Thanks for the help. I got a new bride boot, silver retainer off of Amazon and hybrid racing Shift knob for my RSX and wanted to see how it would all work.
Awesome, I've ordered a similar one to fit in my mazdaspeed 3 (with aftermarket boot and gear knob) and I was really nervous about how it's going to work, this has cleared it all up for me
All you need to do to help keep the stock boot ring up against the shift knob, is electrical tape... and there's no need to remove the shift knob when doing this easy fix. Pop up/off the boot's plastic trim piece, then pull up the leather boot up so you can see the metal shaft under it. Push the boot ring all the way up against the shift knob's base, then proceed to wrap electrical tape around the shaft (up against the shift boot ring). Make sure you build up/wrap the electrical tape onto itself in a neat way. Keep wrapping until it's thick enough to keep the shift boot ring from sliding down the shaft. Fixed for less than $1. ;-)
Hey does this retainer cause the shift knob to be more high up? Just curious because i want to order one but i really don’t want my shift knob to go higher than it already is lol
It does cause it to go up higher. They do make a lower profile one that does not raise it that much. Here's a link to it. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F370958984334
I don't have extensive experience with the manual GK5s, but I would assume there's a way to pop off the silver plastic trim around it. Look around the bottom edge of it for a small tab to pry from. If not, it's possible the whole center console needs removed.
