Hi Terri! Thanks very much for the comment, and glad we could introduce you to carpet tiles! If you're interested, you can find a great selection of affordable carpet tiles here: www.builddirect.com/Carpet-Tiles.aspx. Have a great one!
why not start from one side of the room? so you only need to cut tiles on one side of the room. instead of cutting half half tiles all the way around if you start from centre or where they started? Im about to lay tiles in my garage. and it doesnt make sense starting from middle. it means when i go to the edges im cutting tiles. if i start on the left hand side.. they are all full tiles all the way until the right side where i just cut on that side only. i dont understand why you would want to have half cut tiles all the way around the room.
To answer your question simply, almost all rooms in a house or building are not exactly squared. With that said, if you were to start from any side of the room instead of the center, you'd end up with the tiles not lining up before you even reach the center of the room, making it difficult to avoid gaps or seams in your tiles.
45 years carpet installer. Of course you don’t start in the middle. The carpet tiles I Install is commercial grade, so you are not trying to hide seams. You quarter turn each tile. Like in casinos, car dealerships etc. installing plush carpet in tiles is really lame and ugly. However, if a person likes it then go for it
Unless you are going to repaint I wouldn't pull base board off. when you do you are most likely going to peal off a layer of dry wall paper and or a layer of paint. You might be able to cut or score the caulk and paint along the top edge of the base board to prevent this but the base board might be glued as well as nailed to the wall. Rarely have I seen base board removed with out damaging the dry wall or paint job. BE CAREFUL ABOUT THIS!
Really, please tell me more about this business and this magical carpet you installed that looks "brand new" after 20 years in a commercial application, they must leave their shoes outside and never get any dirt on the carpet. Considering the average lifespan of any commercial application is 3 to 10 years you must have some really perfect clients. Kudos to you.
been burned by contractors that over charge and dont do a good job. I really like this product so i can do it myself, but is this advisable for second level/floor of the house where the surface it will be laid on is a wood floor? I'm concerened that on a more flexible surface(i'm not sure if that's the right description to use) on the second floor the edges might peel off wouldn't it?
I am thinking about installing this type of carpet in a couple of bedrooms. How is it when you vacuum the rug? Am I going to have to worry about the rug lifting when I vacuum?
Hi Zimmenator, Thanks for watching and for your question! This should not cause any issues with lifting from vacuuming, so long as you pay close attention to the installation instructions. Some important key factors are 1) ensure that your subfloor is immaculately clean of debris, and flat prior to installing 2) once the tile is installed, use a 100 lb roller over the carpet to fasten and secure the tile down. Hope this helps :)
Why is 12" the minimum tile width needed? If installing over top of a vinyl tile floor, do you have to strip old wax somehow, or anything else for good adhesion? Thanks!
Hi thanks for watching and for reaching out. This really depends on the manufacturer's discretion, however, keep in mind that concrete does sweat so this could weaken the adhesive on the back of the tile. We would encourage using an adhesive with moisture control to ensure the tile stays put. Let us know if we can help with anything else!
BuildDirect; I want to do a long hallway but the hallway is 1in. wider than 2ft. The tile are 1ft. erach . I don't want to cut a 1in. tile to fill in. What can I do?

It's too bad you couldn't spend a minute or so explaining how you handle transitions to other rooms/hallway surfaces that are not carpeted. In the few places toward the end where you pan across a doorway, it looks like you ignored those transitions, and they don't look good. The tiles are great until you have a doorway that you have to extend the carpet into, in order to reach a transition strip to the flooring on the other side of the door. You don't offer any guidance for that.
Hi there, Thanks for your feedback. This video is 10 years old and could definitely do with an update. We’ll be sure to add your suggestion when we create a new one 🙂
Hi Stephen! Thanks for the feedback and for watching. The seams are more visible than usual because those tiles had just been installed. Over time, carpet tile seams should blend together.
Funny how "professionals" always say this about a DIY projects. We have been using carpet tiles in our office building since 2000, they get walked on by hundreds of people 5 days out of every week and they lasted 10 years before they finally looked worn out and were replaced. So tell me again how this stuff is crap.
the guy laying the tiles didn't do a very good job IMHO, i can see a lot of lines. after seeing this, although convenient and easy, i won't be purchasing.
Hi Mike, Thank you for watching and for feedback. We take our followers feedback seriously and appreciate your response and will consider this is any future videos.
