Today I'm showing you an easy way of replacing the front shocks, springs, and installing a lift kit on my 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road without spring compressors, just using a standard floor jack. I'll be installing the Bilstein 5100 Front Shocks along with Old Man EMU (OME) 887 2" Lift Springs.
The same process can be used on most other toyota trucks including the 2nd Gen Tacoma (All 2005+ Tacomas), FJ Cruisers, 4Runners and Tundras.

I watched a few other videos where they almost disassembled the entire front of the truck, spring compressors and all that. I followed your video and it went exactly as you demonstrated! Thanks for taking the time to put this video together! I'll add that Bilstein provides the rubber spacers for their rear shocks but for some reason they are not included with the front shocks. So if you spacers are dried up, cracked or missing you might want to get those before starting the job.

I first tried disassembling the entire front truck (exagerating) and using the spring compressor like every other video shows. That was a waste of time, the spring compressor didn't fit inside the stock bilstein and spring set up. Luckily I found this video, it worked like a charm. I installed a set of 5100s with eibach coil and had no problems at all following this method.

@GearheadJT
@GearheadJT 4 года назад
It would be the same process, essentially by using the control arm and floor jack to decompress and compress the spring up and down. I'm also looking at potentially upgrading to the 6112 in the future. Essentially the 6112 is a beefier shock with a larger piston. In My Opinion: 5100 is a great shock for a daily driver that occasionally goes offroad, 6112 is made for more of the heavier duty offroad rig which will perform a lot better offroad and will still do great on the street.

Really neat method to avoid having to use a spring compressor! What notch did you have the 5100’s set at with the Stock Coils, and how would you say it affected the ride quality when you switched to the 887’s? I run 5100s with stock coils on the 4th notch and a 1” rear block. Contemplating using this method to swap them for the 887’s.
@WolfPackM98c
@WolfPackM98c 2 года назад
If you’re installing heavier springs, this method won’t work. I tried this with OME 350# springs and the whole truck came off the jack and jack stands and the spring still wasnt compressed enough to thread the top bolt. Ended up having to take them in to a shop to have the springs switched out. FWIW, lots of shops will swap your springs for $20-$40 and have a quick turn around time. You still save hundreds doing it yourself and don’t risk disfiguring or killing yourself in the process.
@jsaeteun
@jsaeteun Год назад
Which coils did u try fitting onto the truck? I was thinking of installing the ome 886 using this method, they are heavier springs but not by much. I do have a winch and bumper that weighs the truck down more, so I'm hoping I'll be okay.

I had that exact same issue over the weekend. Reinstalled stock gear and am having a shop do it soon
@j.e.guerrero5838
@j.e.guerrero5838 3 года назад
Hi. I have the exact setup as you before the OME upgrade that you did. I’m not sure why do I need a OME springs? It is because the lift is in the springs not on the struts? Do you get a stiffer ride? When I first installed my set of 5100 I went to the fourth ring to get 1.55 inches of lift, and ended up lowering to the third ring to get just 1 inch of lift because on the fourth ring the ride was very stiff. I don’t know if is super necessary to install a set of springs with the 5100’s 🤔
@The5k13r
@The5k13r 4 года назад
Great video, I used it to install the same setup. Did you end up with the advertised 2.5" of lift from the old man emus? I did before and after measurements and only got 1.75" passenger side and 1.5" driver. I've bought the toytec 1/4" spacer to correct that difference but I'm also considering knocking my 5100s up to the first notch despite what everyone says....

Hi, I’m currently in the process of install my lift kit for my Tacoma except i have the 888. How did you go about reinstalling the two lower control arm bolts that connects to the wheel hub? There’s about a 2 inch gap for mine and I’m having a difficult time connecting the two since the strut is longer. Seems as though you were able to reinstall those bolts with no issues.

Put a jack under the lower control arm and jack it up to decompress the strut assembly, this will allow you to put the bolts in.

Hi, what is the best setting if i want to achieve a 2.5" lift using bilstein 5100 and the OME 2" lift coil spring and install a steel bumper and a winch? Thank you

what did you end up going with?

I know this is for a Tacoma but can you do this with a First gen Tundra with the same set up (5100 and 2887 OME) ?

Yes, should be the same, however the spring rates might be higher so you might need to use spring compressors.

Hey man, great video. I’m using this method to install the same setup, bilstein 5100 on lowest setting and OME 887 coils. Double checked everything is set up correctly. No matter how much I jack up the control arm with the shock and spring in place I cannot get the spring to compress enough to allow the new shock to feed through the mount. It just lifts the entire truck. Have you heard of this issue? Idk if the 887 spring is just too stiff or if I’m doing something wrong.

What ended up being the issue?

@@usa45v26 i think the coil was just too stiff neing brand new and having more spring rate than OEM bc I was using a medium load coil. I ended up just getting some compressors and tensioning the coils until they fit and installing it the traditional way.
