Wow, so glad I found this video! I followed a different tutorial for Ortho4XP, and not only did it not describe the exact same steps as helpfully and completely, but it did NOT explain the fact that I do NOT need the Ortho4XP overlays IF I already have SimHeaven installed (which I do). As a result, I was very dissatisfied with the Ortho4XP overlay, gave up, and uninstalled all of my ortho completely! Now based on your video, I'm going to try again, and follow YOUR steps instead! I plan to set things up identically to yours - SimHeaven on top of Ortho4XP on top of AutoOrtho - can't wait!
Thank you very much for the kind words! I'm glad the video helped :) if you have any issues please do not hesitate to ask either here or on my discord (link in description)
Great video! I've followed this and the simheaven tutorial and it has completely transformed my xplane 12. Thanks very much and I look forward to seeing more!
Thank you very much! X-plane is great with simheaven and Ortho. Definitely more to come. I've love to see some screenshots of you X-Plane in action! Come join my discord. The link is in the description. Again thank you very much for your kind words!
Great tutorial. Wondering if you'd consider updating it for the Ortho4xp 1.4 fork. The settings layout has changed, and some settings were added for XP12.
hi man thank you for the concise and quick tutorial. I could quickly make some good tiles following by the numbers. but around Thule air base BGTL just had a problem. I chose USA2 for all levels because that looked the most balanced and the nice in the preview. turns out at level 18 and 19 the terrain is completely different. completely covered with snow. is this just the Way it is? is there a way to preview 18 and 19 so that they are not completely different to the base texture? thx 🙏🏼
Hello, unfortunately there isn't really a way round this. The highest you can preview Is zl13 and sometimes as you say it looks different at higher zoomlevels. Generally bing and arc are the best looking but it may take some trial and error to find the best source for a specific area. :)
I stopped using HD mesh when I moved to XP12 as I always had issues with how the water looked. However I am exploring ways right now to make the default mesh which is generated with ortho4xp look better and be more accurate. :)
Hi mate @DrishmalMAC2 - great video thanks. Can I just confirm that if you're using sim heaven, the only thing that you 'don't' need to do is the step you reference in the video. There are no other differences in the intial setup of ortho4xp?
Hi Drish another great video. I am using simheaven Europe combined with my first go at Ortho4xp. I selected Global Scenery location on Main Menu, chose a tile on the Globe but did not use Batch Build, Inserted folder locations in Settings, then went to Preview Params and installed ZL 17, 18 and 19 areas. I selected Save zone, Apply and Exit, then Main Menu and selected All in one and Exit. Ran X-lane11, modified INI file and scenery was great but when I went back into Ortho4xp to add new areas my tile was missing. Any idea how to add extra areas within the tile?
Hey, did you select the base folder again? If not then select the base folder on the main menu to wherever your already generates tile is. I hope that makes sense :)
According to documentation, scenery files are a priority-top order, so the higer they are the higher the priority, as far as i understand they should be on top.
That's for airport scenery. If you put Ortho4xp scenery sy the top of the scenery.ini file then all of the world buildings and airports would he missing and you would just have a flat world.
@@DrishalMAC2 Thanks, i wish xplane simplified these scenery upgrades, bot ms and xp still carry these old issues. IE horrible ancient cameras of msfs that give no sensation of flying at all.
Yeah the msfs camera system is not very good in my opinion. I much prefere the xp camera system. The scenery.ini method does make things more complex I agree. I have a video on my channel explaining how to setup the .ini file for pretty much any scenery type and also how to keep it nice and organised. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jBgxpAV84HM.html
Thank you for your tutorial as it helped me understand how to create my own orthos. Is there a setting where ortho4Xp will remember the location of the tiles you make? I go back later to ortho4xp and square I previously marked are gone and I have to guess where I made the tiles before. I noticed in your video ortho4xp shows where you previously made the tiles. Thanks.
Hi, When I try to draw more specific zoom levels on the preview it now uses lines to shape the area, can you only make one specific area a higher zoom level or can you make multiple areas with the lines? Thanks.
Hi mate, I would say that Ortho4XP is better as while it does take more storage space its much higher quality and less problematic. Autoortho is great but causes stutters and can be very problematic when setting up. If you have enough storage space I would recommend Ortho4XP
Saya menggunakan Ortho4XP 1.3 tetapi di kedua sisi kotak. hasilnya tidak terlalu bagus. Ada garis-garis lurus berwarna. Xplane version 12.8. bagaimana cara mengatasinya?.
Thanks matey. This is excellent and I am using it to cover most of Thailand or at least areas I will be flying say under 5000Ft. Now two questions. Now I have set the config file to download areas 1.5kms around airports at ZL19 and that works for new areas I now add. However I already downloaded the area covering Bangkok which has two main airports and forgot to add the ZL18 and ZL19 zones when I created this area. So my problem is I am trying to go back in and get it to add these higher res zones that I now set up, but whatever I do it just will not add them and all stay at my default ZL17. So is this possible or should I delete the area form my custom scenery folder and start again with this area?? Secondly, one of the airports I have is a pay ware add on airport VTBS from Taimodels which is excellent. So what happens for this area when the Ortho4XP tiles are added. I assume because teh new tiles are much further down the scenery_packs.ini file it just wont matter, but of course a waste of disk space.
Unfortunately you can't edit a tile already created so you'll have to delete it and do it again. Regarding the TaiModels scenery. It will use the ortho from the Scenery as its higher in the .ini. does the TaiModels scenery come with a custom mesh? If so it might stop ortho from showing so don't use the custom mesh if it does do that.
Thanks mate. But surely as I don't want the Orthor4Xp mesh to apply over the Taimodels scenery VTBS Bangkok airport but only outside or the airport scenery area, I see no mesh file for VTBS added in my scnery_packs.ini file so assume it does not have its own mesh but I cannot otherwise be sure of that. A bit of a PITA that you cannot edit to add higher res zones to an existing area. Oh well no biggy I will delete and redo it and let the config auto add the higher res ZL19 zones 1.5 kms around the airport Once again so many thanks to you for your helpful instruction video. Much appreciated.@@DrishalMAC2
It's higher quality and you have more control over your sources and zoom levels. However it does take more time and a lot more space on your harddrive. If that's not an issue for you then this is much more stable and has 0 impact on performance. Whereas autoortho takes up a lot of cpu power.
Personally I do prefere Ortho4XP over AutoOrtho as its much higher quality and has much less issues. I only use AutoOrtho for areas where I don't have regular ortho installed. You can also use both together. If you want more info on this then just let me know here or on my discord
@@DrishalMAC2 I like the idea of getting great detail in my highly flown areas and leave it at that. I’m not the guy that will be flying cross country flights. Just quick flights in familiar areas.
Ortho4xp will download the imagery locally to your computer, therefore taking up a lot of room however it has no performance impact when flying. Its also higher quality. Autoortho streams the imagery like MSFS however it has a large performance impact and is not as detailed. You can use whichever you would like
Ortho4xp is completely separate to Airport environment HD. You can install Ortho4xp as normal then install Airport Environmental HD as normal. Although if your on XP12 Airport Environment HD hasn't been updated for xp12
Depends on the area and zoomlevel (quality) you select. On average one tile of zl 17 (which is quite high) is about 5 - 7 gb Zl 16 is probably the best as a ZL 16 tile is probably only around 3gb. I use ZL17 base and then 18, 19 closer to the airport and my file sizes are about 7gb a tile. I have my orthos on a separate 1TB disk.
Sorry but I detest Discord as it is always such a PITA to log into it with OTT security crap which I hate. It will not accept my login using your link as it rightly says I already have an account somewhere on Discord that uses my email. So no thanks I will converse on here fine. So I have given up on Discord totally. TBH not a fan of RU-vid either as they censor open debate.
I agree that it's a lot of effort, but I don't think it "looks like ass". It looks very good once set up correctly. If you don't want to spend time on it then x-plane isn't for you. Msfs is probably a better option. I believe however both simulators have a place and both are great!
I disagree with you mate. after the tutorial I was immediately able to do a couple of tiles. it was around Dutch harbour where default scenery isn't very good. it's ok if you want to do a lot of tiles that's a lot of work. but where it really counts it can be really rewarding. archipelagos are a good example because the data size will be relatively low but the scenery comes alive
Thank you! Yes you are correct. I recently made tiles for honolulu and it took 3 mins for the whole area and surrounding islands. Looks much better now :)
7 hours to download one tile? That's definitely not normal. What zl where you using and what source where you using? Also what's your Internet speed? Also disable any antivirus and windows defender because that will slow it down too
Yeah that's what it should be doing, the messages you are getting are correct. It just shouldn't take that long. Where you doing anything else on the pc at the time?
