The first time I was on camera. You get stiff. As you don't see the 5-10 other people behind that lens. The bright lights and equipment. It's a surreal experience till you get used to it. Just like the first time your told to get up in front of 100 people and give a speech in class. You're stone stiff.. Thank goodness they taught us that shit in grade school. As the teacher watched to see how many times you said Umm.. A dead give away you're amateur.

I own the first option and like it. Using a phone or Bluetooth dongle is barely any faster, if at all, as both of these options often have delays. Both are additional attack surface as well. The first option is very easy to add codes for roommates or burner codes for technicians or guests. Also, since the human twists the deadbolt the battery lasts an extremely long time. I like to call it ATP-powered. Moving a mass will drain batteries much faster.
@aaronbays4

Pretty slick installation, didn't have to change the exterior part of the lock, which would of course then require you to touch up the door. Although I doubt the reliability of these systems, I wouldn't take my metal key off my key chain. And I know this might sound cheesy, but if you need to give somebody a key to your house, get a little metal box and hide it, tell them where it is and tell them to put it back in the same place. Works for me.

the problem with that smart lock they mentioned in this video is the manufacturer has had multiple security breaches where hackers were able to take control of smart locks and open the doors.

It would be nice if you could have an entire episode on many different types of electronic locks and everything from deadbolts and up to doors that don't have a deadbolt to how you can have keyless, electronically, with and without keypad. For example it would be nice if I could have the option to remotely give someone a physical code that they can use when ever you choose. They can put their fingerprint on the door knob/handle. Your phone or tablet can get within a certain distance for the door to lock and unlock. The feature that would be nice is if you had a door handle/knob that had a camera and built in door bell. All you would have to do is touch the door knob/handle and it would act like a door bell. You would have a chime that you can place anywhere you would like in the home or apartment. This would be the hub and chime. Once someone touches the knob/handle the door bell will ring what ever melody you choose. At the same time when the door bell is rung you will get an notification on your smart phone or tablet in real time. The camera will kick on and you have the option to answer in real time from your phone/tablet etc. You can and here the person and you can record them. If it is someone you trust and want to grant access you can remotely unlock from a smart device. In the home/apartment you can plug in each room a light weight flat screen monitor that would plug in to a outlet and would mount on the wall. The monitor would have 8 to 10 pinhole cameras in and around the flat screen monitors. This flat screen will display the persons video image who rang the door bell. You can touch the screen and lock or unlock the door. The pinhole cameras on each monitor work together to cover as much of the room in all angles. On the app and the flat screen devices in the home/apartment you can capture video and sound while you are away or home if you wish. You can have one or have one or two of these in each room in your place. The door bell chime is the main brain and has a battery back up and it can plug into an outlet. If needs be you could hook up a wireless service to this system only if you choose. The doorbell and door knob/handle will hook up to the chime and the chime connects to not only your bluetooth but your Wi-Fi and router. I know there are many different options and it would be nice to show how you can have devices like these but how to protect yourself from hackers who can try to operate your door etc. There is different products and safety procedures to take to make shore your safe and the monsters that you want to keep out stay out and those you want in can come in when you want them to.

I know I'm a year late replying, but if you have the geofence set, it uses GPS and will not change the lock state unless you leave that area. It's large enough to where it'll know that you're home. So, you come home, it unlocks for you. If you manually lock it, it will not unlock again until you leave the geofence and come back.

Charlie J The hinge screws were originally left loose so that the door would line up square. After tightening the hinge screws, it is clear that the door frame is not square. Hack job. Although the rest of the work they did was fine. They re-insulated, re-sided, and installed 16 windows throughout my home about 7 years ago.

Oh the second options is perfect. Wife is home alone taking a shower. A stranger walks up to the door, touches the lock, lets himself in and the wife comes back down stairs to who knows what. Too many complex electronic devices with multiple points of failure are available to replace good tried and true mechanical devices. Sure you get some cool useful features but the failure rate on these things and the added security risks just aren't worth it.

If you buy the Doorbell Cam to go with a deadbolt , then you don't need the August Connect wifi adapter ($79) because it's built into the Doorbell Cam.

Probably easily hacked, has to rely on a WiFi connection and the power has to be on. People are just to attached to their cell phones. How about a good old fashioned Schlage, or if you want real security, an Everest Primus. I'm a HUGE fan of ATOH! By far the best program on TV. I try and get my son to watch it with me. He gets a kick from the guys back east accents. Bringing Kevin on back in the day was the best choice they could have made and Tommy is a true craftsman. All of the guys are great! +vegasfordguy Well said. Here's a scenario I've thought about: someone loses their phone, or more likely it gets stolen in a public place. The thief uses the phone to unlock their car, get their address from the vehicle registration, drives to the address, uses the phone to unlock the door, and disable the alarm system. People are getting so lazy and gadget crazy.

Vast majority of smart phones are locked (require passcode or finger print) and not very many people can unlock their car with their phone let alone a thief randomly find a victim's car from a stolen phone...lol. Dont be afraid of technology and lift that aluminum foil hat from your head...hehe
@prairiewanderer5040
@prairiewanderer5040 8 лет назад
Bryant NorCal How do you know what percentage of smart phones are locked? There are thousands of people that have the car unlock feature with their vehicles, and a lot of thieves don't pick people at random. This is not conspiracy ramblings, it's simply stating a real world scenario that could be exploited. Nice strawman though, re: technology. I have no fear of technology. I work mostly from my home miles from an city and have a multi-state customer base. The only problem I have with technology is many people are too complacent when it comes to tech security.

@jacklinkproductions
@jacklinkproductions 7 лет назад
Jas Dilo Close, but not quite true. He would not get in trouble for copyright infringement by mentioning the name of the product. That does not infringe copyright. However, This Old House is a television show on a network that has advertisements. They don't mention names of products because their advertisers may be in competition with said products and do not want to lose advertisers by advertising products within the show that are not paid advertisers. Make sense? Copyright infringement would be if they were using the name "August" and calling their own product by that name. They would be effectively stealing the name,but calling a product by its actual name is not copyright infringement and they have every right to mention the name of the product especially because it's in the form of an instructional/review type video.
