HOW TO: JOHN DEERE Starter Replacement for ZTrak Mower 

The starter motor (which you replaced) recharges the battery as the motor runs. The battery is dead from not being charged. I found this out when I replaced my battery, only to have it not crank after mowing my lawn twice. If you replace the battery, it runs, but then the battery loses charge, it’s the starter motor. I do not think a continuity test can be done to check the starter-maybe someone can comment. Since the starter is new, you should be able to now jump the battery, then you should be good to go.

You just saved me a big ol mess of an afternoon. I had this same issue yesterday afternoon. I assumed, like you that the starter was the issue. I’ve seen weak starter not spin fast enough to move the gear up to catch. Mine has right around 1300 hours and I’ve never had an issue with the battery. It sounds like there is enough juice but I guess not enough. So at least for now “Sweet Pea” lives to mow another day. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks for the video. This turned out to be just what I need. I just replaced the engine on an older Z960 and could not remember where to tie in the battery cables at the solenoid. Your video was clear and informative. I see where the POS and NEG cables tie in. I searched the internet for an image but this is just what I need. Thanks Josh!

Mine is doing the same now, except it was not starting occasionally, and after a couple of turns of the key it would until this weekend. Just got the new starter, about to put it on.

We are now having to change out our starter due to the clicking sound. When the key is turned on it just gave a click then nothing turned it off waiting for the part to come in. Ours is a z320m

I can't even see the starter or the solenoid on mine without taking off a bunch of crap. It's a neighbor's lawn mower actually. I'm never buying a John Deere zero-turn.

I just bought a used zero turn from a auction and it was working great until today it wouldn’t turn over or nothing until I tried to turn the key again and it wanted to turn over and it made that exact same sound so I’m really really hoping the starter is bad.

I dont want to be a cheap guy but are any of the starters from China worth it?
