Ahh, the 7 most common jumping mistakes. Be honest with yourself, how many of these are you currently doing?? I see these regularly at every Ride Series MTB Skills Clinic we do and the first step in correcting them is admitting you're an offender. Be sure to hit like and drop a comment down below! Before anyone asks, this Specialized Stumpjumper is a full custom OZ Trails edition that isn't available to the public.
Please consider supporting the Patreon platform. I REALLY dig making this content and the more support we can get, the more rad stuff we can do! Be sure to check out the "FULL SEND" level where you can submit a video for me to analyze and breakdown: / therichdrew
I'd also love to have you follow along on my daily adventures on Instagram. Keep your eyes peeled for random tips. If this platform hits 10K, I'll do a daily tip! therichdrew...
Keep your eyes peeled for a Ride Series Clinic near you OR decide take a trip to Bentonville, Sedona, or Dallas to attend: www.therideseriesmtb.com/
Let's break it down! There are many common Jumping mistakes out there in the world and I've decided to focus on the following 7. But before we get into those, here are a few elements we need to get out of the way:
- Find the right spot! We're blessed to have an abundance of RAD areas to dial in our jump technique here in the ‪@OzTrailsNWA‬ . It's best to find a jump you're fairly comfortable with, set up the tripod, and film the action.
- If you don't have a dropper, GET ONE! If you do have one, GET IT DOWN!! Use that darn thing. Spend some time riding around in front of your house getting used to it.
Mistake 1: Pedalling too deeply into the takeoff. Get your speed early and stop pedalling as soon as you can so you can stabilize your mass. If you are on the downstroke as you come off the face, you risk pedal striking, or worse, loading up one side significantly more than the other.
Mistake 2: Not getting pedals level on the takeoff. You need a firm base to load into the takeoff, you can't do it unless your pedals are level.
Mistake 3: Hips too far back leading up to takeoff. KEEP YOUR HIPS OVER THE BOTTOM BRACKET or close to it at least. Having your weight behind you on the takeoff of a jump is a bad thing man!
Mistake 4: Lifting the bike on the takeoff. Use the takeoff for lift and influence it with how aggressively you load into the takeoff. Many people get into major issues here because they lift harder to one side and then go right into one of the other major issues... rigor mortis!
Mistake 5: Shooting the hips back after the takeoff. Find a popular jump and just sit there and watch, you'll see this happen many times. There's no need to do this, so don't do it. Keep the bike underneath you at all times if you can. If for some reason, you're coming up short, having your hips over the BB will allow you to shoot the bike in front of you if you are coming up short.
Mistake 6: Rigor Mortis. RELAX! Seriously, chill out. Find a smaller jump that you're comfortable on and really focus on staying as relaxed as possible. Think of it this way: You need to be able to use your arms and legs as suspension, you can't do that effectively if you're locked up like Fort Knox.
Mistake 7: Landing rear wheel first. This is certainly a personal preference, but I bring it back to dynamics: Landing front wheel first allows the front fork to start dissipating energy and allowing it to travel THROUGH the bike. Landing both wheels at the same time means you are maximizing the downward force. Landing rear wheel first means you are now INCREASING the velocity of the front wheel. Suspension forks aren't designed to work well in this scenario. How about this, try it and tell me what you think. NOW, the circumstances need to be right. Am I saying I ALWAYS land front wheel first? No, I'm not. However, it's my preference when possible.
There you have it, the 7 jumping mistakes I decided to focus on in this video. What does that mean? Well, it means there are quite a few more and we will tackle those in another video. For now, I really hope some of these ring true and this video helps you hone the technique a little better.
Peace out dumpers!

I was 72 when I first took up mtb and although could ride a bike that is all. Now 77, and over time have been gradual teaching myself jumping, 6 months ago I sent it on the biggest jump with the steepest ramp here and came to as they were loading me into the Ambulance ., survived ok and back riding in 2 weeks. The thing is I have dialed it back but one of the things that happens to me on a good jump is I start to float off my Pedals as if my body is jumping higher than my bike. The other thing is do you jump differently on a steep ramp jump compared to where its just a normal big track jump without the ramp, as this is what I've been doing. We don't have any kind of clinics here in Townsville Queensland, you just have to learn on your own. ps, I've had A Rocky Powerplay for over 2 years.

So if you now let go of the bike, then momentarily pose as superman pancake fashion whilst in the air and then grab the bike back and land perfectly you will have one of the best tricks down. If you don't get back on the bike however I fear the worst and that ambo won't be able to help. Boy and I thought I was too old getting back into mtbing at 53.

Visual learning is important to me so I can also see myself when I practice where to improve and how wrong am I in that step. I went off a jump at the end of last season and landed front wheel first and went over the handlebars. I have no idea why this happened. I also saw this happen with someone else when he was practising going off a drop. I couldn't help explain this either. He said it had something to do with his shocks. We both knew about the neutral hips/body position because we were taught this. It was my understanding that landing on both wheels is ideal. Please elaborate more on the front wheel first landing or create a video on how not to go over the handlebars on drops/jumps. Thanks!

@@richdrewtherideseries I live in Edinburgh so 30 mins from the Tweed Valley a real mecca for the mtb scene. It has trail centre's at Glentress and Innerleithen the later having uplift! It gem thou is the natural locally build train system it is just mint. We are quite rightly in ,lockdown so only localised XC type riding permitted which is fine. Keep the edits coming and I will be sure to watch. Just heading for a wee whisky the washing my bike. Stay safe 😎

If you rigor mortiz, you'll end up rigor mortiz😝. 9:38 should be the thumbnail of this video. That was a crazy stunt. Awesome video. To me, the most common mistake that I do in jumping is speed judgement. Most of the time I come in slow and end up casing jumps (ps. I am a beginner and I can only do small ones right now😝)
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад
Pinoy LowBudget Productions Haha, I agree! That would’ve been a cool thumbnail indeed. The speed is hard thing to judge and it can only come with time and repetitions. Keep at it 👊🏻

Rich... number 4 so funny. Did this for a loooong time... actually, Sometimes still do specially when I think i need to push up to clear the gap. It's kinda of a defense feeling which made me broke my colarbone.

This is really good, I agree with all of the points. The 'don't lift the bike' can be broken into two items imo; 1. Don't pull on the bars - this is what can cause the body to extend up and away from the bike, and contribute to hips moving back. 2. Don't bunnyhop - this takes away from the LOADING into the jump and so can lead to feet coming off pedals and the body extending away from the bike. (Easily noticeable if someone points their toes downwards in the air) The better you get, the more you can reintroduce the above techniques, but they should never be the primary method for jumping, they serve their own purposes, but will throw you off when done incorrectly and result in mistakes if used before you're ready.

Do you essentially pump it, ease off the bike (maintaining contact) and hang on to lift the bike and ready for landing? If that makes sense.

I tried my first jump today and the bike landed a little sideways and felt very unstable. Then I found the how to video on jumps and realized I was picking the bike up. I am definitely giving that another go again tomorrow.

@@richdrewtherideseries Well, I tried loading into the jump, and was more stable but I didn't catch any air, lol. I will keep trying but with more speed. I will practice some small bunny hops first.

Always love seeing the local trails in your videos! Too bad this session area is closed right now though. So I have the tendency to do #7 on lippy takeoffs, but I will most always gently ease the front end down instead of slamming it. Feels good to me and I have good control. But on the other end of the spectrum, when I try to land front wheel first, I almost always slam the back end of my bike down instead of gradually easing it down. Any tips on how I can improve?

Just watched this again after the video you made with Sarah and Brian (BKXC). My biggest mistake Drew is coming in as you describe loading the bike up on the face and then pushing the bars down as the front tire leaves the face and then soaking up the jump by bending my knees and crouching down towards the bike before the rear wheel is off the face of the jump. Serious OTB situation ensues.

7:50 it's so when we land are feet push into the peddles, and more stable when landing by having a lower mass. and when going down hills its natural to do this, so when seeing a landing my body leans back so i dont go flying over the bars. its not right but its why we do it.
