There are dozens of waterproofing products out there and debates on what works best to follow; however, in Jeff's experience, he has had the best results with Schluter systems Kerdi membrane. At the same time, Jeff argues that the waterproofing component of the membrane key, rather than rely on the tile/grout to be the waterproofing factor. Remember that grout is porous and will draw in moisture between the tile. Waterproof it right! At the same time make sure you use the proper cement.

Jeff, you are the man. I have been searching the internet for a solution to uneven drywall after placing furring behind a tub. Saved me so much time. Videos from 2016 still getting the job done. I appreciate you!!

Thanks! I’m an electrician and we’re totally renovating our house and love your videos. With the added bonus you’re in Ontario too! I’ve bought the Schluter membrane to do the bathtub shower after ripping out the old Mirolin one piece. I was in the big box store trying to figure out whether to buy the Kerdi panels or the membrane so went to check out the price of drywall. I may still buy the mould resistant drywall but the associate in the building materials department was pushing me to cement board and to not use drywall, asking if I really wanted to spend the money on the Schluter system because he felt cement board was SOOO much better. I’m glad I trusted my gut because I just found your videos. I’ll pick up the drywall Tuesday when it’s not raining and definitely confirm my tile supplier gave me unmodified thinset. Huge thumbs up my friend!

Hi Geoff, unfortunately the box stores give advice on products based on margin for the store. Best to find a tile supply store in your area and get your advice from the counter sales people. they are trained by the suppliers and know their stuff. Cheers! glad to help

Thank you! you explained why the wall above the new shower insert is sloped. They didn't make the adjustment like you did in the video. Soooo can I still tile it with a small tile? Large tile will show the sloped edge. We primed 3 times with Kilz water & mold resistant primer and then used a good quality paint.

I'm loving your videos. Great work and great information shared. I'm renovating my bathroom and planning to use the schluter waterproofing membrane for the new shower. Can I use that on drywall that is painted? Or do I need to tear out the old drywall and start from scratch? We were going to just add backerboard on top of the drywall, but from your video it looks like we don't need backboard at all. Keep up the good work.

Hi, Jeff! First of all great channel. That's my favourite subscription. I need your opinion. Right now I'm building the bathroom in my house. What do you think which is better dry wall or cement board under the tiles? I'm gonna roll on Red Gard over as underlayment in both cases. What I'm looking is longevity. Is there any benefit of using cement board that worth this extra effort working with it instead of dry wall? And when I'm saying dry wall for the bathroom, I mean 1/2 inch thick moisture resistant dry wall.
@ericrichards1862
@ericrichards1862 3 года назад
Most certified tradesmen would use cement board it has longer lifespan some customers go with drywall with waterproof membrane which if done right still has a decent lifespan and is slightly cheaper, cement board is harder to work with but good for life. The fact he used regular drywall is often frowned upon by certified builders. So if you want longevity then just spend the extra and do it the right way. Any google search now a days would say don’t waste your time with drywall. If you do use drywall make sure you caulk it at the bottom and spend the extra on moisture resistant. make sure you check the caulking and recaulk it if necessary yearly to prevent wicking especially in his style application.

What you did was show me how to drywall *any* wall, and how to cut out holes that I would normally do in any room. What I would like to know is how do the drywall and the tub specifically come together? At the back walls of the tub is a flange/lip to screw the tub in. Does the drywall go over the lip, behind the lip, match up with the lip, etc? Does the drywall meet up with the top of the flange/lip, or go down over it? I did get a quick shot at 5:03, it looks like you made the drywall match the top of the lip, then filled in the gap with calking?

Jeff, I kept having an issue with my home's exterior osb sheathing warping. After the second contractor installed new osb and Tyvek, I took a peak and could view both the fiberglass shell of the stand up shower and the tub next to it! No vapor barrier and no insulation! The contractor or plumber had installed both to the studs, then installed sheet rock above both. Now I know why the outer osb is warping! My question now: what is the best way to install the proper installation from the exterior of the house once I again have a contractor remove the warped osb for the third time. I understand that this isn't ideal, but the house is only 5 years old, and I really don't want to rip the tub or separated shower, and drywall, out. Thank you.

Hi Jeff, thank you so much for having your videos online. They have helped me very much. I have a question. What should I use for my shower ceiling Drywall or Hardie backer board. I don't plan to tile the ceiling just paint over it with white water resistant paint. I do plan to tile the walls of the shower to were it meets the ceiling. Will the Drywall or Hardie backer board be good for the shower ceiling and be painted over. The shower will be in closed with a shower door I also plan to cut out a whole in the middle of the ceiling to attach a vent that leads to the attack and to the outside wall in the attack for some ventilation. The ceiling Measures 3 feet 5 inches x 2 feet 8 inches. It has plaster with wire mesh currently that I plan to take out. What do you recomend ? Thank you so much Lazaro

Question this about the water barrier you create, are you trying to prevent the building framing from deterioration or are you trying to preserve, for as long as possible, the usefulness of the current installation. I have found that keeping the tile adherent to the wall for the longest amount of time will prove most beneficial against both affects. Home RenoVision DIY has some really good pointer in this video that are aside from the purpose of the title. It is all go in go on install for anyone to perform this way. It will last for years that is for sure; but, if it is your personal property and your not wanting to do it again; is this the way you would do it?

@@labrigful Consider what if there is a leak from above or behind - so water gets at the REAR of the drywall - massive failure. Using drywall of any type for shower walls is lazy and irresponsible. Many areas do not permit it - for good reason.
@jkling1717

@Mr.Anonymous What?! You are totally wrong. Dude - do your research! Cement boards DO NOT fall apart when exposed to water. Same goes for any proper backer board such as Wedi, GoBoard, etc. Put down the Schluter kool-aid. It is easy to build a 100% waterproof shower for far less than Schluter - with PROPER waterproofing like Mapei Aqua Defense or Laticrete Hydroban, etc. Never use materials in showers that inherently wick moisture or are subject to failure from potential leaks.

which size green board is best for the ceiling in a bathroom. 1/2", or 5/8? Does it make a difference?

...are you breaking the paper on the drywall with your screws???
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
No Dee, I did not, but that brings up an interesting point. If you need help with the depth of your finished screw you can use a dimpler bit designed for drywall installation. They are however very useless in the corners so that is why I don't use them.

really , nice cracks. couldn't get it any tighter? you should always try eliminating joints or crack. should stand both ends in one piece. you should have used a water proof board in the whole enclosure. there's aboard called Denshield, it's water proof. We had a piece of Denshield lying in the back of my brothers truck , completely submerged in water for about a week. We took it out and broke it in two. It was bone dry. Alot of tile installers use it around where I live, here in Washington.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 6 лет назад
Hey Douglas thanks for the suggestion. I have tried everything in my career. The truth is that using a water and vapor barrier behind the tile is the only way to get a great result long term. Denshield has its negative side as well. You don't need waterproof drywall when it is behind a waterproof membrane, that would be like wearing a wetsuit on a submarine.

I paid someone to do my shower and floors. This guy used drywall on a 17” x 9’ area in the shower now I’m trying to correct it because the shower exterior wall was wet and getting moldy and ugly at the bottom. I thought my kids were getting water on the floor. It would happen every now and then more frequently. I used to do dry wall, I open the wall and what do I find no cement board but drywall wtf 😳 I don’t do tile but know better than that. No Redgard will work on that how do I know because I can see the redgard at the seems. Now 10 percent of the shower is shit the same 10 percent he cheated out on. Now I will not call him out lesson learned let someone who has the time sue his ass. It lasted about 8 years if anyone cares to know. It’s not about the money it’s about time. Wasted. Could have did it right once. I would have paid him extra for the materials and for him doing it right is the problem. Don’t follow this video I work in remodels that’s how I know this is the wrong way. That’s how I know this dude fd up. He wasn’t the lowest guy either I need it done to move in and he happened to be in the tile section looking for work asked if we needed work said no and gods will ran into him at Panda Express. Let him do the job regretting it.

I think the idea you must use cement board is a load of crap. I seen plenty of old homes with tiled shower walls over plaster board with no issues. I am talking about houses built in the 50's.

Sigh ... Just Terrible Advice! NEVER use drywall for shower walls. A leak from above or behind will destroy drywall very quickly, and ruin an expensive shower. Always use a PROPER BACKERBOARD, that will not fall apart when subjected to water. Preferably a foam backerboard like USG or GoBoard - they are inherently waterproof, light and easy to cut.
