Awesome idea. As you said, you could cut groove in it with a rotary tool and then remove it.

A fastener joint which uses a shifter and some multigrips in a demo video for a shear nut! Get the proper tools and maybe also educate yourself further on what stock you actually carry, also they are not welded at all.
