This video shows how-to lower the front of your Harley using the Progressive Suspension "drop in" fork lowering kit. Bike shown is my 99 Softail dubbed project Slamtail. Any questions or concerns feel free to comment. Thanks for watching.
Link to kit that was installed in this video: amzn.to/3ecI9Sd
And just for confusion purposes: the kit calls to drop in the main spring, the compensator spring, a washer, pvc spacer and another washer. From experience, I prefer to drop in the main spring, a washer, the pvc spacer, another washer and then the compensator spring . It doesn't matter which way you chose, the compensator spring compresses fully under bike weight in either position. I find my method easier to install and keeps both springs from chaffing on each other.

Thanks for the tutorial! It helped me immensely, as I just installed a Progressive Monotube Fork Cartridge Kit, in My '05 Fatboy. Your video helped Hugely! And what a difference in handling too! Although... While bleeding the oil out, I did feel dirty, almost like I was jerking it off... :p

The torque specifications for the axles are critical. Getting it "shade tree tight" is not good enough. The bearings rely on proper torque to function properly and safely.

You didn't mention if you changed the kickstand, and if so, how? I was under the impression, if both front and rear were lowered, it was necessary. Thanks for the video as I will be doing this soon
@WeakestofWeeks
@WeakestofWeeks 8 лет назад
I didn't change the kickstand, it's still the original. When I park my softail, I normally air out the rear air ride, which drops the bikes center of gravity low enough to where it won't topple over, even in the biggest gusts of wind. Now if you lowered the rear with just the typical 1-2" lowering bolts, than you may want a 1" lower kick stand. Honestly, even then I don't think you would need a lowered kick stand but if you're worried, they're easy to swap. Just lift the bike up, remove the 3 or 4 bolts, and attach the new stand and reattach bolts. It's really that easy!
@larrypeterson526
@larrypeterson526 8 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, I know it's an easy swap, but wondered if it was really necessary. I plan to lower both the front and back 2". I never pack anyone so I think I can get away with a full 2" . Can't afford the air ride, so I'll have to be happy with what I can afford. Later man, and thanks again

I see your comments about a year old hopefully you figured it out by now but if not I'll drop this line. Check your neck bearings, it's very common for them to be loose and or worn on older bikes. The good news is it's an easy fix.

The Progressive "drop in" kit doesn't require disassembly of the front end or draining the fork oil.....hence the name "drop in". Is this Progressives standard lowering kit?

Hey quick question. When you changed your rear wheel from 16 to 18" . Did you notice a drop of your rpms let's say around 60 to 70 mph?
@WeakestofWeeks
@WeakestofWeeks 5 лет назад
Nothing noticeable. I used the original belt pulley on the rear and even though the rim size went from a 16" to 18" I kept a similar tire circumference. Think of it as a donut and the center hole has been enlarged, but the outside has remained the same.

ill be installing these in the next couple weeks. Isn't the whole point of this kit being "drop in" to avoid taking the whole front off the bike? I am assuming you took yours apart to change the fork oil? How much oil do you recommend putting in each fork? is each bike different i am definitely going to change my fork oil, that oil has probably been there since 92' lol @ILikeITBlown
@WeakestofWeeks
@WeakestofWeeks 8 лет назад
Kit is somewhat deceiving by being called drop in. It drops in alright, but only after u tear the entire front end apart on some models like shown. Fortunately, Harley forks are rugged and unlike an inverted fork set up, u really don't have to worry about them leaking. Although, suspension performance is certainly effected by old/dirty oil. So do yourself a favor and change ur fork oil! On many models each fork takes 1 pint of oil, which is just half a quart. Double check dependant on what model u have as I am not sure about dressor models if that's what u have.
@SpeediiEddie
@SpeediiEddie 8 лет назад
+ILikeITblown My bikes manual calls for #10 fork oil. I am guessing 10wt? What heavier weight would you recommend something not too heavy and something not #10 light? I hear A lot guys have changed over to a heavier weight and end up not liking the stiffness over the softness of the lighter fork oil.
@WeakestofWeeks
@WeakestofWeeks 8 лет назад
+Eddie Maester What your manual calls for is probably a 10wt oil which is what Harley considers there type E fork oil. If you go with a heavier weight like I did, then it will probably be too firm for your liking. If I was in your position I would go with Amsoils shock therapy medium #10 oil. It's still a 10wt oil, but its going to be a better performing oil without the risk of going too heavy. I've ran Amsoil for years in my Buells and couldn't be happier with the results. Check them out www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/other-products/suspension-fluid/shock-therapy-suspension-fluid-10-medium/

Curious: Why cant one just loosen the top caps to allow draining...remove the drain bolts and drain the forks, then remove the internal springs and add new fork oil then add the new internals and tighten the top caps. I am suggesting not removing the forks and wheel and caliper from the bike.. just a question really..yes I know it could get messy so go slow and easy.
@brewstar007
@brewstar007 5 лет назад
The top cap your referring to threads in to another threaded cap that screws in to the fork. The fork must be removed to gain access to this second fork cap because it's captured inside the top triple tree.
@xlrider1565
@xlrider1565 Месяц назад
With these 41mm forks, removing the fork cap nut at the top only holds the forks all the way up in the triple trees. You still need to remove the fork spring cap to gain access to the fork springs. That fork cap nut at the very top, screws into the fork spring cap nut, directly below it. I have an '05 Wide Glide with these exact same forks, and had to remove both fork legs to install the lowering kit. I went for the 1.5" drop.

No need to buy a lowering kit. All you need to do is saw off an inch or two inches from your pvc plastic spacer (however much you want forks lowered). Not sure what his reason was to change one of the springs You can also avoid taking to top tree caps bolts and pinch bolts off by simply loosening lower fork tree and using a pipe wrench with a rag wrapped around fork to turn it counter clockwise and unscrew it and replace the same way
