If you're a beginner, jumping your bike might seem like an insurmountable feat. Have no fear, I'm here with the confidence booster you need to hit jumps like a pro...eventually.
Check out all the behind the scenes action on Instagram! I go deep with the Stories and provide even more insight on the daily!

Please consider supporting the Patreon platform. I REALLY dig making this content and the more support we can get, the more rad stuff we can do! Be sure to check out the "FULL SEND" level where you can submit a video for me to analyze and breakdown: / therichdrew
Don't forget to check out www.therideseriesmtb.com/ for the latest schedule of TRS Clinics.
Jumping is all about data and progression. Well, I guess there's a decent amount more than that but you need to start somewhere. My best advice is start at a spot that you are somewhat comfortable with and that is hopefully a tabletop or close to it. I'm also assuming you've watched the 7 Common Jumping Mistakes video already:
• 7 Common Jumping Mista...
Get the first few elements dialed and put yourself in a solid position to start working on the timing on the take off. Be patient and come in slowly to start. It's key to work up methodically with the speed you're traveling in space AND the speed with which you drop down and open up your body. Also remember that I feel you need to come in standing somewhat tall so you can drop down into that athletic position WITH YOUR HIPS and create that pre load.

@@choanlpoto I was thinking the same thing. As an "experienced" rider who never concerned himself with the How I was (or wasn't) doing things, I have watched these two creators and their videos quite a bit, and it's helped me so much to progress and develop as a competent rider. I'm slowly transforming into a competent rider, and not a courageous hucker, which is saving my body from the impact of what I call trail tutoring (crashing). The fact that Im an Ozarks local and now I have something nearby to ride (Bentonville) is really encouraging, which makes me look forward to my holidays all the more.

So well explained. I think everyone gets obsessed with pulling hard with the arms, and that always seems to end with guaranteed instability in the air because you never quite pull perfectly aligned. This is spot on.

What's wrong with her shorts and shirt? Don't baggy shorts catch on the saddle and risk accidents? I use shorts (along w/ my biking shorts) that are tight in the crotch area so they don't snag on the saddle. I have zero issues with them. Also, why a jersey? I use moisture wicking T-shirts. Although they dry quicker than cotton shirts they are still drenched in sweat when I'm done riding. Do jerseys keep from getting drenched with sweat? If so, i may buy one to try out.

Thanks for this amazing videos. Question: i really have bad time doing 6ft/8ft kicker jumps when the jump is after a downhill section or comming from a drop landing. It have to be flat a few meters for me before entering the jump to prepare my timing and make it work. Cant make my timing correct no matter i try if the surface is not flat as i mention. Its like my body can adjust the position if im comming from a landing and go up to another jump.
@TheButlerNZ
@TheButlerNZ 3 года назад
Heels down, load into the base not the face... but Trailbikes did teach me something... Your more likely to do damage jumping than most other tricks... I managed to stay out of hospital for my 1st 20 odd years of motorbikes (until a week before my 40th.. but that was high siding on a fairly flat paddock) but the next one was a double that I completed 95%... the last 5% was the top of the 2nd bump that kept the bike from completing the jump with me... I guess where I'm going with that is... Jumps are fun... Knowing how to jump and land... important... but don't forget... You don't NEED to do big jumps if your having issues. Find a nice small un complicated jump.. and jump the heck out of it until its so easy its boring... then move up a little. I actually did my 1st gap today.. but I still avoid them in the wild... because I can. Single to flat or tabletop, a lot easier... and a lot more forgiving if messed up.... I've got a lot more messing up before I'll ever be confidant on doubles... but hey I'm just out for fun.
@richdrewtherideseries

I agree completely!! This is a smart way to go about it. Keeping yourself in a position to keep building confidence is key. Keep it up Butler!

@@richdrewtherideseries and hey, they just graded my fav track in Wellington (NZ) Makara Peak 'Peak Flow'... Added a little double at the top (grrrr) but I did it (a 1st on MTB 4 me) and a lot of other rollable single (near mini table) jumps .. Lot of fun... I'll stick it in my vids in a few days but with a chest mount there's not much to see... (and it was set low.. sigh).. Heels down.... (oh and I'm thinking my Giant (medium) may be just a little short... shame I didn't get the bolt on longer droppers that came with the 2010 faith... Maybe I'll make some.)

Sounds like I might be pulling the bars sometimes still. 100% of my jump crashes have been dumping to the right, and most have been due to tilting to the right side and landing tilted, and I probably dead-sailored midair due to recognition that I was coming down tilted, and that probably didn't help

Rich. Whats up bro. Rich on the 12 minute You talk about not to pull with the arms and I learned the hard way in the past. Now, what have I never understood is when to use the bunny hop technique on jumps because even though I am not not pulling the bar the actual move of the bunny hop makes the bar comes to my waist. When I do the bunny hop on a flat ground It comes out perfect but If do It on jumps It seems that I am pulling the bar and I land awkward. So, Is it possible to put out a video putting together the jumping and bunny hop technique?

So, yes a few weeks ago Abbie(my 16 year old) and I were riding some of the jump lines at San Lee in NC. We both have had some progression with air from watching your videos. But we both said the same thing after a run with a dozen or so tables. We said we landed the transition on every other one and came up short on every other one. Looking at this I think we were both just trying to go to fast and were screwing up the timing. Each time we cased it slowed us down so we hit the next one good. Work in progress. Hopefully we see you on the trails in Bentonville in April.
