Installed a pertronix ignition kit and adjusted timing on my Super A. 12V negative ground with distributor ignition using a internally (3 Ohm) resisted coil. Pertronix ignitor kit #1442 (4 cyl IHC neg ground 12V).

Timing is set with the engine off before you start the engine. If you do it like you're doing you'll likely be advanced too much. Makes nice holes in the pistons.

Move the distributor after you loosen those bolts. But I'm not sure what to move in the distributor? Please enlighten more

My tractor's been sitting in the barn for two years because I can't seem to 1) find the time to fiddle with it and 2) getting the points adjusted to the right gap just seems to elude me somehow. I've ordered one of these kits and if it works you've got a free dinner any time you come to south central Pa. :)

+Erick Lukhele I believe your car has the 250 chevrolet 6 cylinder (?) Im from the US, but assume the ignition and distributor id the same for your South African variant as the US 250. Great video I too bought the 12-volt negative ground. How do I know if the alternator was converted to the 12-negative ground? I suspect maybe its an issue with the PTO safety switch might be flakey...

Darus_ Assuming the prior owner made the conversion, first if it has an alternator it’s a 12v neg ground. Generators are 6v pos ground. 6 v batteries have 3 water caps 12 v have 6. If it’s a positive ground system check the battery posts. Is the + post connected to the starter or the battery box or other body part (ground).

What model ignitor was that? Im putting a 1142 on my C and it looks a lot different and I think it was put together wrong for it will not fit.

You have the wrong model. On a C you should have distributor with body stamp 353898-R1. The kits numbers for your tractor are: Ignitor 6V Negative Ground 1442N6 Ignitor 12V Negative Ground 1442 Ignitor 6V Positive Ground 1442P6 Ignitor 12V Positive Ground 1442P12 Ignitor 2 91442

I miss typed that. It is a 1442. What model did you use? I think on my ignitor they riveted the sensor on the wrong side of the plate which causes the hole nit to line up

Ty Minton I used the regular 1442 (12V neg ground) since mine is converted from 6 V positive ground with generator to 12V negative ground with alternator. Sometimes I have seen different distributors on IH letter series than the IH factory ones and that could be your hang up. Make sure and check the body casting numbers on the distributor body match the ones from the CIH website (partstore.caseih.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::model_find) I found removing the sensor from the mounting plate and mounting the plate without the sensor allowed the screw holes in the distributor body to be aligned since the sensor was in the way when trying to install it with the sensor attached. After mounting the plate then I attached the sensor with the locknuts and it was no problem.

If this engine is a flat head design it will still foul the plugs despite the upgrade to electronic ignition.

I concur that fouled plug(s) can arise from more than just ignition system problems. However, fouled plugs were not the problem I was wishing to address for this tractor. Cold weather starts were. Removal of the condenser/points and installation of electronic ignition has given me 100% starts in cold weather for two years.

Is this all that is needed to convert it to 12volts? Other than a alternator

You don't need to switch anything but the battery, alternator, and put a ballast resistor inline with the coil to convert to 12V. The starter and mechanical distributor (points and condenser) will still work. But... it is a good idea to switch to a high resistance coil and electronic ignition if you are doing a 6 to 12 V conversion.

No. It's been converted to 12v. Petronix make 6v with different part number.

Hi, #1 piston is in the rear of the engine right? #2 in front ?

Number 1 is the piston/plug closest to the front of engine (closest to radiator). It goes piston number 1-2-3-4 from front of block to back of block. The 1-3-4-2 stamped on the side of the block is the firing order for the engine. When the #1 piston is at top dead center(TDC) the distributor is firing cylinder #1. The next wire (the distributor turns clockwise) on the distributor has to connect to cylinder 3, then 4, and finally 2. Therefore, to time the motor correctly remove the number one spark plug (front of tractor), turn the engine over slowly until you reach top dead center(TDC) for number one cylinder, and turn the distributor until the #1 wire on the distributor cap is aligned with the distributor rotor. Remember that the distributor rotor turns clockwise. There is also a faint mark on the flywheel that you can view from the bottom of the tractor through the inspection hole that has a line and "DC" stamped on it that will be pointing directly down at TDC. It can be worn off or really faint so usually TDC is best found with a bent wire inserted into the spark plug hole for cylinder 1 and turn the motor until the wire is at the top of the cylinder travel.
