To join two sections of line, we often use the Double Surgeon's knot. The big advantage of this knot is that as well as making a solid join, if you leave one of the tags of the knot long, it can serve as a dropper.
That's why the Double Surgeon's Knot is a popular choice for joining tippet to leader for fly fishing, particularly when nymphing. You can use the dropper to attach a dry fly to serve as an indicator and tie the nymph on the main section of tippet.
