Update April 30, 2023: There seems to be a new bug where after you install Guest Additons you'll get a black screen. To fix this shut down your VM, open your VM settings, then click on display and set the graphics controller to a different one. Try each one and see if you can get it to work again. You also might want to try turning off 3D Acceleration. Update October 23, 2022: There has been an update to virtual box which has changed a few minor things: First you need to select this ISO image when creating a new virtual machine (In the same Windows where you name your VM) or you can add it later in the virtual machine settings > storage and adding the ISO file to the optical drive. Also make sure that "Skip Unattended Installation" is checked. Moreover, you are having trouble downloading Firefox on XP, download it on your host machine and use Shared folders to transfer the installer to your VM. Here is a tutorial I made on shared folders: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FYmck1G0fqY.html
I have been trying to do this for 3 years now, every guide I followed skipped over how to enable virtualization. You helped me do the thing I have been trying to do for Three. Years. Thank you SO MUCH
Thanks for the tutorial! Now I can play my old childhood computer games. I wasn't sure I'd ever get to play Magic School Bus, Thinking Things, or Roller Coaster Tycoon again. Thank you!
I just used this to set up a VM on my computer and everything worked as you described when the added info is included. I did have a problem with loading Firefox, but your suggestion of a shared directory worked a treat. Thank-you for such a good tutorial.
Thank you so much for this! My XP install froze the first time (left it for over an hour, the dots were still moving so thought it might be thinking) but then I restarted my computer and then it worked just fine and installed quite quickly.
HEADS UP for anyone who boots into a black screen after installing guest additions!! i had this same issue too, the solution i found online that seems to work for me is to change the VGA adapter to VMSVGA. you can do this by closing out of the virtual box (shutting the machine down), and then clicking settings. you then want to click "display," and then next to "graphics controller" is a drop down menu, from which you can select VMSVGA
it started working, but now I am unable to make it full screen. i changed the display settings inside the VM to be close to full screen, but having 1920*1080 would be better. do you know why? thanks in advance
This is a super helpful video. The software has changed since this video was made. I tried using the latest release, 7, and couldn't get it to work. I took another commenters advice and used an older version, 6.1.5, and it worked. It took a little more tinkering than he showed in this video, but not too bad. I couldn't have done it without this video.
12/13/2023 Thanks for your video. The instruction was excellent. Some views I got during the process were different that on your vid, but kept moving ahead. Your firefox link didn't work in the Virtual XP, but I read a lot of comments and someone mentioned Shared Folders and used that to drag and drop the file. Worked great!
For me, copying the link for Firefox into the VM was of no use, since Internet Explorer wouldn’t load the page anyway. What did work was creating a folder on my Host, in which I put the installer for Firefox and then making it a shared folder to access the file in the VM
How did you put the installer in the folder by just using the link? Genuine question since I'm really new to this stuff haha (also sick profile picture)
@@benis8220 Fair enough lol. Although you can still do this if you disable internet for your WinXP VM, then use a shared folder to get the installer, then turn off shared folders and do what you need with the VM
@4:00 new version of this screen (I assume as it's my first time using linux or virtual box) also lets you choose Processor count. Oracle forums seem to recommend that the default value of one (1) is enough except in some circumstances (I couldn't understand what they were, so I assume they're not for me). Ah, you already pinned an update! Thanks.
Thank you for this video! Im a 10 year old tech enthusiast, and i wanna experience 2015 childhood, so i wanna just say… Thank You. Just Thank You. You saved my childhood. Youre a legend, bro!
For any one struggling with file sharing or copy and pasting the Firefox link you can just as easily enable drag and drop to move the file after you have extracted it on your host system/
Many thanks for this well designed tutorial! Question: Do I have to install a fresh version of XP from a downloaded install ISO, or can I use an already existing install that has a lot of my software on it? If I have to install fresh, can I simply copy my registry and windows dlls and so forth from my pre-existing install that has so much software on it? Or do I have to reinstall the software and import my files?
Awesome video! covers all the steps in a clear and concise manner. one question: How would I send files from my host OS to the VM? for example to install an old game? Thanks again for this tutorial!
Go to settings after that I think you click a folder option once you do that click the green plus with a folder on the right and click on your folder you want to share
Along with that black screen bug, I couldn't for the life of me get widescreen to work in later VirtualBox versions. Stick to 6.1.32 - It also runs faster from my experience (less choppy mouse movement)
I haven't found a way to download guest additions yet. But you can right click on the desktop, click properties, go to settings and change screen resolution to 1280 by 1024 pixels (1600 by 1200 pixels hides the start button and taskbar for me for some reason). This will make the screen bigger but its still not full screen. However, you can actually go to scale mode by pressing the host key + C (host key is right ctrl if your on windows). That will let you change the screen resolution as much as you want to make it basically full screen. Just go to the corner of the virtual machine and drag until its fills up the screen. But video quality might be lower than usual.
Somehow it is stuck on the final oracle VM virtualBox Guest Additions "Excecting "C\program files\Oracle\VirtualBox guest additions\BoxDrvInst.exe"" . I already tried restarting and even install another box with windows xp. Any ideas?
Hello TheHowToGuy123,Thank you so much for this tutorial really well explained easy to follow especially with all files provided. I'll now be able to play on "Paint" as I did years ago.Thank you so much will Like and Subscribe!
Bro I just subscribed you come up with every thing that can go wrong like even the Firefox installer it gives me a error that it won't load so you also made a tutorial for shared folders in order to get it fixed thank you so much
thanks for the tutorial. i want to add something. windows xp takes up 2,5 gigabytes of space. i created vm with 5 gigs, i didint know it would take such a space. so when creating a hard disk people should consider this.
While I was going through set up, I thought and thought about that 10 GB he showed... and I went for 32 GB. Everything went great until I tried to download Firefox, the bitly isn't working for me. ... hence my reading all the comments in hopes of finding an answer,
Thank you So Much for the Tutorial! It really helped me alot to go back into the Old Day's Of Windows. I really, really, appreciate the Help you provided in your Video. Just, Thank you so much!
im gonna use this a lot cause my dad used to have an old windows xp pc but we threw it away like 2 years ago and this will help see what it is like thx
The latest version of VM could arise some problems during installation like: a very slow installation (I left the process going on for severl hours without any improvement) or a black window. For the second problem you have to go into setting and change the graphic cards. For the first problem, I tried multiple things but the only one that worked for me is to downgrade oracle VM to version 6.1 and everything works fine, You will find this version in the official page
I have no practical purpose for this, just wanted to install expee for that nostalgia. Thanks! Prob pretty good for retro gaming too. Hopefully virtualization will mean I won't have driver issues. Edit: My XP installer was finishing up while I decided to watch the rest of this vid just to see what else you might do and I was startled by the glorious XP startup sound lol.
If the product key in the description is not working, try any of this... 3D2W3-8DJM6-YKQRB-B2XDB-TVQHF YXF2Y-QRRKR-BFKVQ-RHQ7H-DJPKD G2JMP-2PC7G-RYBYX-PPF38-3KKTY BMYY7-WH8QJ-6MTWG-MXXVQ-MD97B TWHCC-DC33F-G4JJP-BTR2B-RKRYT 4X7WM-GTH3D-DWVCV-H382J-HPMRD
@@janvertonghen14 It will work for sure. Each product key has 25 characters, don't add the dashes, each line contains each product key. Make sure to follow these steps. May be it does not work is because of you're beginner in PC. You know it will take time to step forward in digital world. Also, I'm noob for pros.😜 Sorry for my bad English. Trying to improve

This was very nicely explained! A lot better then then the VM I tried to create of Win 95 wich didn't work properly bc the 40 min tut didn't explain everything good enoug lol!
Appreciate this video boss! Was fantastic. I did want to ask because I could not find a video. Do you have any guides for getting XP drivers installed and or burnt to an image to mount?
You obviously haven’t heard of legacy software. Some actually have significant investment in data created in software that will only work on a particular OS. Think before you type grasshopper!
@@judd_s5643 You clearly don't understand my comment. It's stating that windows xp is nostalgic and the best windows OS. I don't like any other windows really, I'm a linux person.
