In this video I show you how to install backsplash tile. Subway tile is a popular option for kitchen backsplash and it is pretty simple to install. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions!

This is my backsplash tile and 4" off set. Love it

I enjoyed your video. Your straightforward, no-nonsense style is refreshing. You checked the level of the first 2 rows and found a couple spots that were a little high and it looked like you just moved the spacers around to get level. Were you able to do that because the edges aren't even? I'm about to do our backsplash and have tiles with faces like yours but the edges are a bit irregular and I've been worrying about how to keep them level without going crazy using more than one size of spacer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, they were a bit irregular and the edges aren't square. They taper a bit so they are larger at the back. The farther you push in the spaces the bigger the gap. They have little wedges, usually with the tile spaces at big box stores or flooring stores that you can use. Use a level (stick or laser) as you go along to make sure they are level as you go. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this - I have a backsplash to do this week and I needed a refresher. Great idea keeping the extra cement off the walls! See you in the grouting video??

Nice vid, thanks! Any reason you preferred to start in the corner versus in the middle area (stove) to even the cuts on both side?
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 3 года назад
I usually do with a stacked or 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 offset. I would have centred off the stove. Any symmetrical layout. With a 3rd step like this I try to keep it looking more random. I always find that the more I try to overthink the 1/3 or 1/4 stepped look it just doesn't work out the way I want anyway so I don't bother. I find this layout doesn't draw your eye to a centre anyways. The layout is always tough! There are lots of options and I usually ask the customer what they would like to see

How can I know if the last tile in every line will be nice or not nice cut please ?

Hey great video. Quick question- I like how you didn't use a wet saw to cut the more complicated cuts but what is that tool you used called? I'm about to tackle tiling for the first time and would like to use that instead

Thanks. I used a 4" angle grinder in it with a diamond blade made for tile. Wear a dust mask, safety glasses and ear plugs!

What do you have between the countertop and wall of where the backsplash is going? I see the cover but is there something specific you are using to cover the back bottom edges? Thanks!

What tile is that and did you use 1/8 spacers? HD or lowes? I just bought some like that but it's all uneven on sides and spacers don't work. I think I'm going to return for a square tile like yours. I think i saw them at HD or L. Thanks great.

I got it from a tile supplier, don't remember what it was called. 1/16 spacer probably.

Hey boss! Quick question. 28 square foot simple backsplash in kitchen (I have the product) paying someone for the labor to do it. What’s a fair price ?? I want to make sure I’m not getting hosed ! Thx!!
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 2 года назад
There are way too many variables to get you a price. Location, tiles, number of receptacles, etc etc. If you feel the price is too high, all you can do is get another quote or 2. Good luck!
@johnc1280
@johnc1280 2 года назад
@@BrentDarlington I understand what you’re saying. There is three outlets. But honestly there’s Gotta be a ballpark figure. If one person would do it for 3 or 400 and he’s going to quote me 900 then yeah somethings amiss
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington 2 года назад
@@johnc1280 one person may put down drop clothes and clean up well, make nice clean cuts, take his time and do a good job. And the other may make a big mess, do a sloppy job, and be done by lunch time. I've lost jobs for my price being too high and lost jobs for being too low. If price is your main concern than you may get what you pay for.

@@BrentDarlington I don’t trust people enough to not inflate a simple job even. I’ve had one company say 400 to pump my septic and another 350 and the one who came and did it was 139 (and professionally, I watched them do it standing right there) so you get my point

@@BrentDarlington can’t believe it. The guy called me today. Said $500. That’s to 1. come in level out a few bowed areas in the wall. Next day 2. do the tile. Next day 3. grout and seal. Wow. That seems like a no-brainer right?? To go with him

Already fail should center the hood

@BrentDarlington 27 дней назад
I hear ya. I usually do but with the 1/3 offset I did, it will look weird either way. Plus you don't really see around the hood since it's a micro hood. Half bond or stacked for sure I centre on the range. Thank you for your constructive criticism. It's people like you that make the internet a wonderful place. Have a great day!

Hey, so I'm in the middle of tiling my kitchen backsplash with 3x6 marble and 1/8" spacers over a granite top. I've watched several how to vids that say you should leave an empty grout space at the bottom on the counter top as an expansion joint that will be filled with color matched caulk. And thats what the floor and decor store "experts" advised me to do. So thats what I've been doing. But like your video, I've seen people not putting spacers on the bottom, also. What is industry best practice?
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington Год назад
Lol expansion joint. The granite and tile isn't going to expand. And 1/8" is a pretty big grout space for tile these days
@rrmorris67
@rrmorris67 Год назад
@@BrentDarlington Not just about the granite and the tiles. It's about everything else. Houses settle. I didn't make this up. I've been reading, talking to people, and watching vids. Clearly this isn't a universally accepted procedure.
@BrentDarlington
@BrentDarlington Год назад
@@rrmorris67 I think you are worrying about it too much. What is the worst that's going to happen? I've installed lots of back splashes and never had a call back about the house settling and causing an issue at the top of the counter
@beanieweenie9543
@beanieweenie9543 Год назад
@@rrmorris67actually you are correct. Industry standard is to leave a gap between tile and countertop and also in corners for expansion. It can cause problems by not doing so.
