HOW TO VIDEO: Valve springs are one of the most critical, and most often overlooked, components in your racing engine. The incorrect selection of the racing valve springs is one of the leading causes of engine failure. In addition, many racers suffer failure due to the incorrect installation and improper handling of the valve springs. Watch Brian Tooley show you how to properly change the valve springs while the engine is still in your car.

"Hide the hammer from yourself" Man you got that shit right! I've botched a seal or two that way. I'm like lightning with a hammer. Never strike the same place twice

How much psi can you give the cylinder, I see you just hooked the air line up. But do you have to turn the regulator on the compressor down?
@fasnuf
@fasnuf 5 лет назад
Just a guess here, but typically a car is around 120 psi when doing a compression check. That'll be a good start.

I bought the cam kit with springs from BTR and just got it installed. I didn’t press down my valve stems but they set right in place like the stock ones. My oil pressure is lower now without the tune but I’ve heard a tune will fix it. If not would that likely be the cause of my pressure issue? Just wondering what others think this is my first project. Thanks!

With a ls2 na stage 2 cam kit, what is the life expectancy of the valve springs? ( street car) are there symptoms of them wearing? Much appreciated, and awesome tutorial videos.

When you press them are they is their room between the seal and the washer u put on the bottom or does it sit all the way onto the washer ...

Hide the hammer! Good one! I try to not contact the engine parts with a hammer anyway, put something in-between, (and not to fingers) I hit the valve stem a few times like that, I started using a socket on the retainers!

Hi, I’m looking for a valve spring compressor tool like the one is this video, that will work on a 2004 4.3L Chevy Vortec engine. I’m replacing the valve springs to fix a misfire issue. The engine is in the vehicle. My internet searches have all ended up with valve spring compressors for LS engines. I have bought two different brands of the “jaw” type compressors but they keep popping off the valve springs. I’m begging for help.

It being a 4.3 that's the same as a sbc gen1 style. Theres hundreds of different ways people change those. I changed the springs on my 400 SBC I use to race but while I was in college it sat alot and some of the springs on opened valves got weak. I just used the air to keep valves up and used the valve spring compressor tool to hold down the spring. u bolt it to rocker stud and press down enough to get locks keepers out. It was on a s10 blazer I had it in. Hope the best for u.

What is another method to keep the valves from falling. I dont have an air compressor, i heard of the TDC method but havent found videos that do them.
@Owens_Racing
@Owens_Racing 6 лет назад
KASOR8281 here is a link. What I don’t like about this method is pushing up in the valve with the piston you are pushing of the edge of the valve. Myself wouldn’t want to do that. I picture bent valves. Even slightly is failure. Learn to find TDC from watching the push rods and you can feel and hear the compression stroke on the cylinder you’re working with. Ensure using something to go inside plug hole. Then I would use the air. This way is something stupid happens with your compressor or hose or fittings. Your valves don’t drop into the cylinder. Which means heads come off. Here is that link but I don’t recommend it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t1WYC84eeMU.html

When you press down on the seal should it bottom out on the top end of the guide or should there be a bit or room?

Nice video. However, I would NEVER hammer on a valvespring like you did at the beginning. Then you say the first thing you want to do is hide the hammer!!! I don't care how long the keepers have been in, a magnet and a small screwdriver will always loosen them up.....
