I tried burning the iso on a usb flash drive with balena etcher. It gave error. That there is no file syatem on this image and it may not boot. Then i went on a wondows machine and instlled rufus and it also gave the same error but then it also said that to repair this i can press yes to continue to download a file to rufus and that will fix the issue. So i did click on yes. And it then made a usb bootable. Now my problem is that when i boot from that USB, it starts the installer. With that yellow loading bar on the. Top. Great content! Thank you so much! Is there a way to mount SATA HDD/SSD to the ESXi bare metal server without formatting/wiping them?
@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek Год назад
Unfortunately, you can't. To utilize a disk in ESXi as place to storage VM workloads you'll need to have it formatted in VMFS and mounted as a datastore. That being said, there are other means of passing through disks to VMs using hardware passthrough, but that ties the disk to a specific virtual machine only. HTH! Thanks for the comment!
@realLuisGiordano
@realLuisGiordano 2 года назад
If your server supports it, you can boot the hypervisor from an SD card or an internal USB drive, saving a hard disk to be used as a datastore. ESXi needs at least 1 GB, so a 8 GB USB or SD card is more than enough.

Nope! ESXi will happily run a VM of ESXi! It’s a bit of inception, but believe it or not that’s how VMware does it’s training as well.

Thank you for sharing this video. However, I have a question! I'm trying to install VMware ESXi 7 U2/U3 on a HPE Proliant DL360 Gen10 server. I have 2 x 1.92 TB SSDs installed and 1 6248R Processor with 32Gb RAM. I want to achieve ESXi installation on the RAID 1 logical drive. I successfully create the RAID 1 logical drive. However, during ESXi installation, the logical drives are not appearing as a destination drive option. What should I do? Which specific VMware ESXI 7 U2/U3 image file should be using?
@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek 2 года назад
Great question! This sounds like it's an issue of ESXi either not having driver support for your RAID card or possibly that the RAID card in your host isn't a hardware RAID but actually a software RAID, which VMware doesn't support. Here's where I'd start first - Since you're installing ESXi on an HPE server, download and use the customized ISO from HPE. www.hpe.com/us/en/servers/hpe-esxi.html (just find the version of ESXi you wanna install, download, and then follow our USB install instructions from the video.) Big vendors like HPE, Cisco, Dell, etc. build VMware ESXi ISO installs that contain drivers specific to their gear that may not be in the generic ESXi install ISO that VMware produces. It's the same version of ESXi that you'd get from VMware with the added value of having the drivers for the specific hardware from the vendor. Best of luck! Thanks for the comment and consider subscribing!

Technically speaking, vCenter is the central orchestration software, vSphere is the overall suit of different products that encompass VMware’s virtualization portfolio which included ESXi, but the point is taken.

If you are going to use VCenter, do you put your guest O.S. in the esxi like you did Linux or do you add Vcenter and put it inside Vcenter?
@2GuysTek

Can you elaborate here? I'm not sure what you're asking. vCenter runs as a virtual appliance inside of an ESXi host. See if you can't clarify your question a bit more and we'll do our best to answer!

Hello i have a question about type 1 hypervisors. If i wanted to install drivers on it is that possible and can i just do that in dom0? I need this because i want to use qubes os which is an os that is built on the xen hypervisor.
@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek 2 года назад
This is a complicated question to answer - specifically because it really depends on the hypervisor you're using. If we're talking about ESXi then additional driver compatibility is very limited. VMware breaks down drivers into 3 categories: VMware-supplied, Vendor-supplied, and Community-supplied. VMware-supplied drivers are straight from the source, vetted and guaranteed to be safe and reliable (typically). Vendor-supplied drivers are drivers that VMware considers safe and the hardware vendor has tested and vetted to work with ESXi. Community-supplied drivers have no guarantee of reliability or vetting and can put the system at potential risk. In recent versions of ESXi VMware has been making moves to limit and in some cases even remove the ability to load community-supplied drivers. Because Qubes-OS is based on Xen, you'd have to see what Xen will allow to load as far as hypervisor-level drivers are concerned. Unfortunately we can't really speak to that since we've not played around with with Qubes-OS (but we're going to now!) Thanks for watching and consider subscribing! All the best!

@IAmAlpharius14 2 года назад
@@2GuysTek thanks for the elaborate answer i appreciatie it! Cool to hear you're gonna take a look at it. I think qubes is really great if you are very serious about your privacy. Downside is that the os is resource hungry and gaming on it is almost out of the question since it also doesnt have hardware acceleration due to security concerns. Because its so heavy on resources i bought a more powerful laptop for it so once that arrives im also gonna be able to play around with it :D

i have a question... i followed this pretty much exactly... i am running this in a VM just like in the video... however i was trying to install a windows 10 client instead of linux. When i go to run the VM, the window pops up where it would normally show the VM, but it says "Failed To Connect". In the thumbnail window, i can see it updates to the screen where it asks to press any key to enter setup, but for some reason the actual VM window just says failed to connect. After a while of just staying on, the VM thumbnail will eventually update to show the boot manager screen, but when i click on it, the pop-up window just says it fails to connect.. Is there a network setting or something i am missing? i have followed this guide exactly the same... wanted to make sure i was getting this correct before actually putting on a physical machine to tinker with to get experience. Thanks.
@michaelhanson5773
@michaelhanson5773 3 года назад
not sure if this helps, but when the VM is running, i can click on Launch Remote Console and it will open a new tab in VMWARE and i can then view the VM normally... however, when i click to open the browser console, it opens the new window and says "Failed To Connect" so this lends me to think it is a network issue or something since it won't open through Microsoft Edge browser?

nvm... apparently BitDefender is blocking this. Not sure why... looks like i will need to look into the settings more and figure it out.

@2GuysTek 3 года назад
Out of curiosity, why are you nesting your hypervisor? What hypervisor are you running ESXi under?
@michaelhanson5773
@michaelhanson5773 3 года назад
@@2GuysTek i mean, i just wanted to see what esxi was all about since i am a hyper-v person but to date hyper v doesnt support nesting with amd processors without running a preview build of windows to get version 9.3. I was running esxi under vmware workstation. I get it is a type 2 hypervisor and is slower but it is all i can get amd nesting to work with on a windows platform that i have access to so i can install it and mess around during a trial. Your guide also showed esxi running under a vm so it was nested as well. Only difference i guess is that my host had bitdefender installed which basically took over blocking access to the https and then the vms through the NAT. Looks like it is a common issue.. although i dont mind turning it off for a bit when just messing around with esxi. The reason i would use nesting at home and why we use it at work (via intel) os for software development since we run our development stations in vms and they also need to emulate devices like android. I had heard esxi supported nesting with amd, and wanted to check it out but not completely have to throw together a machine to use it.

@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek 3 года назад
In theory, yes. There's a lot of questions that would need to be answered first like, are you planning to keep the RAID array intact as-is or are you planning on having ESXi use the RAID array for datastore volumes? Also, you'll need to verify that your RAID card is supported by ESXi. At a minimum though, if you blew everything apart and ran ESXi on the host, you could have a VM of OMV running to serve your home media like it does now, and you could have a Windows 10 VM running concurrently with you passing the 2080 GPU and some USB ports directly to the VM for game playing - Then you'd just connect the monitor to the 2080, and the mouse and keyboard to the passed through ports and you're off and running. That makes it sound easier than it is though - but it is doable.

@@2GuysTek thanks! Been searching for the best way to do this. Since I have a RAID 6 70TB Array with 40TB of data I really want to preserve it. Also since OMV is running great with multiple dockers I am wanting to convert this to a vm. I am thinking it would be good to take the 1tb ssd with OMV and once it's converted to a vm use it to with another 1TB SSD to store the VM's.

@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek 2 года назад
Sorry, to be clear - You'll install ESXi directly using a USB stick and connect a keyboard and monitor to the host you're install ESXi on. After the installation is complete then you'll use a different PC to connect to the web UI of your installed ESXi host. To produce the installation USB stick for ESXi you'll need another PC with a browser to download the ISO from VMware, and using Rufus (an ISO to USB flashing tool we mention in the video) you'll create your installation media. The video walks you through that process, but don't hesitate to ask if you have questinos!

@2GuysTek

Neither. When you write the ESXi ISO file to your USB stick using Rufus, it will be 'formatting' it at the same time. The ISO file is an image, and that image will be written to the USB stick, overwriting any data already on the USB stick.

@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek 2 года назад
@@nonope9355 Correct. ESXi as an OS is extremely lightweight, and requires very little in terms of computer, storage, and RAM to run. This is by design to leave as much of the available hardware free for VMs. So all interactions you have with it will be done through the management WebUI or directly to the VMs themselves. For example, if you're running Windows in a VM, you could use RDP (remote desktop) to get a desktop from your Windows VM, or use the 'zero console' from within the ESXi WebUI. If it's a Linux VM you could always SSH into your command line environment or install and use VNC to get a remote desktop. Hope that helps!

What CPU are you attempting to install ESXi 7 on that isn't supported? Also - your missing storage is not likely related to the CPU compatibility. To get to that point in the install you're already beyond the point that you would be prevented from installing ESXi due to CPU compatiblitiy.

I agree, ESXi is the best hypervisor out there, hands down. I've tried Hyper-V and XEN. They are not even close. The best way to become a fan of one of the others is to not work with and understand ESXi. Once you've spent time with ESXi, what you learn is what Hyper-V cites as an advantage over ESXi, is actually one of their own shortcomings. Hyper-V is like the dumb blonde. It looks good but has nowhere near the stability or smarts.
@2GuysTek
@2GuysTek 2 года назад
You, sir, are preaching to the choir! I will say however, the one thing that ESXi lacks in comparison to other virtualization platforms out there is the native container support. The 'AIO' systems like unRAID and Proxmox do have the added benefit of being an all-in-one setup for people running #homelabs. And that's only possible because they're built on top of a full Linux kernel. VMware's secret sauce is and has always been it's purpose-built virtualization-only hypervisor. Runs in RAM, super small footprint, and is truly enterprise-grade. Thanks for the comment, consider subscribing!

You can give this fling a try: flings.vmware.com/usb-network-native-driver-for-esxi But for the most part you're right - VMware adheres to a rather stringent HCL (hardware compatibility list) to guarantee it's reliability and uptime for production. That excludes a lot of cheaper PHYs on the market.
