This is a fabulous video that would make Macgyver proud. My brother-in-law and I were trying to get this fuel inlet out of a 15 year old generator with a Briggs & Stratton engine and this little trick to remove it really worked. Due to the availability of parts I made a couple substitutions that I wanted to share. 1. I couldn't easily find a metal sleeve to go over the screw like he did, so I used a 1/4 inch drive 9mm socket from my socket set. A 1/4 inch drive 3/8 socket will also work, but I use the 3/8 a lot and never needed the 9mm - so I used the metric in case something went wrong I'd only be using a metric that I never needed. But nothing went wrong and I still have it in case I need it. The brass fitting did get stuck in the 1/4 drive portion but came out easily once I grabbed it with some vice grips and pulled the brass fitting with some pliers. 2. I couldn't find a #10-24 self tapping screw, so I used a #10-24 stainless steel bolt I picked up at Home Depot (along with the matching stainless steel nut and washers). Stainless steel is harder that the zinc plated screws so it was easily able to cut and thread into the brass fitting - just make sure to go slow and straight. The overall length of the brass fitting is about 1/2 inch (12mm), so I threaded it in about 3/8 inch (9mm). I used a tape measure to make sure I didn't screw in too far and damage the carburetor or not enough and possibly strip out of the fitting. Before I saw this video I saw one where the guy used a wood screw and a pair of pliers. He warns that you have to be careful because it's easy to deform the carburetor, so I kept looking for videos until I found this one. It gave me the confidence that I could remove it without damaging the carburetor, and it worked perfectly.

I just used a tap and threaded the inside of the inlet, used a bolt, washers, nut and a socket to make the tool! Great idea and worked like a champ

Thank you so much. I ordered a new carburetor and it came in with the angled fuel inlet installed. I needed the straight one. They provided one in the box, but had no instructions and certainly no tool. I saw $63 flying out the window. I called the vendor and they knew nothing. After watching this video I was able to scratch through my junk box and make a tool quickly. It worked and I am back to cleaning up my yard after a tough winter. Again - THANKS!

Thanks for this, after watching countless videos of guys pulling out the brass nib with little or no effort using a vise grip, and me struggling to duplicate their technique with great frustration, I came across this video and your technique worked like a charm....thanks!

Cheers from the Old Dominion! I could figure out that I needed a puller but I couldn't figure out the logistics. 10 minutes after watching your video...."click" out it came! I used a long socket because I didn't have a steel piece to house it. Worked great! Brilliant!

I tried to follow the directions that came with package to use a vice grip and two flat blades to lift it out. It only collapsed the piece. I made one of your little Taryl Tools and lookie there, it came right out. You should sell the Taryl Tool as part of the replacement package from B&S. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video. You guys ROCK!!!!

Flip your c-clamp around so the stationary side is doing the pressing...use a small block of wood on opposite side....when the wood starts to dent from the pressure, it will keep the clamp from riding up. I've also replaced plastic elbows with all metal versions. The all metal versions can be tapped in with a small hammer.

Awesome, thank you! Worked like a charm - although I couldn't find a self-tapping 10-24 machine screw, I just tapped some threads in, used a small socket as the spacer, and it popped out easy, saving me a defeat at the hands of my TNT 100 vintage tecumseh engine haha.

The jack nut works but what i used was a #3 5/16-7/16 ease out. Screwed it in the fitting coming out side of carb and took a small crescent (adjustable) wrench and with a little left hand pressure, the piece came right out. Just another idea to try. And THANKS for your video. It was a money and time saver.

The removal worked like a charm. Waiting on my replacement elbow but expect that to work fine. I did soak the fitting with WD40 overnight before removal. I picked up a 10-24 1 1/2" hex head and used a 12mm socket. I did tap the fitting to allow the screw to go in easier and out it came with a few twists of the nut.
@ChillinChinchilla420
@ChillinChinchilla420 4 года назад
Red Baron what size nut did you use?
@redbaron8684
@redbaron8684 4 года назад
@@ChillinChinchilla420 Based on what I wrote above, it must have been a 10-24 nut. It just has to be big enough to cover the hole on the driver end of the socket you use so it applies pressure when tightening the hex head screw which pull out the fitting that was pressed in.

Taryl.......you are the bomb! It works and works great! I used a 3/4 inch long #10 self tapping machine screw (with coarse threading (#24 threading) with a hex drive head. I also had the advantage of having a #10-24 tap from my tap and die set to get the threads started inside the brass nipple that was still pressed into the carburetor body. I had trouble finding a #10-24 self tapping machine screw with a hex head that was longer than 3/4". The stores around here (Lowes, Home Depot, the hardware stores) did not seem to stock any longer than 3/4 inch; but 3/4 was all I needed. I also used a C-clamp to press the new inlet into its place in the carb body. That technique, too, worked like a charm and the weak "pot metal" carb shoulder that houses the pressed in "fuel inlet" is still intact without any damage. Keep up your entertaining and very informative videos. I watch them all...and more than once!

Your videos are without a doubt, "unique" !! I like the fact that you put some fun into the usual "How To". Your knowledge and expertise becomes evident as soon as you begin with the actual repair. One of my favorite parts of your videos, is your ability to create "home made" tools, and specialty tools, that manufacturers purposely make procedures for repair, or replacement of parts in a manner that requires their tool, and "only" their tool to complete the task. You take some common sense, along with your experience to avoid paying a ridiculous amount of cash for a tool, a DIY'er might use once !! Ford makes a special tool to remove locking tabs on the bottom of a vehicle gas tank, for the fuel pump housing. Because the design is different on the replacement. Just to cut off four small plastic tabs, this specialty tool cost $250 !! The fact that they attempt to frighten you, by making it a point of how dangerous it is, that the vapor barrier on the inside of the tank is never cut. Using a good quality utility knife, new blade, and steady hand, and taking your time, accomplishes removal of those tabs ! It also saves you $250 !!

On my carb the 10-24 is way too big even if I taper down the end. I've never seen an 8-24 so I guess I'll attempt an 8-32 and see if that does it. I also thought about using a dent puller if I can find the right size screw end for it. UPDATE: I solved my problem using the "dent puller" technique. I found a #8 Deck screw (Like a drywall screw only harder) I placed a fender washer over it and screwed it in tight. Then I used a pair of electrician's side cutter pliers (which doubles as a hammer for us electricians) like a dent puller's weight and hit the back side of the washer. After about three whacks the insert popped right out. Real simple and real fast.

Hi Taryl, Can you tell me how I can figure out how to get the linkages back on a carburetor? I have a Briggs and Stratton Pulsa-jet and I bought the machine used. Apparently the previous owner tried to fix it and didn't put the linkage back on right. I looked for diagrams to show me how put the linkage back on my machine. But, none of them show how the things go back on. Thanks Taryl.
