What are your thoughts on the “Jump Cut” and will you use this advanced jump cut technique?
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 лет назад
I don't mind them...once and awhile. I still try to NOT have them because traditional editor here and I've been trained to NOT use them. I usually cover them or speak in full sentences...THAT said...I think they're okay and sometimes essential on this platform. It's just the amount of them can be distracting i they're used too often in succession.
@TheHungryGringo

I mean, why would you jump cut when you can just leave a bunch of unnecessary dead space in your videos?
@TheHungryGringo

In all seriousness though, this is a dope idea.

The Hungry Gringo Why would you need jump cuts when you rehearse your material so you can deliver it without much dead space?
@jason_v12345
@jason_v12345 5 лет назад
Speaking as just a viewer, I'm a fan of it. Memorizing limits the content volume. Impromptu speaking limits its quality. Teleprompters limit speaker engagement with the camera/viewer. As long as the jump cuts occur at the end of a unit of thought (i.e., a grammatical phrase), it's the superior choice.
@DuncanCustomAirbrush

Cutting out of the dead space and um's/and's is what keeps my video flowing exactly like you do - it makes a huge difference! But, it takes me FOREVER to edit, I wish there was an automatic tool to scan and cut all the dead air

Thanks for this guide to jump cuts. I did learn to split video at the exact ends of speaking sections, but I think there is something else to be done there between phrases. Cutting out dead space does not mean zero space. You have more spacing between your words when spoken as part of a single sentence than you do over jump cuts. So, after splitting the segments, do another set of cuts in the "dead space". For an example, say you've got three seconds between sections of speaking. Since I can naturally transition from one sentence to the next in about .75 seconds, I'd further split the "dead space" at .75 seconds in, and again .75 before ending. Then keep either one to get a non-wasteful, normal rhythm. And the reason for two cuts now comes into view: end segments with a good outtake (smiling, winking, still, etc.) and begin a good intake (continuous positioning, one inhalation, etc.) habitually. In post, you can choose either one to use -- and come up with new ideas for intakes and outtakes. Break cuts were bad in filmmaking because it exposed a lack of planning, but youtube videos, etc., are more casual . Because of this alone, jump cuts are more acceptable. Furthermore, since it is often a monologue delivered to a camera, you don't need dramatic, distracting transitions. Transitions are actually distracting. Mind you, I think it is still better to have fewer cuts. A perfect segment would be one continuous delivery, but it's not expected.
@Pengepugeren
@Pengepugeren 5 лет назад
Thanks for sharing. The L-cut is a great idea that I'll definitely be using going forward. A quick tip to make the process faster: You can click Shift + Ctrl + K instead of constantly having to click the blade tool with your mouse. Then you can use space bar and Shift + right arrow to move along the timeline quickly and efficiently without touching the mouse.
@itstheBMAC

Yup. I actually use a keyboard shortcut for tools as well, but since shortcuts are often very different based on configurations from person to person, I often don't mention keyboard shortcuts for tools. I hope that makes sense! Thanks for sharing yours!

One thing I learned the hard way when cutting a documentary. When using jumpcuts to get to highlights in something like a speech, if the camera guy moved the camera, make sure to try and line up the position of the person in frame. (Low opacity to compare shots helps) If the person moves too much, the cut sticks out like a sore thumb. Sounds obvious, but until now, I never noticed.

Good tips. I usually shoot a scene, watch the scene, and if it would need a lot of editing, I refilm that scene. I'll leave in a few umms, but I'll jump cut the most annoying umms and stuff if there are a number of them as long as I otherwise like how that scene went and don't want to reshoot it.

@Brian MacDuff thanks! I go to school for Media Arts Production and was taught a more 'cinematic' approach to editing (if you're going to cut use the 45° rule, etc), so getting my first chunk of footage that's already cut up based on file size was a bit daunting. Before watching, I just went from medium close up to close up and butt cut everything (that's the current unlisted video). Tomorrow, I am going to rewatch and employ these techniques to see what my partner's client likes best. My goal is to start doing talking head interviews for local businesses and move from 'iSoar Studios' to something more like 'ProFreak Productions' (where the weird turn pro). At least, that's the idea I have in my head. Thanks so much for the comment and content, and you've got +1 sub!

I have trouble deciding exactly where to make the slice. I usually go right up to the very frame the sound of the voice starts and back up 1-4 frames. I have tried cutting 1, 2, 3, and 4 frames before the sound. Is there a perfect place to make the cut every time? Like right on the exact frame the voice starts on or how many frames before. Same with making the cut after the voice. If you leave two frames before and two frames after, that is a 4 frame delay between the sound. but if you don't leave any space, then it may sound like one long sentence or even tighter between words. As you can tell, I'm confused, Please just tell me how many frames before the sound and after and I will do it that way every time from now on. lol Also, how do you decide when to use a J cut and when to use an L cut? Thanks for the awesome video!

Hey BMAC. I have asperger's, high functioning autism and I am making videos to help people who have this disability as well. I went from non verbal to speaking to people. BUT I have a phobia of talking on camera for long periods of time. So jump cuts will have me use a platform I otherwise could not use. Question though...is it possible to record a ton of clips, combine them, them make those jump cat transitions afterwards? That is how I would prefer to do it.
