Ro 23 20 cam some guys rotate the crank so the piston is at TDC on the cylinder they’re working, on but I just used the air and didn’t rotate the crank, the valves are going to be closed anyways since the rocker shafts and pushrods are out.

Lowbuck LS yeah I kinda figured w the air you wouldn’t have to .....I was just going to make sure .....I got the ls6+ beehive springs coming in sat I already have a compression tester I’m going to use instead

@@amordewesoI installed my new LS6+ springs last night. I have a Summit truck cam in my 5.3. I used the TDC method. Two cylinders are up at the same time on ls engines. Normally one would be on the exhaust stroke but the rockers are off so it doesn't matter. You can do 1 and 6, rotate crank 90 degrees, then 8 and 5, 7 and 4, then 2 and 3. I wrote it on a piece of paper like this so it's easier to see: 1872 6543 You can do the two cylinders that line up vertically. I used a pencil to stick in the spark plug hole to verify the piston was up. I had one valve slide down and touch the top of the piston, it's easy to slide back up. The valves can't go anywhere with the piston up. I modified my compression tester to put air into the cylinders as a back up, but every time I put the air to a cylinder it would force the piston down. I started at 70 psi, worked all the way down to 20 psi. It would force the cylinder I had at TDC down to the bottom. Just wanted to share that info if someone is doing springs for the first time.

I put a different camshaft in and the stock valve springs didn’t allow me to get the full RPM range of the new cam, stock springs didn’t have enough tension. These ones allow me to take full benefit of the new camshaft

Some manufactures of springs list there spring rate differently. I had the same question when looking at stock ls6 springs at 375lb spring rate vs BTR ls6 spring at 285lb spring rate. How could they have such different rates and offer the same lift? It ended up being that the BTR springs listed open pressure at max lift .550 as the spring rate. I ended up using the LS6+ comp springs. The seat pressure for all three of these ls6 type springs is about 90lbs installed at 1.800. The open pressure is listed as 285lbs. but that's at max lift, since my cam only has .500 lift, the open spring pressure will be lower. Pac1219 springs have an open pressure of 348lbs (@.625 lift)and a seat pressure of 135lbs vs. 285lbs open pressure and 90lb. with ls6 type springs. GMPP LS6 springs are listed as 375lb spring rate, Comp at 385lb, and summit ls6 springs at 375lb. Spring rate isn't the number to look at, open pressure and seat pressure need to be as low as possible and support the lift you're running. Higher seat pressure is harder on the valvetrain as a whole. The 8712 summit truck cam only has .500 lift, did you use those high load springs because of the roller Rockers? The 1.8 ratio puts the lift up to .529. I know you are supposed to add some to your spring rate if you run them because of the weight. Normally less than .550 lift truck cams use Ls6 type springs to match cam profile. Overall I love my summit truck cam, it lopes great for a small cam, and runs even better. I researched springs for months trying to learn how to pick the right springs for safe maximum gain.

@@Mattvardaman. I did consider that with the stainless steel roller rockers when buying the pac springs. The weight of the rockers when engine is running puts extra momentum on the on the roller rockers. Ya. I didn’t figure in the 500lift to the maxlift of the springs. That’s a good point you make. But I knew I’d be safe from valve float because of the seat pressure and the springrate. I probably overspringed my setup a little like 90lbs shy for max lift height. It runs solid and does have a little lope chop and surge is like 150rpms. A bonus. Lol. Thanks

Yes you still need to turn each piston to TDC, I may not have shown that in the video, it's been a while since I did this

Smith Tuning thanks sir, yeah it’s definitely worth spending a little extra money on certain tools. I have been happy with some of the tools I’ve bought at Canadian Tire like their “Maximum” line of wrenches but definitely should have spent more money on the EZ outs. And should have used a vacuum like you said, lesson learned.

You could but you won’t see much benefit from them with the stock camshaft, they’re not really needed until you install a cam with higher lift than the stock cam

Yes it will work on a 6.0L just fine

50 PSI worked for me but it wouldn't hurt to go higher, a pancake compressor should work fine, it doesn't need to supply much volume.
