for these windows. Instead of using nails I decided to utilize construction screws which in my opinion has better holding power. I don't have any membrane material or the corner plastic I saw in your video. I am going to home depot to purchase them. The replacement windows are double-paned and let down on the inside. I love them. The old windows are one pane and not energy appropriated. Once again Shannon keep up good work and I will continue to watch your tutorial videos. Hey, do you have a video on removal and installation of a fireplace? Take care of yourself and family. Be safe and practice social distance. Peace and Love In Yahshua Messiah, RE Morgan

Dupont makes a peel and stick tape that uses butyl instead of asphalt based adhesive. Always check for comparability. One complaint above was silicone cracking. With asphalt based peel and stick the silicone never sets up correctly. It's on the label. Also eliminates need for primer.

Without trying to bust your chops I see a few flaws in this video. First, you should use a sealant, not silicone or caulk and I like to see it run on the back of the flange over the nail holes to seal them as well. Secondly, had there been house wrap, you would have wanted to fold it out of the way until AFTER you installed the membrane on the head. Also the side pieces should extend beyond the sill piece. After the head membrane, another bead of sealant on the head extending an inch down each side, follwed by a drip cap, and then at the end fold the house wrap down and tape the slices from folding it up. If the membrane is on top of the house wrap and moisture enters any where above the window it can bypass your flashing. I do however agree with cutting the wrap back as opposed to folding it into the opening.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 10 лет назад
I had to rewatched the video, and I did explain the wrap at the head incorrectly. I agree that the house wrap at the head position should overlap the membrane and be taped to it. thanks for pointing that out. We have added a "popup" note on the video at that point.
@Redberryfarm888
@Redberryfarm888 5 лет назад
@@HouseImprovements (FYI...didn't see that popup note come up in the video at that point ....in 2019) Was a bit confused as your other non-flange window video showed the sticky membrane behind and then the house wrap over top of that - then tuck taped. Thanks for clarifying this!

With the rigid siding you can caulk all around the window . With flimsy vinyl siding you can't because it moves. Water in a "J" channel should run down to the bottom and over some kind of sill and over siding below the window.

If the windows you are installing are needing to pass a county inspection, check with them for all the requirements to save on failed inspections. The main thing they look for is the type of screws, placement and location and embedment of these screws. Also some counties are strict on the allowable gap around the window to the opening. In Florida, a safe rule is no more than 1/4”. You also don’t want it so tight that the frame is touching the opening. Everything else as far as sealant and operation of the window is no concern to the inspector but should be to you. Use high grade adhesive sealants like Vulkem 116 or Sikaflex 1a. It used to be that if you could buy it at Home Depot it wasn’t worth using. Now they sell Vulkem. Also, every screw location needs to have shims between the window frame and the opening. With this rule followed, as you drive a screw through the frame to secure the window, the window has no chance on being pulled out too far or a screw head ripping through the thin frame of the window or distorting the channel that the sash balance system moves up in down in. This tight grouping (Window frame, shim and opening) allows for the screw to do it’s job as designed and to not have excessive leverage on it during a big storm. This is the number one biggest fails I see in window installations. With all that goes into installing a window, there might not be much chance for this window to break free but it almost always warps the frame and affects how the window operates.

+Remmik so you would put a shim right between the frame and opening where your screws/nails are: This way, the window can't move left and right, enabling the screws to not take racking forces? If this is the case, do the shims have to be where the screws are, or is one or two on the corners of each side ok?

+Adam Lans; Hey Adam, I'm not sure how my comment above was posted under this video. It was meant for a video of single hung window going into a block opening and code questions. I'm sure it was my fault with so many tabs open.. For a fin window, like the one in this video, you would not need to shim on the interior between window frame and opening like I described above. Those technics are for a block opening on a window that operates (Flange window frame). In this scenario is where the install screws go though the side jams and header of the window frame (standing from interior). This is where it's crucial to have the proper spacing between window frame and opening and to have proper support behind every screw that is used to secure the window. This is more to keep the window tight against a solid structure and not have the possibility to pull the frame out to the sides when driving those screws in. BTW Just to restates how we refer to windows types. A flange window has a small lip (flange) that is used to only butt up against bucking in a block opening. This is where a solid bead of sealant is applied but no screws. The window is typically recessed into the opening and you would do a stucco return to it or trim. Install crews are on the inside jams and header of the frame. A Fin window has a taller lip (Fin) that butts up against the wood sheeting of a wood framed wall, with sealant behind as well. Install screws are driving through the fin into the wall to secure window. Considered a flush mount window. Stucco or siding is brought right to the window or banded wit trim. Install screws are never right at the corners so there would be no need to shim there. This is just to keep the frame straight when tightening those screws. Otherwise the frame will be warped at each screw or the whole side jam of the frame will "pickle barrel" out. This will make the middle of the window wider then the top and bottom width measurements and make the operation of the sash up and down difficult. I have even seen sashes fall out because of this. In single and double hung windows, the jams have a channel that the balances travel in and the sashes are attached to those balances. If you have windows that operate with difficulty then it's always going to be an issue with this channel in the jams or the balances with their corresponding shoes that assist the sash to go up and down.

6" from top and bottom. That puts shims just above bottom screws and below tops. Also just above center screw (double hung). The center screw should be left a little loose, then shimmed tight to create a uniform reveal between bottom sash and side leg. For larger windows shim at each screw to prevent warping/racking. Never shim at head(top). That makes the window a structural part of the wall. Not good.

Dont screw windows in, roofing nails only

@@Chris-iy4vrthere is nothing wrong with using screws vs nails. modified truss screw are best and are even spelled out as approved fasteners in window manufacturer’s install instructions. I have been using screws vs nails since 1998 in Florida, with the strictest requirements and needs and now in Washington state with some of the lax requirements.

Thanks for sharing! I like how you show the details and explain what you are doing and why. I don't think you ever explained how you were going to slope the window sill or how to slope it, though. Do you have any videos showing how to put a single-hung replacement window in for a shower? I'm wondering what would need to be done differently. I know generally the window sills slope downward to the exterior to allow rain and such to drip out, but in a shower, the slope needs to be on the interior toward the shower to keep water from pooling. I need to replace a window in a bathroom (that will be inside of a shower) and I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about it, without having to mess with the exterior vinyl siding too much. I'm going to replace some of the wood framing with PVC board and I'll have the walls completely opened up on the inside.

You need to tape that bottom flange and barricade the water at the exterior. If you leave that flange untaped in a high wind/ driving rain climate like a coastal situation, the negative pressure of the house will suck water up and in like a vacuum and it will drip down the interior of the wall.

I always apply liquid primer over the wood surface before doing this as I find the flashing doesn't hold that well to bare wood as it's quite porous, that's what is recommended by the manufacturer as far as I know. That liquid primer is insanely tacky when it dries much like the sticky side of duct tape, it really does have a purpose.
