How to install Plugins and Presets in After Effects

A quick guide showing how to add extras to the software.
Most plugins these days come with an installer, but if you do have a plugin and you're not sure how to manually install it, this video talks you through the very simple steps. It is likely you will need Administrator access to your computer and be able to see the drive ‪@AdobeVideo‬ After Effects is installed on, but provided you have that access, then you should be good to go.
Installing Presets is a little different, but almost all the steps are the same.

Oh wow, thank you for the kind words and praise. Just to let you know though, that having additional (non-watching) subscribers doesn't actually help my channel all that much. At the subscriber numbers I have, views and view time matters much more. Someone explained it to me recently like if a baker sells 5 packets of scones to one person on one day (because someone wanted to reward him). So then the next he bakes enough for 6 packets, but no one buys them. But I do appreciate the sentiment!!! Hope I keep you entertained and informed.

I don't have a Support Files folder, I just have User Libraries, User Presets, and Video Libraries. This is a fresh install though, I usually work in Davicini Resolve but After Effects has a plugin I need. And yes, I closed out of After Effects while doing this

I think that sounds like you’re looking at the My Documents folder. That’s not the same as the program files folder. If I wrong, head over to my website, there’s a contact form on there and we can trade emails.

Don’t panic. AE will still open these. But to restore it, right-click on your file. Choose “Open With”. Then you should be able to navigate to and select AE.

“Looks” is probably referring to Magic Bullet Looks. This is a plugin From Maxon’s Red Giant. Maxon have their own installer which you’ll need to use.

When you have one file explorer open, go back to the start menu and open “My Documents”. A new window will open to that area and you can navigate to where your files are.

That sounds like your plug-in has its own installer, which probably attaches a licence file during install.

Hi. Despite putting the right files on the right folders (and even restarted the pc) but the files dont show up in after effects. And i know i´m putting them in the right place bcz that´s where my "user presets" save automatically. Any idea what could be happening?

Sorry, I’ve been swamped. If you save a new user preset, with a “searchable” name (e.g. “find me.ffx”) does it show up in After Effects? If it does, then search for this file on your C: drive. If it doesn’t then your user presets are defaulting to the wrong folder (like mine).

If you have an installer you should 100% use that to install the plugin. No idea what a DMG file is though, so I can’t help you with that.

When you go to save an animation preset, do you get a warning that you're not saving in the right place? I do. It's to do with how AE has installed everything. If that happens, not the location listed in the warning and drop your presets into that location. I ended up making a shortcut in the "wrong folder" to make it easier to get to the right one.

Sounds like you’re trying to use plugins which require registering. There’s normally an “about” link in the plug-in that will take you to a website.

That’s strange. Are you using a network computer? Are you definitely looking at the drive where the program is installed? After Effects also creates a folder in documents. It’s not that one

I think that’s beyond me. I’d contact the plug-in’s support. It sounds like the installation hasn’t worked correctly or you’re installing an old plugin that doesn’t have a certificate

RAR files are compressed files. If you have a plugin as .rar, you’ll most likely need to extract it. You’ll need to use a program like Winrar to extract it. Then you should be good to install it

My guess is that you’re trying to install an older plug-in. Maxon have updated all their installers (including red giant). Their support is pretty good at resolving issues though: www.maxon.net/en/support-center

I hope this preset is worth it, Looks is part of Red Giant’s suite: www.maxon.net/en/red-giant/magic-bullet Looks is a colour grading effect, so you can probably get away with replacing it with the included Lumetry effect.

That's strange that it's opening. Normally once placed in the correct folder, FFX files are just listed in the user presets. Could you have possibly loaded it into the old folder and not the latest one?

S_Shake is part of Sapphire Effects by @borisfx I beleive. The preset is expecting to use that effect. Hopefully it's just a case of re-installing Sapphire effects, but it is a pay-for plugin borisfx.com/documentation/sapphire/ae/shake/

How do you make the tunnel in your intro?

There should be settings for Sapphire to install in the drive you want, but they do have to install in the same folder as After Effects

@@ShiveringCactus I did that. I selected both Sapphire things to install in the same folder (and drive of course) but still it didn't show up. My ssd drive is empty, just my folder with everything like media I use for editing.

This latest version of After Effects (2023) seems to be causing issues with some 3rd party installers. I had to manually move some AEscripts plugins and wait for others to release an updated updated. Might be worth checking with @BorisFXco - their support team are really nice and have helped me in the past.

I don’t have a Mac, but try this: On a Mac, the plugin location is usually in Applications/Adobe After Effects/Plugins

What’s the plug-in / preset? It might have come with an installer.

@@ShiveringCactus It’s the twixtor plugin. It did. It came with an installer + my ae is the 2024 one.

@@Bp_Jenlisa- in that case, use the installer. I imagine the Twixtor plug-in also requires a licence file, which the installer handles for you.

The installer won't. It's a mini-program designed to do the installation for you. From your downloads folder, double-click it to open. It will then check it is installing in the right location (you can check it is pointing to the latest version of After Effects). When you confirm this, it will run and when you next open After Effects, you should see the Twixtor.
