Installing a new oil catch can. UPDATE: If you use the catch can in this video DO NOT pack the baffle. Do NOT use the smaller aluminum tube adapters included. This engine does NOT like valve cover breathing restrictions. After few months of use, it's clear that this can is really too small for an older diesel...particularly one that's turbo charged and larger than 2 liters.
HERE IS A MUCH BETTER SUITED CAN:
Amazon: amzn.to/2RrTBSV
eBay: ebay.us/m1zEd7
Doing either of these creates restrictions and causes buildup of crankcase pressure. Kit included all tubes, fittings and mounting hardware. Optional items are breather filter, oil level dipstick, drain valve and baffle / media pre-filter canister. In this video, I attempt to explain which options to pay extra for and others to avoid entirely. Thanks in advance and please like, share and SUBSCRIBE! Happy Motoring!

You do realise you changing the diameter of the OEM piping just to fit it to the catch can is causing excessive crankcase pressure. The crank case ventilation system needs the vaccum caused by the turbo at the pre-turbo inlet to suck positive crank case pressure out of the engine. Excessive crank case pressure over time will cause more wear to your bottom end, cause your oil to sludge with unburnt fuel and could blow out your crank seals and cause oil leaks. It can also make it difficult for your engine to start because of the extra pressure behind the cylinders. Venting it to atmosphere also causes this because there is no vaccum sucking out the pressure I suggest getting a catch can with the same diameter inlet as your rocker cover outlet silcone hose so there is no restriction. Im a level 4 heavy diesel engineer by trade and also own a gen 2 pajero so im just trying to help out but i love your side mount intercooler!.
@offgridislandfamily
@offgridislandfamily 3 года назад
MUCH respect. Thanks for this. The plastic adapter piece that connects the manifold tube into the fat, rubber intake/turbo tube is smaller in inside diameter than the cheapy plastic hoses included in this kit. The biggest mistake was packing the small top canister with steel wool. This DID block pressure relief and DID cause oil leaks from the oil pan. However, in NO VIDEO have I heard discussion of 'needed' suction from the turbo to pull these gasses out of the engine. Right now, I am simply venting to atmosphere, as I cleaned my entire intake system and don't want it oil-coated anew.
@deathofantarctica5369

@@offgridislandfamily Yeah man I suggest getting a catch can with that larger diameter. The principle of the catch can is still good. You just cant modify the flow. Hopefully the info helps.

Hey, I cut my PCV tube and put hose on the OUTSIDE of cut ends (and catch can in between). Width didn't change, in fact, it got little larger, but the hoses are quite long. Will that have negative impact?

The black baffle is two parts. You can unscrew it to open it up and then fill it with the steel wool and screw it back together. That is what I did with mine. The line you showed is where it screws together. You will need a multigrip or large pliers to unscrew it the first time. It is easier after that to unscrew. You don't need to destroy it like you did 😊
@offgridislandfamily
@offgridislandfamily 3 года назад
Normally, you would be correct. However, this one is a cheap copy. Usable, but not as well manufactured. The canister does not unscrew, but is made to look like the expensive ones which do, with a fake 'seam'. The end 'cap' is glued on. ;-)

Please be SURE to read the pinned post at the top, from 'Death Of Antarctica'. I think it's the best overview of this discussion and I concede to his experience on this. @offgridislandfamily 3 года назад
Hello, do you mean the intercooler fan, or when is the intercooler functioning? One answer sort of fits both questions, but your intercooler isn't useful until your turbo starts pushing air through it, which is not in stop & go traffic. This is also the only time a fan is really useful, except that it's not, because the turbo isn't spooling in regular city driving.

@@kuyaYves OK...so, there is a temperature sensor at the back driver's side of the intercooler. You'll see two screws holding it in and one wire coming off of it. But, the fan is actually pretty useless, because the intercooler won't do anything for a turbo that is not spooling. And if the turbo is spooling, then the vehicle is moving fast enough for the hood scoop to pull in enough cool air. I think the electric fan is a neat idea, but not useful.

NOT AT ALL. ;-) That is why I updated the video description with a link to a FAR BETTER catch can for a cranky old diesel engine.

My 4m40 is recently rebuilt completely with stock internals no upgrades. Would any oil catch tank be useful for it?

@@AllSoWavyReese That’s the thing about the copy versions. They are made to look good enough to sell and they do. But missing the opening baffle function.

@@offgridislandfamily im not talking oil in a cans im talking about manifolds,do you have idea how long it takes to buidup the residue inside a manifold.6000 miles,50 000 miles .for the next cleanup.
@offgridislandfamily
@offgridislandfamily 3 года назад
@@greggregorich8048 Build-up inside the intake manifold is only ONE of several reasons to install catch cans. 2. Keeping residue off the valve-train is another. 3. The gasses removed by a catch can, if allowed return to the engine oil, would have a negative effect on engine oil viscosity and lubrication effectiveness. 4. Gasses also coat the inside of the entire intake system, which on most turbo vehicles, means the intercooler and intercooler piping system. Coating the inside of this intake cooling system obviously reducing air-cooling efficiency and thus, power. 5. The gasses being sent from your valve cover to the intake tube also burn much less effectively than fuel...again...reducing power. Finally, ALL cars built after about 1950 send valve cover gasses to the carburetor and/or intake system. This includes all the cars you have ever driven.
