It's worth noting that you really want to be properly strapped in to a good racing seat if you are going to be jumping. Regular seat belts will let you float a little bit which means you are coming down hard when it lands.

The fall I think saved me bc hitting the ground slowed me down instead of slamming into trees. Needless to say the lapbelt didn't do shit to keep me from flying up into the ceiling. TLDR - funny thing was I landed on the other road, I didn't know was there, and was able to drive it straight home without a tow! Had a big ass chunk of grass flowing from my hood, with a bent frame, and that Toyota ran for another 2-3 months before finally the engine and transmission burst at the motor mounts.

Having jumped the 100 Acre Wood cattle guard three times now, I think the one thing I wish I would have known was that, as a novice with a novice caliber car, we're not going fast enough to worry about launching so hard we're gonna destroy our shocks. We've caught air every single time, sure, but the KYB AGX shocks we use have more than enough dampening to handle that load. Now, as we start going faster and faster and start sending it like the faster guys do, its something to consider, but suspension, handling, and braking upgrades should always come before go-fast bits

Good advices. Also, in a street car, if you find yourself airborne, you probably don't want to be and something's gone wrong. You're likely to notice this *when* your engine revs hard. Reflexes from boating serve well here, though, once you realize you're revving like that, you lift, try and orient, then get back on the throttle for landing, try and get your wheel speed in the neighborhood of where the ground is. This'll often mean a downshift and climbing revs, but it's gonna be instinct. :) (You want all the vehicle control options once you have them, in this circumstance. It's saved my car in the past, even if it's like, 'Yeah, now I'm the girl with the bent tie rod. It's not my fault!" :)

Super grateful for this video. Would you be able to get into some more specifics? Would you be able to do a suspension setup video for jumps? Or is that to dependent on application and preference?
@Teamoneilrally
@Teamoneilrally 5 лет назад
You're right, it is completely dependent on application and preference BUT the very general outline would be: If you're set in a good "normal" place, think about going up a little with the ride height, then also up a little with both compression and rebound settings. If your compression is too loose, it'll crash down and bottom out on the landing; if your rebound is too loose, it'll bounce like a pogo stick. It's all about trying to make it land smoothly and under control, front and rear, that'll take some testing and tweaking but the payoff is being able to stay flat over the crests and jumps without bouncing all over the road. Keep an eye on temperatures too, shocks will behave very differently when they're cold in the winter or hot in the summer.

If you want to go racing now, we usually recommend buying your first car used, finishing a few rallies, and if you take decent care of it you can usually re-sell it for whatever you paid for it. Buying used is also about 50% of what you'd pay to build new. Like this RS, you could buy this for $10k and be racing this summer, do a few rallies, then re-sell it for $10k and build your turbo car. www.specialstage.com/forums/showthread.php?86384-2001-2-5RS-LOG-BOOKED-RALLY-CAR-OPEN-LIGHT-NA4WD-11k-OBO&s=d1ad2ee181c8e07e87e3333b23585ecc

Wheelspeed will shoot up and the traction control will instantly start to brake those drive wheels while the car is still in the air. The car will land with the brakes applied to those driven wheels... Conclusion: if you ever expect doing shenanigans like jumping your streetcar you better switch the traction control OFF.

Drivers who lift mid air . tends to get to end of rally more often than those who floor it all the time… its an huge shock for lower ball joints if any angle on steering, axles , shafts, clutch all take huge beating if you floor it on jumps.. Safest way is to lift 30m before jump, floor it instantly to get weight transfer on back of vehicle more than just driving full throttle , lift mid air till you are about to land, but floor it before the tires hit the ground or are just starting to touch, but before they grip… older cars with not so great antilag that will help allso with power out of the landing.

In Dirt Rally you might fly a lot farther than you want to. Depending on the shape of the hill and your speed, you can *tap* the brakes right before the crest and basically glue yourself to the road. Helpful if you just never land the big one.

Well one of the reasons they're at the rev limiter in the big leagues is that it keeps the nose up as much as possible. Hit the brakes up in the air and you're nose diving quite a lot.

Don't you guys have an E46? What do you run for tires on it? If you downgraded the brakes to fit 15"s, what did you have to do?

We do have a handful of E46s, running e36 brakes to fit 15" wheels and winter tires.

I have wondered how accelerating or braking really changes the pitch of a car in the air. I mean, I'm not doubting it, if it does work that's really cool, I just wonder how it works, because it seems like it shouldn't.
@sanderaits
@sanderaits 5 лет назад
It works basically on Newton's 3rd Law. If you spin your tires fast then the whole body would tilt in the opposite direction to the wheels. The same with braking but you are removing rotation from the wheel and that energy transfers to the body and react in the opposite direction again.
@LeCharles07
@LeCharles07 5 лет назад
While some effect comes from the wheels, most of it comes from the rotating mass of the crankshaft and flywheel and the torque vector is dependent on how the engine is mounted in the car. While changes in engine rpm do have some affect, it probably only really matters if your jumping incredibly long distances (like 270 feet or whatever). The same principle is used to control satellite orientation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_wheel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_moment_gyroscope ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-woCdjbsjbPg.html

If you’re going to jump your street car, treat it like a trophy truck and press that clutch pedal in so you essentially land in Neutral to avoid detonating your driveline and once you’ve landed and regained control pop the clutch and get back into it. 🤙 rslly safe everyone

3:20 Having the weight of the car in the front is no explanation for a nose dive after you lifted off. According to our physics theory all objects, regardless of the weight are accelerated at the same rate. BUT as you go up the hill, just before you lift off, your heavy engine is going to force your nose of the car closer to the ground than the rear and I think this is where it gets its initial rotation that will end in a nose dive.
@Teamoneilrally
@Teamoneilrally 5 лет назад
Holy smokes, you're right! It probably also has to do with front wheel drive cars in particular not being able to "drive off" the jump because no power is going to the rear wheels... As soon as the front tires are in the air, the nose starts to drop where an AWD or RWD car is still under acceleration. Thanks for the comment, this is why we love RU-vid!

Pastrana rocks :D so it must be RWD accelerating in the air to lift the nose... or FWD in reverse... and when accelerating even harder, the car will also roll in opposite direction to driveshaft rotation :D
@rex_s80
@rex_s80 5 лет назад
MaxTryk this works with awd as well. With RC cars (the fast hobby grade ones) it will do full flips if you floors it in the air on some cars with the fixed awd 50/50 split. My rwd RC car (that goes 50mph and is for jumping and off-road) doesn’t rotate as much as the awd ones I’ve seen. But there are many factors that go into it. But I assume physics are the same but on a small scale here
@trykozmaksym

@@rex_s80 this is fun! You are right - my first thought was that front and rear would compensate each other.

MaxTryk on the RC cars, it’s dives like crazy. I did it once and hit the ground so hard on the top of my tail end as it was completely flipping over and it broke the tail end of my body off. Let’s just say I was very noice when I first started to jump these cars lol 😂
