I can't believe 157 people gave this video a thumbs down. I was a cabinet maker/installer/finish carpenter for almost 40 years and what I love about this Kid is his knowledge and he introduces me to all the new tools to the market although I will stick with my Masonite saw guide made out of scrap with a battery skill saw verses the Festool it works just as good. Festool is EXPENSIVE!

I'm a DIYer and figured out how to do it pretty much the same way he did. The only difference is I had subtreads and screwed up into all the treads from below, then screwed the bottom of the risers into the treads. Solid as hell now. One hint: Cut one side of the tread at a sharper angle about 2" behind the nosing. This wont be visible later and it makes laying the tread down so much easier. I also cut the risers and treads a hair longer to make it a tighter fit.

My staircase is a back/forth with a skirtboards on one side only, but I learned a lot of great tricks here. This video gave me the confidence to finally tackle my project. I am also doing it on previously carpeted stairs, and here I learned to remove all the old plywood and fasten everything directly to the risers.

About substituting tools for trade skills.... One of the best skills in the trades is knowing the right tool to use and using the best quality tool for the specific job at hand. The best Carpenters, and other Tradesmen and Women will spend the time and money to buy the best quality tools, knowing those tools will work better, provide a better finished product and be faster and more efficient. The quality of the finished product is worth it. The adage of "caulk and paint...." should never apply to a Craftsman... You're stairs are beautiful Spencer! Great video! I find myself doing retreads where I live. Typically the side stingers are spruce and have a bad warp. I usually have a sacrificial board that is a few inches shorter than the tread. I scribe the left and right side, measure the space in between and trace it into the actual tread. Absolutly use the track saw though! Just some grinding afterward... makita over here too, not the fez. Your bit about less steps is spot on though! Keep the videos coming. Best content I've found!

Your system is definitely a timesaver and they look great.I will be implementing your process into my businiess! I like the wedge. We typically put riser on top of the tread so we can move the tread forward or back to keep the nose the same consistency. Most stringers are installed and cut terribly we have to shim and play a lot of games to get a nice product. Thank you very much for this video.

You are the only other guy I have ever saw screw the stringer to skirt board .A plus to that also, screw your skirt board to the wall first in as many place as you can that will not be seen. I do cut my treads with a small back bevel you will never notice it on the front. One other think i do is i level all my treads from front to back i use a screw as a leveling leg only at the back and tread will set on riser at the front . And yes the glue is the trick. Just some things i have picked up over the last 30 yrs I still watch to learn stuff too Great job sir
