In this video I walk you through the steps of replacing struts on a 1998 Chrysler Town and Country. The operation is fairly typical when replacing struts. I cover some of the issues you might run into, as well as some things you might want to avoid when installing struts on your vehicle.
Monroe also recommends replacing other suspension components like ball joints and control arm bushings when you replace your struts to avoid issues with noise or loss of vehicle control.
Be sure to check out these other videos from Monroe on inspecting your suspension and struts.

I really hate all the comments about "He sounds like he's doing a commercial" That T&C is part of his Fixing it Forward. He does a lot for very little. Not to mention how many thousands of people have been helped by his videos. If anyone deserves the right, or has earned the right to do sponsored videos, it's him. Not to mention his Tool Reviews are often extremely fair, even when they are given to him for free as a product review. I truly don't believe Eric would be endorsing a product he thought wasn't a strong product or part of a good company. If Monroe is one of the few companies willing to support ETCG on RU-vid as a medium, then I for one am pleased with Monroe for their willingness to step beyond TV or Print, and move into more modern applications.

Hey Eric, something that works AMAZING on rusted bolts is a 50-50 mix of ATF to straight acetone. It's pretty cheap and works better than almost all products off the shelf. I think you should make a video of you mixing some and trying it out. I think you'll like it. Love the channel!

Hey Eric! I'd like to say thanks for all of the knowledge you have passed onto me over the months of watching your videos, it is worth gold! I'm not a mechanic or even close to it hence why I watch your videos. I have noticed when doing those stabilizer nuts if you get a pry bar while it's partially loosened and pried underneath the nut against the strut it will come loose with a ratchet. Keep making more videos !!

Hey Eric quick tip something I use for sway bar links up here in good old Canada, I take a wire wheel on a drill to them, then lube em up then impact away for the extra 20 seconds of cleaning the rust off 99% the time comes off no problem Love your vids keep up the good work Cheers

A Magnetic Induction Heater made all the difference in the world for me. I have snapped bolts with these impact guns. I am just a home mechanic fixing my own vehicles. The heater cost about $250, but it paid for itself the first time. I had several rusty bolts that wouldn't come lose with penetrating oils and impact guns. After 20 seconds with the heater the nut came right off. It almost feels magical. Suspension parts are the worst.

Agreed, love my Venom HP. One of the most useful tools I have ever purchased. Never realized it until after I tried it. Now, I rarely reach for my torches anymore, since the Venom handles the job easily and much more safely. But it is pricey, I paid about double what you did. But worth every penny to me!

Seeing a 3rd gen Chrysler minivan without strut tower rot is very rare. With most of them there's nothing left of the top of the tower where the top of the strut mounts. The Chrysler factory fix (subdued recall only if you complained) was a joke using a plate "glued" over the rust. I ended up welding in all new fabricated towers before new struts.

The stabilizer link ball joints are bad with this one... such a cheap part to replace too. If you don't have a buddy, lower the vehicle (1-2 feet off the ground), set the new quickstrut on the knuckle, and use a floor jack under the wheel assemble to gently push and hold the quickstrut in place. Works like a charm.

Eric i find a magnet camber level is very hand when replace that type of strut, you take a reading before you disassemble them zero it out then when you reinstall the new struts just set them to zero, you can purchase one on eBay cheap.

I have the same sway bar links but I just jack up the car and remove the wheels then jack the wheel knuckle up so that puts a load on the sway bar, then just impact it out. The slot where the links go to will act like a vice grip and lock it from rotating.

I've got a Kia Spectra with 170,000 miles and the suspension is all original, the springs and struts were never replaced. They still seem in amazing condition too, they're not leaking and they don't bounce all over the place. Is that unheard of? I had never had a car's struts/shocks last that long before. For all the flak I got for buying a Kia, it sure did treat me right over the past decade.

You should align the front end after every change made to the front end of a vehicle! Even just new struts without cam bolts or slotted holes can still change the angle the tires sit on the road just enough to make the toe readings off. Never MAYBE its ALWAYS!

TIP: On Nissans and Chryslers, Bungee cord the axel so it doesn't pull the inner joint out!!!Around the brake rotor is fine. If it pops out,you will have a bad day. Final torquing of the nuts and bolts are seldom necessary on strut replacements by waiting until the weight of the vehicle is supported. It IS important when doing control arm bushings! if you tighten the bolts B-4 you lower it down,the bushing will rip out/rotate and ruin the bushings.

I don't even mess with the bolts on the linkages. After smacking my thumb and almost losing the nail from the wrench slipping as I hit it with an impact, I just use an angle grinder. Grind it off on both ends, spray it with some black paint where I hit the sway bar, let it dry and put on new linkages.

I thought that Monroe always suggested tightening the bottom bolts First....Then the top 3 nuts were last to tighten after the tire is back on and lowered to the ground...I guess it is to lessen the chance of damaging the strut mount bearing and stem also....Im doing mine tomorrow on my 07 Buick Lucerne

dainternetguru Dont be so picky, when you have 20 + years experience you tend to notice if the stuff you bolted on has fallen off, it is feel and finesse. I am not saying torque specs are not important, especially so in some places, but experience does teach you how to guesstimate.

On a job like this I agree with Eric top bolts are about 20-30 pounds witch he's doing by hand 2 pinch bolts about 75-100(but as seen in the vid he slams em on with a impact BUT his impact isn't super strong 99.9% sure if he slapped a torque wrench on it might be 125-140 also petty much every alignment shop will align camber the exact way loosen em with a impact and tighten with a impact

Harold Karrington Well it's good to know that your engine will run right but your suspension and steering might not be 100%. I'd rather have a car that turns and stops like new with an engine that's not perfect. Engine important yes... suspension & steering, that's truly critical stuff.

I replaced the struts on a 2000 Camry. They went in easy and I like the ride better than the stock ride. They are a little firmer. I do have a squeaking problem with the front struts though. Sounds like it is coming from the bearing at the top of the struts. Both sides equally. Pretty minor in summer, can't hear it with the windows down or the radio on, but louder in winter when the road salt gets up there.

@MonroeSuspension
@MonroeSuspension 9 лет назад
Tim Johnson Tim, Here are the steps of disposal below. 1) Underground tanks with a capacity greater than 110 gallons used to store waste oil are subject to existing U.S. EPA regulations for underground storage tanks. The regulations include leak detection, corrosion protection, and spill/overfill requirements. 2. Do not mix oil drained from scrap units with used motor oil orany other wastes. 3. If there is a spill or release of used oil to the environment,stop the release and contain the oil. Clean up and manage oilspill residues properly. 4. Used oil must be transported by a licensed waste oil haulerto a reputable oil recycler. The waste oil hauler and the oilrecycler must each have a U.S. EPA identification number. 5. To find a used oil recycler in your area, contact the NationalOil Recyclers Association. To check the status of your statesused oil program, contact your state’s used oil program office.
