Father taught me this at the age 12, it was my responsibility to iron my trousers and dress shirts for school every weekend. Thanks for the memories

Those were the days. New parents never iron their clothes knowing 'they will get crumpled anyway', at least in this country.

When I was working my way through college in the early 70s, I worked in a shop in Beverly Hills that was frequented by all of the Hollywood stars who lived in the area. One such regular was Fred Astaire who liked to visit on Wednesdays when we first opened. He was very kind, soft-spoken and as well-dressed a man as I have ever seen on or off screen. You could cut your finger on the creases in his slacks.

Just what the doctor ordered. Having one's trousers professionally pressed was a worthy expense until now. The proper way to keep them looking top notch has been revealed. Here's to you Ash! Cheers!

Your source for the ironing cloth is genius! I’ve ironed my clothes for more than 50 years and never heard of an ironing cloth. It makes a lot of sense.

Hey, Ash. I may have left a comment before in the past, but since I really can't remember whether or not I did I figured I would here. I needed to thank you in some way, if I hadn't already. To keep this brief, I didn't grow up with a dad; the closest person to a true father figure that I had was my step-grandfather who passed when I was 7 in 2002. The boyfriend my mother had hadn't once cleaned a pair of shoes in his life beyond maybe wiping some dirt off, and I doubt even that. I legitimately don't know if we even owned an iron, and I had never owned a piece of woolen clothing until I was 18 and had already moved out. Afraid to say it but I ruined that sweater after not very long. The point in my mentioning these things is to illustrate that practically everything you've covered on this channel; what a goodyear welt is, how to take care of leather, why you should appreciate leather and its properties, the types of shoes there are, how to wear them, how to polish them, what types of garments are what, what a blazer is, why a man should own a navy blazer, how is a blazer worn, how is *anything* worn, even what fragrances are and how to use them. At least 95% of all of it was information that I only ever learned because of you and your videos. Because of you I've gotten managed to find some incredible clothing at reasonable prices. Because of you I've stopped buying so much cheap junk that's frankly just a waste of my admittedly limited funds. Because of you I knew how to actually dress for the first funeral- of my mother's boyfriend no less- I'd attended in some nine years. Apologies for this running as long as it has, but again, thank you. I may come from a pretty poor background, and I may even be poor myself, but the things you've taught me, and what I've been able to do with that knowledge, make me feel like I'm worth a whole lot more than just some guy from a long line of poor Hillbillies.

I was utterly humbled by your lovely comments sir. I am delighted that my rather amateur observations on this channel (which many may consider somewhat eccentric) have been of some practical and spiritual value on your life journey. Remember, no life is without its challenges and it is the way that we deal with these life-obstacles that really determines if we will thrive, or fail on the path to Chap Nirvana. Like you, I am from humble and simple origins, but with time and interest in making myself into a better gentleman, I have made some progress, as I am sure you will too. Keep up the pace on that journey to Chap Nirvana - I trust that your paths may cross one day and we can talk about our own pilgrimages. Ash

Good morning Ash, Chaps No ironing cloth = Shiny trousers! Not a situation you want on dress trousers. It was though definitely de-rigueur for Lightweights back in the day, where shiny outside/ green inside was the aspiration. I concur on all points in the video. I have had to iron my own stuff for decades and, having taught my sons, I am now teaching my daughters how to iron. The hardest thing I have found to get right is jacket sleeve where it meets the front of the jacket at the armpit. Infotaining as always *Salutes

Excellent video, as always, Ash. Ironing dress trousers can be a challenge. To achieve the best possible (sharpest) crease, it helps to use a tailor's clapper. Flat, smooth, rounded wooden rectangles, these are pushed onto just-ironed surfaces. By rapidly cooling and compressing the fabric they can give you a razor-sharp crease just where you want it. Also handy, especially for those with pleats and other complex shapes, can be a tailor's ham and a sleeve board. All of these items can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Most likely online, unless you happen to live someplace with specialty shops. Personally I use a steam press for most of my trousers, reserving the iron for touch-ups and pleats. But using a steam press isn't for everyone, nor is it for every garment. (But, oh, it does a lovely job blocking sweaters and other knit garments.) Lastly: Keeping your dress trousers looking sharp is 90% in the way they are stored. Don't let them lie in a pile on the floor or in the closet. Wool trousers should be brushed before and after wearing. Make sure to completely empty pockets. Spot treat any minor stains, etc. And find hangers that work for you. Personally I don't like the springy clip type that grip the cuffs. My closets aren't set up for long garments. Instead, I've settled on specialty hangers with "under bars" that securely hold the trousers in place, with no risk of them slipping off as happens with ordinary hangers.

Excellent! I always struggle with trousers! Usually I wear flat fronted chinos for work, but on the odd occasion I need to iron trousers with front and rear creases I find it a bit of an ordeal! And pleated trousers…….much as I love them, I find them almost impossible to get even creases on!

When we go on holiday i always take a ironing sheet with me, as my wife crams everything into a suitcase I like to iron my shirts and possibly trousers. Warners locations supply irons and ironing boards in each room, handy.

I still do this…..and I also press my wife’s slacks she wears with her business attire. Makes all the difference in keeping the “hang” of the trousers from the waist. This turns out to be an often-overlooked detail of keeping ultra-light NZ wool suit trousers operating as an effective cooling layer in our 43C+ weather in Phoenix.

Hi Ash, I was wondering if you've had any experience with rejuvenating nubuck shoes. Mine tend to lose their colour in areas like the toe and heels, which prematurely ages them, yet they are generally in good condition and have plenty of wear left in them. Perhaps you have some ideas on how to keep them tidy and extend their lives. Cheers! Phil
@TheChapsGuide

I would look towards the various speciality products for nubuck made by brands like Saphir. They will undoubtedly offer the best options in the field. Unfortunately I have no personal experience of nubuck in this field.
