"How To Install and Use the Liquorix Kernel in Ubuntu - Complete Tutorial"

This video covers installing and using the Liquorix / Zen Linux kernel which is designed for gaming and multimedia production in an Ubuntu based distribution.

Liquorix is a distro kernel replacement built using the best configuration and kernel sources for desktop, multimedia, and gaming workloads.
Step 1. Installation.
Open a Terminal window and run the following in sequence.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:damentz/liquorix && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-image-liquorix-amd64 linux-headers-liquorix-amd64
Reboot to apply.
Step 2. Switch Between Linux Kernels.
Install GRUB Customizer using your package manager.
Once installed, launch, navigate to General settings / advanced settings and change GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE from HIDDEN to 0, and set GRUB_TIMEOUT to 5 or higher.
Save the settings.
Step 3. Remove Liquorix Kernel.
Boot into any kernel apart from Liquorix.
Install Synaptic Package Manager using your package manager and launch.
Search for Liquorix, mark both the image and header for removal and once the process is complete then the Liquorix kernel is removed.

Hi great video !! I would like it if you do some video about undervolting on linux (since in windows is more easier and there are a thousand of tutorial around internet). I have an AMD RX 580 8GB and it heats up like hell, with a loud noise. I see some applications like corectrl, wattmangtk or radeon profile, but in some point are very difficult to configure

Unfortunately I only have nVidia hardware so I would not be able to actually test any of them, maybe post the question in the Linux4noobs subreddit, I'm sure someone else will have wanted to do the same at one point.

Thanks for the helpful video. Is there any issue using the kernel together with Nvidia GPUs? I have recently found that graphics driver updates do not install correctly since I have the Liquorix kernel. Suddenly, the NVML shared libraries are not found anymore. I am not sure whether or not that is actually related to the kernel...

Granted I have not used the Liquorix kernel for a while since F-Sync was mainlined, but I don't recall any issues using it with my GTX 1080 when I had it.

I went ahead and installed the Kernel on Debian last week. I have not noticed anything much of a performance gain, instead of that i had pretty choppy Gameplay. I later found a benchmark on poronix with the linux 5.x.x Kernel as opposition. Benchmark clearly shows the liqourix kernel lacking greatly (losing around 30 - 70 fps in some titles). So i`m not really keen on it anymore tbh. But that could just be my hardware, i know people who had gains from installing it.

As with anything your millage may vary, I really doubt a drop of 30 - 70 FPS, though, no game would be playable in that case. This kernel is not about FPS, no kernel will magically make you gain FPS, it is about optimising your system resources under heavy load, so if you never stress your system then you will not see an improvement.

Only if VirtualBox does not support that particular kernel, if that happens you need to download and install the Deb package from VirtualBox's website.

Yes it does, because you are forcing your laptop to run at full performance all the time, that is the trade off.

Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.7.0-6.4-liquorix-amd64 (x86_64) Consult /var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/6.30.223.271+bdcom/build/make.log for more information. modprobe: FATAL: Module wl not found in directory /lib/modules/5.7.0-6.4-liquorix-amd64
