Introducing yourself to colleagues can be AWKWARD if you're starting a new job or your first day on the job.

For the smiling tip! I began to notice how many of my close friends in high school and the beginning of college mention how scary it was to approach me and how I was so different once they got to know me! I think it was a good wakeup call about how I was coming off to strangers at that time! I definitely agree with Adriana's tips! 😄

Hey thanks ... Tomorrow is my first day . Tomorrow I will be entering into new phase of life which is student to job person. Little nervous amd worried about how am I going to spend 8-9 hrs without my friends. Cause in college I always had someone with me but tomorrow will be different. Hi, really interesting video. I am generally very shy around people that I don't know, and am not very good at meeting new people. This includes when I start a new job (or even when other people start working at the same place as me), or in a social environment like joining a new club. I believe that as I tend to avoid approaching people I haven't met before that I come across as unapproachable myself, and don't make it easy for people to feel comfortable approaching me. I'm generally outgoing amongst people that I know, but it is the initial meeting that I struggle with. I'm starting a new job in a couple of months so I know I need to make a better effort to meet and talk to new people.

First, congrats on the new job. You must be excited. Be prepared to take the lead with introductions. Due to COVID everyone is trying to deal with immediate needs and introductions may not be on people’s mind. For your first meeting, reach out to the meeting organizer, in advance, and let them know it’s your first team meeting and ask them if they can do an introduction. When introducing yourself focus on your current role and how you can be of service to the team. Past work history is good for personal one on one conversations or to provide evidence of your expertise. Just don’t dwell on it. Another tip is to look at the meeting invite list and send personal short individual emails to people you haven’t met yet but will be in the meeting. Open it with hi, you want to intro yourself before the meeting on (insert date) and what you currently do and how you can be of service. Short and sweet is key. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Good question....the fake it till you make it is in reference to confidence. Our mind constantly tells us stories that we are not good enough (which is not true) hence why some people lack confidence. Being authentic means being empowered and honouring who you are minus the negative self talk in our head. Sometimes to tap into our authentic self we need to get past the negative chatter and act confident until it happen naturally. Thanks for watching... cheers!

Thanks for the great tips. I would consider finding out what kind of group of people you are in (e.g., manager, CEO, rank and file etc..) then design the introduction to help connect with them and how you (new kid on the block) can be beneficial in achieving the common goals.

The same tips apply for all personality types. Unfortunately, there's not much of a way to get around introducing yourself - it's something that must be done. Hi Adriana, I'm Thiri from Myanmar. I'm 31 and graduated in Computer Science. Currently, I'm working at a local IT Company as a Project Manager. We don't speak English at the office, only using our mother language. That's the problem of mine speaking English fluently and smoothly. I saw your video and that's great. See you soon.

I didn't do this very well in my first couple of new jobs. I was much too serious. Now, I'm much more relaxed and friendly. I think after watching this I would probably mention that I'm a passionate tournament chess player and volunteered coaching kids chess for 3 years.

What would be your suggestion for introducing yourself to your new colleagues via email (due to the working from home)?

I would do a group email just introducing yourself and giving them a little background. Not too much but enough that they get the feel of who you are and what you are about. I would also suggest down the road a virtual meeting and do a team building exercise to get the group engaged with each other and with yourself.
