Another great 101 video. Two things: 1. I also want to stress the cutting tool is a must. It will last long enough to hand down to your kids, and you can not correctly cut housing without one! 2. You should always have enough cable to rotate your bars a full 180* so the cables don't get ripped out. In a crash, your bars will easily spin 180* as you and the bike tumble down the hill. The last thing you need after a crash is a unrideable bike.

Sometimes there is some metal left over from the cut. Always a good idea to also check the end of the cable after cutting. A light filing from the inside to out direction can level off the cut (keeps filings from falling in) before opening the hole.. any of those rough edges can still wear on the cable even with the ferrule on

Tri-flow and Boeshield T9 are good lubricants for cables. Not necessary to lube them, but it does make things smoother. It makes more sense on bikes with continuous cable housings because there are fewer places for dirt to get in and contaminate the lube.

During ur process of installing the cable u mentioned that u don't apply lube to the cable I do for 1 reason, it prevents the cable from getting rusted inside the housing I've learned this thru installing many cables.

thankfully I was able to reuse the housing from my old shifter, the included cable with my shimano shifter slide right through the housing no problem. I was initially worried it would get snagged but it didn't. Plus my bike uses a full length cable housing so no need to cut different lengths of housing, i really don't know why all bikes don't use a housing the full length of the cable.
@rgmtb
@rgmtb 2 года назад
So the reasoning behind less housing is less friction hance easier shifting. Personally I think it's splitting hairs. Yeah, there may be less friction but it also introduces more areas for dirt to get into the system. Not sure what's better?

Regarding cable lubrication prior to install; I rub a little grease (non bike specific) along the cable before running it through everything. Mainly just as extra moisture resistance for the exposed parts. There is a slight benefit to reducing friction of cable inside the housing but I don't find it very significant.
@Cobalt985

Thank you for this video. It was very helpful, but I have a question. Is there a compelling reason to break the housing up and have some exposed cable, versus running solid housing from shifter to derailleur? I am in the process of converting my Cannondale Habit to 1x11, hence watching this video, and the stock SLX shifters both had solid housings from shifters to derailleurs. Thanks in advance.

Great question! The idea was to cut down on friction against the cable. Personally I don't think it helps much at all. I'd rather have all enclosed cables if I had my choice.

Hi mate I was asking could I use my old cable housing?
@rgmtb
@rgmtb 2 года назад
Sure thing. During a change like this I sometimes take the opportunity to replace some stuff but it is not required unless for some reason the existing housing is not long enough. Example, same rear mechs attach to the housing different then others so depending on what you have and what your going to things might change.

I put all mountain style clear frame guards on my bikes, it will also protect the frame in a crash so it wont get scraped up, but I had to cut them to fit some places. but you can also use 3m automotive clear vinyl wrap, but it wears out faster. here is Alex Chamberlin 's video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKQ3BPi0QSU.html But hte problem is that they wear out, So I recommend All mountain style for your bike as you will use it for street. Invis make frame specific wrap, made of 3m automotive wrap: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FyBKiOpiz5o.html
