I'm no expert, but every lattice brand I looked at said to drill oversize holes and use screws for hanging the lattice. This allows for expansion without cracking. I just replaced my old lattice that the previous owner just nailed up and it was cracked in many places.
Yes, my understanding also. You need special screws with over size holes. Also need matching divider strips where pieces butt together, and end strips where lattice stops, all to deal with expansion and contraction. I don't see any of this...?
The dividers and end caps make for a very professional look in my opinion. The trick is leaving a quarter inch between the lattice and the bottom of the divider channels (we figured a way but hard to explain). Also, if going the divider route, the lattice is only hung from the top. Again, this is all about expansion and cracking
Thanks! very helpful! But for a super novice like me, it would have been good to see how you installed the 2.x4 and frames into the deck that you attached the lattice to. I'll figure it out though!
Great video. You explained everything in a way I was able to understand. I will refer to this video and recommend it to my friends and family. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I have potted poles 4 x 4 for outdoor lights. I want to run a sheet of latice from one pole to another, 8 feet apart. There is no top or bottom support unless I build it. Do you think this can be done?
Never nail vinyl lattice. It has absolutely 100% got to be able to move with expansion and contraction. It will crack and break if it cant move.Huge, huge mistake.
So true. I watched a video like this last year when I installed ours. It's ALL broken now, 9 months later. :// Now I'm back on YT looking for the right way to do it. Sad there are so many videos giving bad advice on this subject!
Can you explain more about the mesh screen under the deck surface? For keeping out bugs once you enclosed the top section, so that the room is fully secured? Great idea.
The sun has probably caused that to crack. You can fasten plastic lattice without it being able to move. I’m dealing with this now on a three year old install. The sun cooked it and it didn’t have flexibility.
Can you explain this a little? I'm about to do this to my deck, but have no experience in doing so. Should you not be using all the 2x4 to keep it in place?
@@zacharywill1783 from what I understand there is a pvc trim channel that the lattace sits in and the walls of the channel are more than 1/4" to allow for expansion
Wrong. You left zero room for expansion..looks good now..come next year it'll be bowed out and look like crap this is why i don't hire diy handica..men. also supports should be every 2 feet.
The video was literally “how to” install lattice, not watch an installed lattice and someone telling you what to do. If anyone already has the skills, they aren’t the ones who needs this video.
